Fuzzy Pop from Double Date with Death

This year I’ve been turned onto French label Howlin Banana Records, and it looks like they’ve scored another solid act with Quebec’sDouble Date with Death. Sure, the game’s a bit of a mouthful over here, but the song has this perfect blend of sharp garage rock notes, hidden beneath this fuzzy outer coat. The vocals aren’t omnipresent, but when they ride in, they carry this sort of dreamy vibe throughout, bouncing along with some late coos coasting towards the song’s finish. Looks like this track will appear on the band’s new effort, L’au Dela, which is slated for release in January of 2020.

Cool Tune from Baston

One of the hot new French labels I’ve been keeping an eye on is Howlin Banana Records, and they’ve just announced their newest release from Baston. The band brandishes this sort of propulsive post-punk, hanging out these angular guitar lines to sort of dance around thin air. In the vocals, you get this sort of darkened echo; it sort of hangs out on the outside of the tune, almost as if it was a third-person narrator setting the scene. I love how it feels heavy and powerful, yet still has this melodic underbelly that holds the tune together. Primates will be out November 29th.

Special Friend Share Before Video

Two things that Special Friendhave going for them at the moment…1) they reference a mix of Yo La Tengo/the Pastels in their sound 2) they hail from the same scene that’s given us recent faves like En Attendant Ana and Marble Arch. I mean, that would be enough, usually, but they’ve also go the songwriting chops to back that up. I love the casual quality of the guitars, sharp chords ringing brightly before quieted picking comes in. They also meld their vocals perfectly, with huge shared melodies that should warm any fan of good pop music. They’ll be releasing their new EP on September 27th via Howlin Banana Records!
