Alexei Shishkin Releases Ode to Carl Dennis

While utilizing a different on Good Times, the songwriting capabilities of Alexei Shishkin are still quite evident on his new single, “Ode to Carl Dennis.” It was another one of the songs that took shape over a four day span with songwriting partner Bradford Krieger, with the musical composition coming earlier before applying the lyrics upon review. I love the up and down rise of the vocals matching the way the song seems to kind operate like a car going up and down a series of hills, hitting high notes, rolling down then back up again. A little directional change hits the song around the 1 minute and 2:20 mark, and that special little plot twist serves as a diversion in Alexei’s craft. If you’re looking to see what four days of improvisation sounds like, give Good Times a listen on September 5th via Run Defense.

Alexei Shishkin Shares Tika Taka (2006)

I really love the approach that Alexei Shishkin took on his latest track, and perhaps on the entirety of his new record, Good Times. He worked on the musical arrangement and structure with songwriting partner Brad Krieger, building the song entirely before adding lyrical content. When lyrics time came about, he worked on the spot, improvising the storytelling in its own fashion. For instance, those of you who are football fans will note the nod to the style of play for many a Barcelona team…and in 2006, I remember them deservedly beating Arsenal…something B.Gray and I always love to see. So dig in, marvel at the concept and prep for Alexei’s new album, which drops on September 5th.

Alexei Shishkin Announces Good Times

Spent last night at a bar called Good Times, so waking up to the announcement of a new record from Alexei Shishkin of the same name seems serendipitous. And, with that announcement comes this great tune, filling us in on the promise of Alexei’s forthcoming work. He’s operating with the perfect balance, if you ask me, as the track carefully plods in with some light notes, setting the backdrop for the tune. He fills that in with a bit of a bolder noise, pushing the sonic level way up high in a way that reminds me of a modern twist on some of the early Grandaddy LPs. Good Times will be released by Rue Defense on September 5th.

Rubber Blanket Offers Good Times

Made up of members of Wounded Lion and the Intelligence, it makes sense that Rubber Blanket would fall into my wheelhouse. Their latest tune certainly fines itself with some lineage to classic horror punk sounds like The Cramps, though this takes up more of an anti-pop approach, making it altogether more frightening. Don’t fret, there’s still some little joyful quirks lurking in the contents, like the dual vocal moments or the emphatic syllable bounce in certain words. It borders on being too smart for its own good, but hopefully the members other association will help guide the way. If you enjoy it, Our Fault is out June 29th via Mt. St. Mtn.
