The Leaf Library Announce After the Rain, Strange Seeds

In about 37 seconds (not 6-7 you knobs) the Leaf Library managed to completely captivate me, without even so much as a whisper; it’s just driving rhythm movements and a guitar circling overhead, and I was head-over-heels. Then Kate Gibson enters the picture and the vibrance of the song is cemented within my mind. As they progress, the quartet is patient, careful not to lay all their cards on the table; you get a plot twist around 1:40, with additional textures thickening the pop swell. They lock in, coming in and out, flickering as a candle in a gentle pop wind, like “golden moth outside my window” that’s continuously repped in the tune. Really striking way to open up this morning; they release After the Rain, Strange Seeds via Fika Recordings on March 20th.

The Just Joans Share Limpet Single

A few weeks back, The Just Joans returned with one of my favorite tunes of the year, and yes, I say that with all seriousness and hyperbolic intent. Their new single doesn’t miss either, bringing in that orchestral brand of chamber pop that made us all fawn over the early Belle and Sebastian records. First, you’ll fall in love with the vocal approach, using the male role as the lighter foil in the distance. Second, the stomp and spin of the piano is perfectly situated to give you a bit of a spiritual bump. And lastly, you’ll walk away adoring the final verse or lyrical delivery, as that closing 45 seconds just grew a smile on my grumpy old face. I had no idea that I was to expect a new Just Joans record in the New Year, let alone that they’d deliver one of the week’s most delicious singles to make the announcement. Once the opening segue passes, you’re introduced to this rolling joyousness, kicking off with an infectious rhythmic bounce that sets you up for one of my favorite choruses this year. Sure, it’s the classic simplicity of monosyllabic notes, but dammit if the execution doesn’t make you want to jump from your chair and just let all the demons escape through your fingers as you reach for the skies. We’re surely in store for a great collection of hits when Romantic Visions of Scotland drops on January 23 courtesy of Fika Recordings.

Adults Share Flag Single

Through the first two singles from their forthcoming album, Adults have been delivering energetic pop-punk with a nod to their fellow UK friends. This new single, however, works with the vocal interplay and a bit more of a slow-burning stomp. At times, it seems like the vocals are working against each other, such is the nature of the tones; they collide eventually, providing a nice little melodic hook that reminds us of the joys of listening to their craft. Be sure to take a breath, as the band does just beyond the 2 minute mark, and wait for them to sail back in with big hooks! The Seeds We Sow Are Growing Buds Nonetheless drops on October 31st via Fika Recordings.

If you’re in need from some good old fashioned pop punk from the UK, might we suggest you dive into this new single from Adults. After hitting us hard with “Patterns,” the group are offering a more subtle blast of rock n’ roll this time, choosing to use the power of dual vocals. Those vocals overlap, building a hook that encourages pop fans to swoon; they mix it up, working against one another as the track progresses, keeping up just enough differentiation to keep it interesting. Behind it all is this shooting distorted guitar, providing the proper edge that makes you feel alive. The Seeds We Sow Are Sprouting Buds Nonetheless is out on October 31st via Fika Recordings.

Brutalligators Announce Still Here

I get a lot of tunes across my desk every day, and some are easy to turn off. But, I couldn’t turn off this Brutalligators single, and in fact, kept coming back to it more than I’d like to admit. Of the handful of singles they’ve made available from their new LP, this one’s perhaps the one that seems most likely to catch the indie and the punk kids all at once. There’s something in the verses that feels both British and not too far off from what the Weakerthans brought to the table on their first LP; it’s all about the set up for the exuberance that smashes through in the chorus, instantly hooking you as it balances out the pop with a slight bit of a growl. Still Here already sounds super rad, and it drops via Fika recordings on November 21st.

Pleased to Meet You: Pelts

The good people at Fika Recordings have been turning me onto great pop music for the last however many years, and they’re not stopping by introducing us to Danish outfit Pelts. This bass line has an immediacy you won’t be able to turn away from, swinging in to dance in lock-step with the stabbing guitar line; it’s all a set out as the tune wiggles into its main foray once the vocals calmly join. Those matter of fact lines for the track to kind of move in and out between the constantly moving lines of both guitars; you can almost sense the internal movement pushing along as the track cranks out these wonderful hooky guitar licks. Really excited to hear their new Swimming EP!

Admittedly, the title of the album might be a touch long-winded, but that doesn’t detract from the excitement bubbling inside my brain as there’s news of a fresh Adults record. The group have consistently set out to craft a joyous brand of indie rock akin to Martha, and this go round, they feel like they’re swimming riot there with their peers. The layered way the vocals work in this tune seems to create this natural brand new melody, so you’ve got the traditional one being supplanted by a layered melody, all of it swirling around these lightly growling guitar lines that will make all the indie kids jealous. Crank it up and look for The Seeds We Sow Are Sprouting Buds Nonetheless to rise to the top when Fika Recordings drop it on October 31st.

Friday Album Streams: Allo Darlin, Karl Frog, The Wind-Ups and More

A lot of really great music dropped today, and, well, we’d be poor stewards of the underground if we didn’t point you in the right direction for some of these new releases. You get indiepop legends returning after a lengthy absence; you get a bit of a modern take on the Pastels; try on an eccentric crooner; and end up with a little noise pop. You can’t go wrong with any of these releases, but as always be sure to support the artists and labels!

Sekunderna Announce Hits for Fika Recordings

Looks like we’re going to get filled with rambunctious energy, especially if you choose to crank up this new track from Sweden’s Sekunderna, who’ve just announced a brand new LP. While the lyrical work might get lost in translation, the speed and power of this tune is right up my alley; it honestly reminds me of a Swedish answer to Martha. The riffs run fast and sharp, offering the perfect bit of catchy distortion to encourage the drumming to run right alongside. While I may not completely understand the lyrical content, the track itself is brimming with hooks that give you all the feels, courtesy of the vocals. Their new LP Hits will be out on August 22nd via Fika Recordings.
