It was a hectic week on my end, and RayRay up and left town (to travel to Detroit!), so I snuck in a bunch of gems I think you’ll really enjoy, all of them presented in a little playlist for your pleasure. I was stoked to see our friends in Pop Filter back with a new album and single, so be sure to listen to “Dirt Road Anthem.” Also in the unexpected great news realm, Tony Molina has a new LP on the way, and well, we’ve opted to include all 3 of the singles he released, as there’s never a bad time for Tony! We got UK stuff too, with new Pynch, Adults and Teenage Tom Petties, so that’s at least three continents represented in this 20 track collection for you all!

Houstonian outfit Ghost Party have something afoot, with this being their second song in as many months. I love the Texas swagger in the song, as it’s a definite reminder of the balladry that many of us grew up enjoying with our parents. The drum work plays really lightly throughout, brushed across the gentle strum of the acoustic guitar as pianos build in a powerful texture. Softened backing vocals further the texturizing of the tune, giving an accompanying melody that lifts the tune’s spirits as the bass walks us through until the end. Looking forward to hearing if there’s a new EP or LP on the way, so we’ll keep you posted there!

Trying to keep pace with ourselves, we covered a ton of ground last week on the site. We got to premiere a psychedelic campfire jam from Mountain Movers, and we might be one of the few US-based sites covering Dr. Sure’s Unusual Practice…which steps in line with that Cola track we also ran. There’s a bit Austin contingent too this week, as Variety, Blushing, Strand of Oaks and Good Looks all honored us with fresh music from their forthcoming releases. We also flirted with a bit of electronic arts too, with new stuff from Martha Rose and Maria Chiara Argiro…just so you don’t think we’re all rock n’ roll over here. You can’t listen to the tones of the guitar strum on this new Ghost Party track without feeling the emotion; there’s this natural sense of longing that pulls you right into the core of the song. Vocals are presented in such a fashion that they feel more like a whispered conversation between two lovers, which loosely ties the voice to the sentiment in the lyrical work. All of this gets tied in a nice little bow by tinkering keys and sliding guitar, letting you drive that car off towards the horizon without ever looking in the rearview mirror. Stick till the end for a sweetened dose of sugar!

We covered tons of territory last week, particularly as we ran tons of little interviews in our Meet the SXSW Band features; it’s also the Spring season, so that means there are tons of announcements about new records and such. I was stoked to hear new stuff from Constant Follower and Mary Onettes, plus we premiered new tune from The National Honor Society and Hot Coppers. And, seeing as its SXSW, we got interviews back from Daiistar, Taleen Kali, Hamish Hawk and a ton more, all with little introductions plus their music. Ghost Party is a new outfit on the Texas scene, though admittedly, they’ve got a familiar vibe going on here. Their first single brings back a smoky psychedelia, laying really low like a bit of rustling leaves in your yard. They build in a nice little plot twist when they hit the chorus, letting the melody evolve into more of a playful boogie or stomp, something that gives off a bit more groove to the genre. As the song circles back through another cycle, it eventually fades out with this bit of ambient space, leaving you with your own ability to take in a deep breath.

Felt like we should hit up Thursday by starting off with some catchy hooks and blasting riffs! Good thing we’ve got this tune from Athens’ (Georgia) Monsoon. This song works back and forth between a sedate ballad and a hook laden pop rock tune, adding in these great little details that give the tune a bit of flare. Plus, just as you’re hooked on the style, there’s this closing change in direction, hinting at some of the artistry that’s lurking in their forthcoming Ghost Party LP. The album will be out next year, so for now, you can sit back and enjoy this fresh single!
