Enjoy This Eskimeaux Track

eskimoWhen I pressed play on the brand new Eskimeaux track, I thought it was offering more of the same, but just before the 30 second mark (just!) things take an up-turn. Harmonies are joined by a male counterpart, pace is picked up and then you’re just falling in love all overthis song. It’s been released as a teaser to the new mini-album, Year of the Rabbit (so 2001 or 2023), and things sound like they’re going to be pretty special. If you haven’t been convinced by the band’s work yet, this looks like the time to get on board.

Show Pics: Elvis Depressedly @ The Mohawk (7/8)

Elvis DepressedlyCatching up on some pics I was gun shy to post given our instability last week (let me know if any of you see things loading weird or slowly).

Elvis Depressedly‘s solidly lo-fi delivery of well-crafted indie-pop songs charmed the ATH team. I missed them during SxSW, but The Mohawk and Transimssion remedied that for me with an indoor show. The show ended up selling out due to a highly popular double-headlining tour with Mitski and a great opener in Eskimeaux. I felt older than usual, lots of Xs on hands.

Read on for some pics and a few thoughts…

Show Preview: Elvis Depressedly + Mitski @ Mohawk (7.8)

Elvis DepressedlyThere’s a great deal of shows coming through town this week, and it just so happens that one of my favorite acts is on that list, Elvis Depressedly.  I first caught on to the act via my love of Coma Cinema, which is Mat Cothran’s solo project.  It’s all part of the lo-fi pop movement, though there are definitely some more abstract and strange movements going on within the project. They bring their new effort, New Alhambra, which has been well-received, especially by me!  They’ll be joining friends Mitski on stage, along with highly-touted newcomers, Eskimeaux. Doors will open for this gig at 8 PM, and you can grab $12 tickets HERE.

This Eskimeaux Tune is a Grower

ddwThe first few times I ran through this Eskimeaux track, I struggled a bit.  The opening to the tune is soft, almost too casual in its delivery.  Then I jumped forward, getting right to the rocking part of the track.  Sure, it’s not the most legit way to go about it, but it put the whole song in perspective, which eventually won me over.  You’ll especially want to wait until just after the 3 minute mark, where there’s a brief, yet explosive burst of musical joy.  This is just another sign of things looking up for the band as they prep the release of OK via Double Double Whammy on May 12th.
