Gregor Shares Senseless

When listening through Destiny, the latest LP from Gregor, you’ll find that each song seems to take on a life of its own, like you’ll hear in “Senseless.” At first, it’s almost this sort of bewildering pop rock, buzzsaw guitars building a background wall while Gregor’s voice and synths rise to the song’s forefront. But, push the needle just a bit ahead to find that the song’s evolved into this collage of sounds that feel more traditional in their presentation, thought Gregor builds in various textures like violin and loops to sort of create this pop spiderweb that’s likely to catch any music aficionado. When I first put on Silver Drop a few years back, I was struck by this powerful new voice, simultaneously heavy and elegant; I’ve been a Gregor fan ever since. Today, a new album has been announced, and we’re teased with a track showcasing exactly what the project brings to the table. Musically, there’s a lush landscape, a realm crafted by deep percussive elements and a warm cloud of atmospheric wash. Enter the steadying voice of Gregor, tying it all together as guitar notes jangle around him; there’s this little moment around the 2:33 moment that really hit me, having this fragility as he pushes his voice, akin to Jarvis. Destiny will be out on November 13th via Chapter Music.

A little over a month ago we brought you the first single from Gregor; it was a smoothed out pop gem with an electronic background. This outing, Gregor utilizes reggae-style guitar chops to provide a natural rhythm to the song; it automatically gives the song a light quality that is sure to woo listeners. Of course, his voice has this Aussie/British affectation that you can picture crooning in some old school barroom during karaoke hour. The finer touches, such as the added guitar line between verses elevates this song immediately into the front of my playlist. Look for Silver Drop on October 5th via Chapter Music.

The Australian music scene is more than just those bright ringing guitars, so today we’ll turn our attention to the beautiful croon of Gregor. He’s preparing to release his debut album, and he’s shared this subtle number; it’s little more than voice, bass groove and a wash of keyboard sounds. It feels like a late night walk through a brightly lit street, capturing elements of darkness and light all at once; it’s pretty intoxicating upon repeat listens. The chorus barely steps out of line with the song, but you’ll notice a slight tonal change that only adds to the emotive power. Silver Drop is being released on October 5th via Chapter Music.

Pop Weirdness from Gregor

gregorThe sad truth of my life is that sometimes I take everything to seriously. And I mean everything. I forget to give in to emotion and silliness and let go…and then I hear something like Gregor. Oddly, I hear hints of Orange Juice, but mostly I just hear a pop musician willing to forgo modern cliches in order to make music that’s as weird as it is infectious. It’s just a reminder to let go and enjoy what’s coming through the speakers, and I definitely am digging the deep tones of Gregor’s voice. This track will appear on Thoughts and Faults, a collection of home recordings he’s releasing via Chapter Music on April 8th.
