Last Week’s Jams (3.30 – 4.3)
I started off with a bunch of bangers, then ended up with a sputter, but such are the perks of a site beholden to no one…we just get to write about what we love. For me, I was really enjoying the newest single from Victoria, not to mention great new stuff from Rural France and Greg Mendez. RayRay brought out some bangers from Honey I’m Home (one of our favorite SXSW acts) and Oakwood too. It was also good to see our pals in Shortcuts back at it, with a new lineup featuring local legend Eric B from Big Bill playing bass; it’s an expat power pop affair! There’s a few OG versions of songs that got remixes this week, so when you’re cranking Comet Gain and the BVs, feel free to visit the site to hear their remixes and remasters!

You’re going to crank this playlist, and it’ll feature a little of last week and a little of the week before; I got behind during SXSW, so I tried to crank out as much content as I could to play catch up. Favorite and former local Austinites like Living Set and Matthew Squires made the cut, while I also got super hyped to see there was another fun Gelli Haha track out there. Gun Outfit offered up another rad single you’ll get to hear, plus perennial ATH faves Two-Man Giant Squid shared their newest single; I have their latest sliding up the to the title track from the excellent Hannah Lew LP. So jump below and let me know if anything stands out.

When it rains it pours, and if we’re looking back in time, last week it was pouring with great jams and great records. Whether I was bopping to new Winspear signing Swapmeet, or cranking up that new She’s Green single, there just wasn’t enough time to cover it all. I mean, there was new Voxtrot, new Heavenly…and even Ceremony dropped a live LP, and that’s just the good records that hit. We had new music from Accessory and Season 2, plus new jams from King Tuff and Deary. If you click play below, you’re in for a good hour or more of sweet music, so what are you waiting for?
We covered just under 20 songs last week, though the Leaf Library’s brilliant new music hasn’t quite made it to the streaming services yet, but don’t fret, as there’s plenty to devour! Honestly, the first three tracks on the recap playlist are just straight jams you’ll want to check out: Special Friend, Jon Hood, and Prism Shores all delivered, with Jon Hood scratching a particular itch that I adore. Little love for some Austin acts like Genuine Leather and Sundozer, plus love for newer favorites like Endearments and Inner Magic. Little bit all over the place for an early Monday morning run, but in the best way, as you get hit after hit if you just press play below.
What a music-filled week we had over here; there was new stuff, covers and even some live show coverage from our friend Michael Maly. Austin was on fire, with a new Voxtrot track, new Paper Sister jam, and of course, those photos from the Almost Heaven show that highlighted our local coverage. I’d also like to say Natalie Jane Hill, who is blowing me away with her new work, is like Austin adjacent, though she no longer lives in town. Old Nathan loves like Red, Pinks and Purples and the Rural Alberta Advantage made an appearance, plus, if we’re looking at long-winded names we wrote about, we couldn’t miss Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever‘s return either! Lots of stuff to enjoy below. Happy Monday!
The fun thing about running a site that doesn’t beg you to pay subscriptions is we can kind of cover whatever we want, whenever we want. I started off the week kind of tossing my hair back to the previous week to get into the new Imaad Wasif and Club 8 jams. Then as we went forward, we covered the last singles from excellent records from both Annabelle Chairlegs and Joyce Manor. Not one to miss out on Austin jams, we got the new tune up from Don’t Get Lemon. Sprinkled it all in with some ATH faves like Prism Shores, Charm School and King Tuff. Give it all a listen!
It was a short week, and we tried to cover as much as we could, getting up a fresh batch of 15 songs (technically 16, but Mt. Fog isn’t on the DSPs) to get you through this cold day. RayRay loved the new madfolk single, but I found some solace in some local jams, as the Living Set brought us another incredible gem. Van Chamberlain had another stunner too, and we were also introduced to Season 2 (the band!). Found my way back to some folkier moments too with new Bill Callahan and Natalie Jane Hill. There’s a lot to dig through, so tune in and crank it up!
It’s increasingly hard not to get swept away in the negative emotions of our global crisis (sorry for our behavior), so sometimes you need to settle into a bop that just grooves and delivers big hooks. Well, meet the new single from France’s
We covered a ton of ground last week, though our playlist is missing some of my favorite jams…the new Special Friend and the Leaf Library aren’t on DSPs at the moment. Still, there’s great pop music on here, like the first singles from the forthcoming Maureens and Fort Not LPs, deliciously kicking things off on our playlist. Got big named hitters in the mix too, like Kim Gordon; I got some good noise in too with new Trauma Ray and Dog Chocolate, so the playlist is all over the place, in the best way.
