Last Week’s Jams (11.10 – 11.14)

In a week where paywall was all the buzz in the indie rock world, we just did what we did. We opened the emails, we listened to the songs, and we tried to give you an idea of what you may or may not like…and we did it for free, for the love of the game! We had new music from Jason Balla aka Accessory, and the beautiful tones of Bill Callahan makes an appearance this week too! SXSW announced its first few musicians, and happy to see my homies in the All American Rejects as the opening of the festival. Club 8 offered up one of their monthly gems, while our friends at Keeled Scales announced the signing of Hiding Places. A lot to share this week, and you don’t have to pay for any of it! Enjoy!

Keeled Scales Sign Hiding Places

We love our good buds over at Keeled Scales, and we hope you all enjoy the good tunes they bring your way…like their latest signing Hiding Places. They announced the signing with this delightful slow burn indie rocker from the NYC outfit, and you’ll quickly hear why they’ve already got our ear. While the song opens with a distorted wall of noise, the tune quickly moves into territory of great pop songwriting, akin to the recent work of acts like Wednesday and Jay Som; it’s heavy, but never shying away from an affection for great hooks. The group plan to release a new LP via the label next Spring, so keep your ears warm and ready.

Pop Number from Rain on Monday

The moment the bouncing bass line jumped in on this Rain on Monday tune I was ready for the dance floor. It was going to be a solo outing, me dancing in place, swinging my arms awkwardly from side to side. Further on, the band seems to take notes from Shout Out Louds, though they offer a more subdued vocal turn during the chorus; there’s just a hint of gruffness through the tune. The group is a fairly new project from Sweden, so I promise to keep you informed as we get more info about the group in the future.
