Hard Left Has a New EP

hardleftYe with timid ears should look the other way, as Hard Left isn’t here to play any games. They open their brand new Economy EP with the pummeling title track, offering up stuttering licks while Comrade M growls atop; a little emphatic backing vocals doesn’t hurt the tune either. They follow it up with a slightly gentler call-and-response piece of catchy mod rock. You can flip the 7″ over and get to hear the band backing their friend and poet Tim Wells. Oh, and every song has a message, so you’ll likely leave your listening feeling smarter, angrier and focused on the world.

Hard Left Hits Hard

hlIt’s refreshing that there’s a group of old school rockers and label owners throwing down some brutal politico-punk.  In a landscape bogged down by nostalgia and copy-cat artists, Hard Left hit fast and hard, stomping through their latest single without looking around for camaraderie.  “Imagination” is most notable for the rabble-rousing growl of Mike, while the trumpet blasts and backing vocals of Donna seem like a rioting call to arms.  I love the fact that the band seemingly fit into their own small space in the musical sphere, doing things on their own terms; it’s precisely the way we’re meant to enjoy our rock n’ roll.  Look for the band to release their debut, We Are Hard Left next week; you can order it HERE.

Have You Been Listening to Hard Left

wahlIs your answer no? Then maybe you should rethink your listening habits.  Hard Left is a supergroup of sorts, though perhaps one most known to that too often mentioned underground world.  For my ears, there’s two things going on here that I really like: the band are carrying on the political rabble (some members may have been the first to bring that sound to your ears!) and there’s this guttural punk noise that could incite a circle-pit with your best friends…maybe even a riot. The band’s album We Are Hard Left will be released on May 12th via Future Perfect Records.

Hard Rock from Hard Left

hardTrying to cram as much hard rock into your day as possible, which is why I’m bringing you this new Hard Left track…the second tune from the new band.  It was first brought to my attention because it features Mike Schulman of Slumberland Records, but the song has this great boogie to it, hiding beneath the scuzzy recording.  Yea, there’s a bit of a growl to the vocals, but you’ve got to have a hint of anger when you’re singing about Skinheads, right?  The band will release this single on a 7″ via Future Perfect Records on December 8th; here’s to a better tomorrow.

New Single from Hard Left

hardleftSurely everyone knows of the great Slumberland Records, but did you know that the founder Mike S. was a hard-working musician himself?  He’s spent time in Manatee, and now he seems to have formed a rad little rock n’ roll band that deserves some attention, Hard Left.  They’ve only got one recorded song, and they’re operating under the guise of ‘terrace glam,’ though if you ask me it’s got more of a proto punk with a political bent.  It’s good to see people who run great labels out there putting their money where their mouth is.  Sorry, I can’t play anything.
