Last Week’s Jams (3.6 – 3.10)

We covered tons of territory last week, particularly as we ran tons of little interviews in our Meet the SXSW Band features; it’s also the Spring season, so that means there are tons of announcements about new records and such. I was stoked to hear new stuff from Constant Follower and Mary Onettes, plus we premiered new tune from The National Honor Society and Hot Coppers. And, seeing as its SXSW, we got interviews back from Daiistar, Taleen Kali, Hamish Hawk and a ton more, all with little introductions plus their music. Or, you can listen to the jams below and see if they’re playing near you, wherever you find yourself!

Greg Mendez Announces Self-Titled Album

Over the last few years, I’ve definitely enjoyed Greg Mendez‘s work, but the announcement of a new self-titled LP comes with what might be his work to date. The Philly songwriter feels like he’s taking notes from the old Elliott Smith school of songwriting, allowing the listener to imagine themselves right next to Greg as he serenades. It’s a level of intimacy that feels often imitated, but Mendez knocks it out of the park, even opting for a more low-key arrangement throughout, maintaining that DIY ethos we’re all seeking. Greg Mendez, the album, will be out via Forged Artifacts and Devil Town Tapes on May 5th.

New Pop Ballad from Greg Mendez

I’ve really been enjoying short pop songs over the last years, which I suppose I owe to the likes of Tony Molina. But, today, I’m turning over towards the work of Greg Mendez, who just released this really great ditty I can’t stop listening to at the moment. Beginning ever-so-gently with this careful strum and airy vocal, crafting an immediate intimacy that sucks you into the song. Light arrangements begin to creep in from the distance, drums adding some nice textural tension; it all culminates in this nice energetic burst with a sparkling guitar that draws the song to a close. This track appears on the forthcoming Cherry Hell LP, which drops on February 28th via Forged Artifacts/Devil Town Tapes.
