Fantastic Purple Spots Announce Vibrations Now EP

Due to unforeseen circumstances, namely having another kid and moving homes, I kind of pulled back on the ATH Records label after the Love Burns cassette. But, new year, and I’ve got things running again, today announcing a new digital EP from Fantastic Purple Spots. The Austin act has been on my mind for a bit, having discovered them after their eponymous LP from the Winter of 2022. We’ve been in touch since those early days, and the band are allowing me to work with them on their excellent new Vibrations Now EP. Their sound is somewhere between pastoral pop and psychedelia, allowing you to let your mind swirl with the mixture of sounds you’ll hear in each track. Their Vibrations Now EP will be officially out on January 26th, but you can stream the title track below!

Last Week’s Jams (12.11 – 12.15)

Unfortunately, this is probably the last of Last Week’s Jams for 2023. Not because I don’t want to write about new tunes, but because, for some reason, folks just stop putting out music and let the world dwindle to a compilation of year-end lists. But, last week we still had tons of tunes to cover, with a whole lot of Austin represented. We revisited Fantastic Purple Spots, plus had brand new stuff from Big Bill, the Infinites and Fading Yellow. Got a bonus with one more Maureens track, which might be my favorite on their latest LP, and a fresh Club 8 hit that came out of nowhere. If you’re just looking for a playlist of new music, why not start here.

Fantastic Purple Spots Call the Christmas Ambulance

As the year begins to slowly wind down, there’s still some holiday cheer left in the world, or so I hope Today, we wanted to share with you a tune from Fantastic Purple Spots, who we may be working with in the New Year. This is their tune “Christmas Ambulance,” a meandering bit of psychedelic-tinged pop vibes; it manages to channel the band’s indie roots whilst still holding on to a faint hint of holiday spice. Personally, I love the way that the track builds this heavy fuzz that runs through the verses, building like you’d expect from someone working in Elephant 6 circles. Get your holiday cheer below! And keep your eyes peeled for news about a new EP in 2024!

Last Week’s Jams (1.17 – 1.20)

You’d think in a short coverage week, we’d have few tunes, but there was so much great stuff last week, that we couldn’t help but to try and cover as much as we loved. Personally, I fawned over new Lachlan Denton, Cor de Luxand Tiny Ruins, plus continued my support for Spice World as Album of the Year. I also hit up the Austin scene with new stuff from Bayonne, Dorio, Fantastic Purple Spotsand Rad Gnar. RayRay loved that new Pile tune to death and premiered a new Strawberry Fuzz jam you can find lurking in here too. If we missed something super cool, let us know, otherwise, here’s a way to pass an hour of your day, happily.

Get Into Fantastic Purple Spots

The last year or so I have scaled back my 4 times a week ventures to Austin’s clubs, so much so that I’ve missed out on some really great tunes that I would likely adore, such as Fantastic Purple Spots. They dropped their self-titled LP last year, but I’m just digging into it now. I wanted to give you one of the singles from the record, which seems to exemplify why I’m stoked on the group’s sound. This track’s full of melody, be it the musical notes or the backing vocals. But, at the same time, it has that sort of DIY ethos, just operating with enough fuzz underneath to make it seem imperfect (in the best sense!). Honestly, the whole LP reminds me of Austin’s take on Halo Benders, so if that’s your bag, dive into this treat!
