Last Week’s Jams (5.27 – 5.31)

A strange week we had last week; I blame the Memorial Day holiday for that, as it started us all off a bit slow. For whatever reason, we didn’t get a lot of fresh tunes, so I, of course, was out there digging deep to unearth some stuff you’re probably not going to find in a ton of other spots, like the new T.G. Shand or Holding Hour singles. It was good to get another single from the next the Martial Arts LP, plus our old friend Stephen popped up with his new project Shortcuts. And, as I’ve been trying to do more, there were some great records like the new Neutrals and Oh Boland LPs I wanted to nod towards too. It’s all in the playlist below.

Gabriel Birnbaum Shares A Feeling Unbroken

We’ve had our eye on Gabriel Birnbaum for some time, whether that be his solo work, like the forthcoming Patron Saint of Tireless Losers, or his work with Wilder Maker. Today, we get this lonesome ballad from the solo side of things, drawing upon Birnbaum’s excellent voice to really sell the track itself. Musically, it’s pretty stark, with light hums from the gentle strum reverberating, kind of giving this almost percussive nature to the picked notes. By building in that depth of sound, it really allows Gabriel’s vocals to completely charm; there are moments when the melody is so sweet that you almost feel like its a chorale group serenading you. Patron Saint of Tireless Losers is out June 28th via Western Vinyl.

Last Week’s Jams (4.1 – 4.5)

New music comes hard and heavy during the Spring months, as its the perfect time to set up summer releases and tours. We tried to get to as much as we could, and grabbed 24 new songs for you to settle into on this Monday. New stuff from Austin’s Variety assures the band is still on the rise in my eyes. I’ve been really into the tunes from Bibi Club‘s new LP, and they throw a plot twist with some English sparkle on it; it matches up well with the dark wave from Houses of Heaven. Friends of the site like Gabriel Birnbaum, Kaspar and Snowy Band all had new work to share with the masses., plus be sure you taste the new Babehoven tune hanging out for you at the end. Press play for joy!

Gabriel Birnbaum Announces Patron Saint of Tireless Losers

Good things come to those who wait, or at least that’s the camp I’m in when it comes to news of Gabriel Birnbaum‘s new LP, five years after releasing the excellent Not Alone. I first came to appreciate Birnbaum as a songwriter with Wilder Maker, and he’s only grown in his approach. When recording the new album, he kept the demos to himself, bringing them to the musicians he was recording with so as to flesh the song’s out together. That sort of organic nature is definitely apparent on the single, with a liveliness bleeding through the recording when it comes to the arrangements; it feels almost as if you’re right there as they’re jamming out. His new album has found a home on Western Vinyl, who release Patron Saint of Tireless Losers on June 28th.

New Music from Gabriel Birnbaum

I’m probably most familiar with Gabriel Birnbaum due to his work in Wilder Maker, who I’ve written about quite a bit. Now, Gabriel is doing a little solo work, and he’s just released a track off his forthcoming LP. Going through this track repeated times, I’m drawn by the contrasting guitars, fighting with one another throughout. One guitar has this almost feathery strum, giving off a light-hearted vibe; the other guitar takes on a more forlorn tone, bending around Birnbaum’s voice at every turn. No word just yet on when the album will be finished, but what a wonderful first entry we have here.
