My summer vacation is about to wrap up, so I’ve been trying to cram as much rock n’ roll into the site as I can, and I feel like nearing 30 new songs is a pretty solid outing. There was new stuff from ever-present acts like Gregor, Cate Le Bon, Giant Day and more. Plus, there were some brand newish acts popping up on the scene that I think are certainly worth everyone’s time: The Cords and the Cindys, both UK outfits oddly enough. Some ATX love for Stella and the Very Messed and the Wild Kindness both dropping new tunes. Plus, there are several slow burns that will space out the listen, so you’ve got almost two hours of last week’s jams to enjoy!

Gregor Announces Milk Thistle Salmon Blush

Australian artist Gregor has been a regular fixture on our site over the years; he’s released several albums through Chapter Music, but now goes out on his own for the forthcoming Milk Thistle Salmon Blush. As a songwriter, Gregor has mastered the balance between poetry and sound, as his arrangements often times feel like cinematic pieces, crafted to perfectly support the spoken word, as you’ll hear here. This tune has this futuristic pulse, and while it begins slowly, the tune opens up with a more rhythmic sample that begins to create a natural feeling of movement. His goal seems to be commentary on the mixture of the future with our own self-reflection, so keep an eye out for more as we inch towards the October release of the new record.

What a wild and crazy week that was. Tons of music, and tons of great albums. We suggested you listen to the latest LPs from Lunchbox, Amy O, Gregor and Stephen’s Shore, among others…so go back and revisit those records if you’re into full-length listens. But, if not, some of our favorite acts popped up after a bit of an absence; there was new stuff from both Quivers and Emma Russack, so the Aussie contingent was representing with new music. This My Best Unbeaten Brother track that opens up the playlist is a ripper, but don’t you dare skip beyond new Yea-Ming or Cats of Transnistria. Just a bunch of great jams for you to enjoy, so just get right to it!

Friday’s are a great day to kick back and absorb the new music that’s coming out, with a definite bonus for those of you who follow our site as there are new releases from some of our favorite artists. Amy O has an excellent record hitting today, plus you get the elegant sounds of Gregor if you’re looking for that immersive pop experience. Gregor Shares Angels Single

There aren’t a ton of artists out there making pop quite like Gregor does. You listen to his work and there’s so much space, allowing his voice to just reverberate as it billows through your speakers, much like in his newest single. I love the way it feels like Gregor is sort of haunting the shadows of this song; the guitar notes ring out, almost echoing while the dulcet tones from the vocals creep through all the empty space. And, just as one gets used to this sort of darkened stationary state, the vocals rise, a brief emphatic burst of up and down tones that faintly remind me of Bowie’s range within short phrases. Gregor’s work continues to beckon me with each new single; I’ll be looking forward to Satanic Lullabies, out May 10th via Chapter Music.

For some reason or another, we were rather preoccupied with the Austin goings-on, so perhaps we didn’t cover as much as we might have liked. I’ll be circling back through this week to try and get as much of it up as I can. But, we did have some really solid jams…and a few premieres…or whatever you call it. I was definitely feeling a little electronically inclined, covering new stuff from Maria Chiara Argiro and Cong Josie. Got blown away by the new Lightheaded track, not to mention fawning over tunes from Kindsight and Mammoth Penguins. Oh, and speaking of premieres…we had a new Unwed Sailor and a live cut from The Wind-Ups. Check them below.

Gregor Announces Satanic Lullabies

While Gregor‘s perhaps not a household name over in the States, his compositions have always resonated with me, particularly the Destiny LP. Today, the artist announces a new album, Satanic Lullabies, describing it as ‘ if pre-Maga Kanye made a Disney soundtrack.’ His dulcet tones always created that feeling of lullaby, but he’s clearly balancing than gentle expectations of his voice with the darker side alluded to in the album’s title. Where his last album was filled with striking emotions, this first single is pretty bare and stark, so I’ll be interested to see where the whole of the album goes. Satanic Lullabies is out via Chapter Music on May 10th.

Sweet Whirl + Gregor Cover Have You Ever Seen the Rain

Generally speaking, I shy away from cover songs; it’s just not my thing. But, who doesn’t have a soft spot for “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” Plus, who wouldn’t love to hear their favorite up and coming artists, like Sweet Whirl and Gregor unite to put their spin on it. The duo turn the classic rock ballad into this slinking synth pop snake that weaves its way into your brain, somehow nestling right next to the original. I love the dense combination of the vocals during the chorus, giving a heaviness to those notes, rather than letting them soar wistfully as they do in Credence’s version. Both artists are also great in their own right, so be sure to visit their solo work as well…all if you can find with Chapter Music!

Gregor Shares Final Single Before Destiny Drops

One of the record’s I’ve really been looking forward to hearing is Gregor‘s new album, Destiny. I just love the craftsmanship of his tracks, particularly from what we’ve heard thus far. For instance, here, it opens with this voice sort of hanging in this sparse musical backdrop. Soon, a beat drops in, swirling with shimmering cymbals and beats to really build this palpable texture that allows Gregor space to offer up his soulful croon. It’s like this magical place where you find trip-hop and lounge music intertwined behind an indie rock curtain. The show must go on, and it looks to be pretty special; Destiny drops on November 13th via Chapter Music.
