Pocket Full of Crumbs Drop In My Hands I Hold a Lucky Cricket

Another week and another great track from San Francisco and Cherub Dream Records. First, I’d like to applaud CDR for dropping releases on old school Tuesdays; I hate Friday drop dates for albums. Now…the below song from Pocket Full of Crumbs offers the perfect blend of slacker ethos and grungy vibes that rattle the speakers upon pressing play, which is a lot of what you’re going to expect when you press play on In My Hands I Hold a Lucky Cricket. Those of us inclined to love crashing discord will certainly hear the appeal, while the vocals settle you down; it’s like a scene where the vocals are the kid on the couch while the rest of the world swirls and moves in double speed around them. Loving this jam, so crank it up and stream the whole LP.

ATX Spotlight: New Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes

calrsaganIt comes as no surprise to folks in Austin that Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes should be our next big local export, as the band have been taking over this town show by show. Today they dropped a brand new single off brandishing their wall of noise and punishing vocals. For me, what’s always been impressive is the underlying pop sensibility in the band’s sound, coating their melodies with distortion and brooding bass lines. The band’s about to release their self-titled effort on August 19th via Super Secret Records; it’s time the rest of the world took note!

New Jam from MMOSS

If you haven’t heard of MMOSS, then I suggest you trudge back in time and find yourself a copy of i; it was one of those records I honestly adored so much that I really didn’t share it with too many people.  Now, they’ve got a new effort coming out on one of my favorite labels, Trouble In Mind, and this first single is pretty remarkable if you consider the group recorded the entire upcoming album, Only Children, at home.  This first track from the LP has this rise and fall quality of sounds, yet it is able to hold onto this mesmerizing emotional pull that evolves just as the song does.  Definitely mark your calendars for November 13th, as you’ll get a chance to hear more from these New Hampshire lads.

New Music from Stephin Merritt

Long have I adored Stephin Merritt, in pretty much any capacity. So, today Merge Records announced they’d be selling Obscurities, a collection of Merritt rarities, not just those with his work with the Magnetic Fields.  Some of these would stem from his work on the science-fiction he did with Lemony Snicket, while others would be culled from those hard to get releases man MF fans swoon over.  Merritt even commented on the songs, telling Sterogum that he thought this might have been the best song he’d ever penned that was meant for a wedding.  While I’ll admit, it has its beauty, in my mind the winner will always be “It’s Only Time” from the album, i.  Regardless, the world’s always a better place with Merritt’s writing.
