Last Week’s Jams (9.30 – 10.4)

It’s always strange when I feel like I didn’t do a good job covering new jams, yet I end the week with 20 or more new tunes we’ve tried to get you to crank up…and last week was definitely one of those…feel like I barely dipped my toes in the pond of goodness. Alas, there were some great tunes for you, particularly if you’re into the Australian scene, with new stuff from both Pop Filter and Skegss, not to mention the Oceanic adjacent Jim Nothing. Naked Roommate threw down an end of Summer block party, while Austin’s Cast of Thousands let us say hello to some old friends. Tons of stuff to indulge upon here, so feel free to let me know what I might have missed along the way.

Hhhhhh Release Can You Tell Me What Heaven’s Like

There’s a new hhhhhh track floating about, and well, I’m a fan of the band’s work, so I wanted to start off this week’s coverage giving it a little spin. Originally, the project was crafted to accompany the short film “Twenty Four Heaven,” a film wherein the protagonist downloads an app to connect with a lost one. For me, the song sort of feels like the waiting music, like Heaven’s put you on hold, so you’re just encouraged to let your mind drift into some sort of trance while you wait to converse with your lost loved one. Feels like the perfect Monday vibe, if you ask me.

Hhhhhh Shares the Garden

Imagine that you went back to the years of Animal Collective’s early work, like the time when we all were tripping over ourselves fawning for the band. Now, strip it down some of its barest elements and you’ll be in the land of hhhhhh, the project of Hector J. Guerra. For me, the song’s like this quiet melodic bit of striking pop; I just can’t escape how brilliant it feels, especially when you just let the tune resonate in your mind for a few plays. Sometimes you wake up and want to make sure you’re still alive, and in a strange sense, this was the tune for me, so here we are. If you dig, you’ll find this track on the From a Town of Strangers EP!
