Last Week’s Jams (6.30 – 7.4)

It was a shortened work, so we crammed in a good 20 tracks to get you covered in the newest and coolest from “the underground.” Really loved some of the stuff coming out of the West Coast, like new Galore and The Wind-Ups; Texas had some decent representation too, with new Teethe, The Stayres, Alien Eyelid and Nuclear Daisies tunes making their way onto the playlist. Old favorites Quality Used Cars and the Radio Field made solid returns, and I found myself super stoked to have stumbled upon Madrone (whom you should all check out immediately). Dig in and see if there’s something rad you love…and if so let us know!

Galore Share Bastard Video

There is something so powerful about the jangling of a guitar that just makes the world open and say awesome, like on this new Galore track. You can’t deny that the minute they started chugging away at those jagged riffs that your spirit instantly picked up, much like the joy the band takes in smashing things throughout the accompanying video. The vocals do a lot to carry the song as well, switching back and forth between the wistful dreaminess of indiepop and an emphatic punch up when the whole gang joins in on the fun. Everything about this track just feels like this is the world we should be living for, so grab Dirt from Speakeasy Studios SF on July 25th.

The end is near my friends, at least for 2022. We’ll likely be popping in and out over the holidays, but songs (and motivation) will be minimal, so don’t expect too much from us on our end. That said, we do have one last Last Week’s Jams to run for you, with a solid amount of hits. I left out all the Best Of lists…but do check out RayRay’s Best Songs and my Top 50 Albums, if you’re so inclined. I made sure to cover the new Galore EP and Fine. Stream Galore’s Blush EP

There’s only one thing wrong with the new Blush EP from Galore; it’s only five songs! We ran “New Living” last week, and honestly, if I had held up our sites Top Tracks, this song would definitely have made it in there; it’s got just right jangle. Running through the rest of the EP, you’ll find the quartet playing with a little more space, letting the song’s have a bit of room to breath, like in “Ladders.” That track has a crisp guitar line, and the vocals seem to completely shine on the listener like rays of sunlight breaking through the San Fran fog. Honestly, this is a great way to just spend your morning on repeat. Blush EP is available now through Paisley Shirt/Safe Suburban Home.

If your one of the seven people that hit up our site regularly (thanks mom!), then you might notice a title change. Nothing big, but just dropped a word because I was tired of pretending to be too clever. I’m not. Alas, we are still out here covering as much music as we have time for, and still trying to figure out how to incorporate the TMZ style drama that makes the cool sites so popular. So, for me, last week had some highlights I was pretty stoked upon; I got to hear solid returns from Lust for Youth and Jackie Mendoza, not to mention another brilliant electropop goodie from Das Kope. We got the announcement of new Julian Never, Galore and Blue Lawyer LPs, which should make everyone in the Bay Area proud. Plus there’s a great show preview/review from J.Wags on Golden Dawn Arkestra, so be sure to check out his work!

Galore Share Video for New Living + Announce Blush EP

Generally speaking, Friday’s always seem to carry with them a bit of yearning, and perhaps you’ve found the soundtrack to your yearning below by way of this fresh new single from San Francisco’s Galore. They’ve just announced their Blush EP, with this striking single, with the promise that the five new songs come across with a bit more “arthouse, droney sound” being employed. You can hear that here, as there’s a crisp jangle, albeit one that seems a touch decaffeinated at first. Still, the quartet finds a way to punctuate their sound, punching up the volume a bit at the 1:22 to mark, allowing overlapping vocals and a heavier texture to sort of raise the bar on vibe. Even with that kick, the band still manage to take another twist, keeping that textured feel, but bringing back a sense of longing, only coming from the vocals in the song’s latter half. All of this is set to a wonderful camping adventure shot at Point Reyes National Seashore by the band’s own Ava Rosen. Galore Drop Cucaracha Video

As a kid, I remember being in love with the sound of punk and grunge upon my introduction to it all; it felt like something I could do, something that was attainable (the sound/not stardom). Somewhere, sitting in their bedroom right now is a similar kid, waiting for that same door to open, that same sound; please play them this song from Galore. The band’s guitar sound has this sharp angular stabs and guitar riffs, which can come across as frantic at times, matching up with the vocal howls. When the whole group joins in on the vocals, this is what rock n’ roll should feel like, to me anyways; it has this rapturous joy, even when the tone seems harsh. Everything about this song, from the music itself to the video makes you want to be part of the fun; makes you want to start a band, makes you want to be part of something bigger than yourself…that’s what rock n’ roll should be. If you dig it, look for their self titled album on June 1st via Rocks in Your Head Records.

The Hussy Changing Things Up

hussyAfter adding in some layers of synthesizer to their last effort, Pagan Hiss, the Hussy have stripped it all down, just focusing on guitar work with varying percussive and string elements added for texture. The group’s first single from Galore has that psych bounce that’s been popularized by group’s like Thee Oh Sees; they do seem to play these songs with a heavier hand than most, which gives them that dosage of differentiation. They’ve got a huge tour lined up for the early summer months, including Austin dates at Cheer Ups and the Yellowjacket.  Look for the release on Southpaw Records on June 30th.
