Top 12 Albums of 2019…According to Marc from the Midgetmen

Austin punks the Midgetmen are an Austin staple, and have been for quite some time. Thus, we’ve befriended Marc through the years of seeing them at shows and all that. He’s joined up in in our efforts to get some insight into year end lists the nontraditional way. Here’s a few words from Marc. Also, and it should definitely be mentioned; he’s a huge TGI Fridays supporter; I once watched him down slider after slider topped off with potato skins at a SXSW party…sponsored by TGI Fridays.

Marc: As it turns out, I happen to like beverages that come in 12 packs… and I happened to have exactly 12 albums that stood out to me this year. I actually had a lot of trouble cutting the list down from 20 –> 10, which is how I wound up at 12.

These 12 will certainly be in permanent rotation whereas the remaining 8 I wasn’t quite as sure about. (Which is not to say that remaining 8 aren’t great. Neil Young was in that 8!)
Thanks again for letting me give you a list of things that most people will ignore!

Ezra Furman Announces Twelve Nudes

There are two things working in favor for Ezra Furman; he’s constantly shape-shifting his sound and he’s mentioned Jay Reatard as one of the artists he looked to in the recording of his new album Twelve Nudes. This new single definitely has things high upon the energy front, a la Jay, blasting forth with furious pace from the very get-go. He even seems to have adopted his own frantic stylings for the vocals, forcing the lyrics to bounce out in even step with the pace of the track; the lyrical content is a straight shot towards how many folks feel in today’s world where none of seem to be ok. Twelve Nudes will be out on Bella Union on August 30th.

Brand New Track from Ezra Furman

It’s a good thing we have this Ezra Furman to start off our day, as he’s one of my favorite curator’s of pop rock. His tunes are rooted in the tradition of garage rock, and on this album, he’s filled the record with lyrical content put forward as a collection of stories. You’ll hear the hooks in this song, with some Springsteen-esque delivery, rocking its way to the sweet chorus. His new album Transangelic Exodus will be released by Bella Union on February 9th. .

Brand New Ezra Furman

I cannot wait for the release of the new Ezra Furman album, especially now that I’ve listened to the record’s first single. There’s this almost Springsteen like vocal delivery, spoken with a purpose, as opposed to sung. But, for me, it’s the backing production work that really elevates Furman’s work. From the little strings to the backing vocal bursts, you can tell just how much Ezra cares about what he’s creating. Don’t skip out on the euphoric ending that awaits! Look for Transangelic Exodus to drop via Bella Union on February 9th of next year.

Ezra Furman is Back with New EP

ezraIt took catching a live set from Ezra Furman for me to entirely buy into the hype surrounding his music…but now that he’s announced a new EP I’m salivating at the thought of new tunes. It’s got six new songs, one which is streaming below. I love the production work on this number, with his voice really taking control of the listener from the get-go. There’s some range from Furman, but when the accompaniment takes off, including a saxophone, the song really excels, leaving with you this infectious piece of pop music that you’re unlikely to ignore. Look for the new Big Fugitive Life EP coming in August from Bella Union.

Ezra Furman Covers The Replacements

ezraI’m not sure exactly where I sit on the Ezra Furman fence; I think I’m straddling as we speak. That might change now that he’s chosen to cover a Replacements song, and not just any song, but perhaps my favorite track from the band, period: “Androgynous.” It’s a pretty decent job too, thus why I figured I would be okay with sharing it with you (as if there were any rules). You’ll be able to find this version on the deluxe release of his latest album, Perpetual Motion People; I’m thinking this tune might just convince you to pick it up yourself.
