Last Week’s Jams (2.5 – 2.9)

We had a windows down car drive end to the week, so here we are looking at all the hits we covered in the last week. There were a few jams like the new single from Gentleman Jesse or the Pheromoans latest that aren’t anywhere on DPS, but we’ve got tons of other jams from the week. I really loved the new bops from Johnnie Carwash, Icarus Phoenixand Flowertown, while Ray snuck in some new Mini Trees and Acid Tongue. Plus, we tried to suggest you take listens to new LPs from Itasca, David Nance, Dead Bandit and Pylon Reenactment Society, so if anything, sample a tune here and there from the new records. New Music from Icarus Phoenix

I’m a longtime Drew Danburry stan, so when I heard that there was a new Icarus Phoenix tune on the horizon, I rushed to press play…and here I am admitting I got exactly what I expected. Seemingly settled on a new lineup, it seems the band have taken Drew’s vision of off-kilter bedroom folk ditties and elevated them to a grander vista; it’s a place where you’ll find similarities with acts like Grandaddy or Earlimart, though Drew always seems to be winking at the listener with some of his wordplay. Always nice to dive into new Icarus Phoenix…and looks like we’re in luck as the Son EP is scheduled for March 1st release.

Been a hot minute since we compiled all our weekly jams into one nice little playlist for you, but here we are again, wrapping up last week on a Monday. We’ve got tons of great jams in store, with some of the latest releases also featured. Austin gets some love, with singles/videos from Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Queen Serene and Blood (kind of/sort of). We also ran some new videos from the likes of Red Pants and Breakup Haircut, not to mention the newest jams from Jeanines and Say Sue Me…so you know, this playlist is going to be your jams.

Going back through my emails this week, I’ve been sleeping on dropping this Icarus Phoenix video, which has been out for a hot minute. Still, I love Drew Danburry’s songwriting, particularly in this project, so it seems fitting as I’m circling back to include the latest tune from the forthcoming Sometimes Our Shadow Gets in the Way. This round, Drew is joined up by Josaleigh Pollett, who adds a nice balance to the song and helps detail the song’s story of a toxic relationship; she plays a nice foil with a more pensive tone in her voice, mixing up the textural balance in a traditional duet sense. This new LP will be out on Telos Tapes on April 7th.

Welcome to another Monday my friends. First, taking a minute here, as I’m writing this post, to celebrate the 7 day young Rhys Bennett Lankford! That’s right, went and had me another one of those kids, and its been a lot of fun, and well, we’re super stoked on the lil’ fella. That said, we also had a short week, so maybe we didn’t get as many jams in as we might otherwise. But, rest assured, we’ve got a pretty solid little collection of tunes here for you to begin your week, with quite a few ATX appearances from the likes of Lola Tried, American Friend and more. You know what to do, press play and stuff.

Well, today might be the beginning of a little decline for the next few weeks, as you’re likely going to be pressing play on this just as I’m bringing Nathan Jr. Jr. into the world. But, like him, you are blessed with these incredible tunes that graced our site last week, all of which will enable you to recover from your Labor Day doldrums. Hopefully this week brings you a great many things!

Icarus Phoenix Shares Eddie King Video

When I first stumbled upon Icarus Phoenix, I kept it close; it was something so special and personal that I didn’t want to share it, not yet anyways. But, I realized that wasn’t fair because Drew Danburry’s songwriting is just too brilliant to keep locked away. And so here we are, a week away from the release of No Tree Can Grow to Heaven Unless Its Roots Reach Down to Hell, with one final gem to share. “Eddie King” is great storytelling from Danburry, and in a sense reminds me of a pop rock version of Jeffrey Lewis. The song’s got these little bits of cascading guitar to give some punch, yet it still has that personable feel you get from an Icarus Phoenix release. Plus, you have to give credit to Drew, as he hand drew and animated this video. Look for the new LP from Telos Tapes next Friday, September 10th.

Ray and I go back to work full-time, kids and all, so let’s start off our first real week of work with last week’s sweet sweet jams. It’s just an easy way to ease into your Monday with a look back at what you might have missed had you not been glued to our site! We’re all over the place with new stuff from Suuns and the Shivas, plus some Austin love as always by including the latest from TC Superstar, Nolan Potter, Brother Sports and a tune off the new Alexalone LP…so browse, enjoy, tell your friends. By now, you’re likely aware of my adoration for Drew Danbury’s Icarus Phoenix project; he’s been dropping singles left and right as he prepares for the release of the new LP. This run through, you get a slight heavier punch in the getting, offering up an almost rock vibe, though it’s quickly peeled back for the voices, allowing for the intimate swoon that’s made Danburry’s work so enchanting since I hit upon the self-titled Icarus Phoenix LP. There are definitely some vocal notes here that remind me of Clem Snide, so I’m definitely inclined to just sit here and fawn, but I’ll let you decided. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Drew keeps this a family affair, allowing his 12 year old nephew create the video here. Look for the new LP via Telos Tapes on September 10th.

Bops of the Week: July 5th – 9th

Here we are on another Monday, about halfway through the musical calendar, and while I should probably be working on one of those magically meaningless “Midway Best Of,” I feel like I’d be letting down our friends if we didn’t do our wrap-up of the goods from last week. Honestly, and I won’t throw out names, but there are some jams that would certainly make my best of the year list…one in particular. Can you guess it? Also, some of the new stuff by Love, Burns and Normil Hawaiians isn’t streaming, so I linked you to some of their other work you might enjoy. Mostly, it’s Monday, and I like to make this playlist for my friend Marc, so he doesn’t have to read anything and just gets music. Happy Monday folks!
