Fun Pop from Pony in the Pancake

So maybe Pony in the Pancake are playing a little into the season here, but their new track “Summer Has a Way” is a pretty infectious little ditty. The tune’s got this little bit of surfy jangle to the guitar work, along with some steady bounce that really helps lift the song’s energy. Plus, the way the vocals are delivered in this casually emphatic fashion makes them perfect for those late night parties with all your friends as you sing along to the chorus. The band will have a new record out on September 20th via Five Kill Records, and I expect it to keep up with the vibe as it’s titled Summer Sun.

The Parlor Share Dream

I’m really captivated by the Parlor, especially having spent some time listening through to their latest single. Upon first listen, it felt delicate, but also teasingly simple. I knew, knowing a little bit about the band, that there had to be more to things, so I pressed repeat and sat in with an attentive ear. In doing so, the beats became the central heartbeat of the song; the guitar work began to emerge like little electric pulses in the brain, shooting off this way and that, all the while building this careful backdrop for Eric and Jen’s vocal performances. This track appears on a two-track single from Five Kill Records, but the duo have a lot going on behind the scenes; I suggest also revisiting 2018’s Kiku.

Digging on Bruiser and Bicycle

Sometimes I find myself stuck in listening rotations…a little iniepop here, touch of punk there, and maybe an acoustic ditty of some sort. But, Bruiser and Bicycle, they’re getting me out of my comfort zone with their musical stylings; they’re building songs by adding layer after layer to flesh out the sound. You’ve got two battling guitar lines, one a folkier strum, with the other slightly more menacing. The rest of the track works around the vocal craftsmanship, swelling harmonies atop the natural melody…at times the duo almost seem like they’re merely yelping through your speakers. On February 22nd, they’ll be dropping Woods Come Find Me via Five Kill Records.
