ATH Presents: Matt Kivel @ Community Garden (12.12)

We don’t always curate shows, but when we do, you know we love something wholly, like Matt Kivel. The artist, currently living in Austin, will release his new long-player, Escape from LA, on December 12th via Scissor Tail Records, so to throw our weight behind his work, we’re sponsoring his show over at Community Garden. You’ll find the record is mostly filled with really gentle ballads, the sort that seems perfectly fitting for a small space like Community Garden. He’ll be joined by several friends playing some short sets, like Alex Dupree, so be sure to come and hang out with us all. Things will kick off around 6:30, with copies of the LP available to buy!

Matt Kivel Shares Vampire Weekend

The entirety of Matt Kivel‘s new record is all about storytelling, detailing his life as a musician living in LA, and how he made it out alive! His latest single instantly hits at the struggle to make it out, musically from the city, with a nod to Vampire Weekend and their success during the 00s. Going through, I love the sincerity with simplistic charms like “my sad songs aren’t sad enough/my weary songs aren’t weary enough, reflective and yet openly self-deprecating. His guitar play in the middle of verses is pretty special too, displaying his craftsmanship, lovingly including a bit of gritty guitar riffs; plus a nice little Everly Brothers nod never hurt nobody! Escape from LA will be out via Scissor Tail Records, with a release show here in Austin on the 12th!

Matt Kivel Announces Escape from LA

While the writing process for Matt Kivel‘s latest album took about 7 years to bring the songs to the table, the record is a statement on 33 years living in LA (and how Matt got out!). Our first sample of what’s to come has this broad indie rock brush stroke, dipping a toe in the pools of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, whilst also sounding utterly unique. When listening, there’s this hint of fragility in Kivel’s voice, just faintly kind of quivering at the end of syllables, reminiscent of Voxtrot‘s Ramesh; it’s a pretty special feel, made deeply emotional when the depth of the arrangements in the track swell around your ear. We’re in for a fantastic voyage if this track is any indicator; Escape from LA is out on December 12th via Scissortail Records…with a brief tour the week before the release with Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
