New Indiepop from Den Baron

I love how a respected label ends up sending you down a delicious ear candy-filled wormhole; the next few hours of my listening I owe to Cloudberry Records and Den Baron. The German outfit had some late 90s/early 00s success with Apricot/Shelflife, but their comeback 7″ sounds absolutely delightful. It all begins with this teasing piano, opening into this guitar shuffle that ushers in the casual croon of the vocals; I love how they get draped with off-set backing vocals. And, the track doesn’t fall into the trap of wrapping things up; they step up the game with these stabbing vocal lines and “bops” after the 3 minute mark, riding the track throughout the rest of the number. This is the A-side track for the band’s new 7″, which drops later this Spring.

Bouncy Indiepop from Jeanines

Slumberland Records had a great week last week…a new video from Business of Dreams, an EP from Papercuts and a cover from Frankie Rose…but the best news was the announcement of this Jeanines LP. There’s an infectiousness bounce tearing through your speakers the instant you press play; it’s matched by that understated jangle in the guitars that makes indiepop nerds swoon. Alicia Jeanine’s vocals have this crystalline quality that sort of ride the melodic wave of the track itself; I’m not sure I’ve been so quickly charmed as I was upon first listen here…and it’s short, so go on and press repeat as many times as you can fit into the next hour. The band’s self titled debut will be out on June 14th.

Red Sleeping Beauty Celebrate Stockholm LP with New Single

Since their fabulous return, Red Sleeping Beauty have been working pretty hard on crafting delightful pop numbers, and today they release Stockholm, their new LP! At first this tune caught me off guard; it has a much deeper electronic pulse than the majority of the band’s work of late; it’s heavier and dark. But, the group are able to play upon that, working with melody that will never make you think of this track as a dark club banger. I mean, just listen to the chorus and delivery of the lines “New York City girls, New York City boys;” it’s the perfect balance of club hit and bedroom pop. I love this tune; find the album over at Matinee Recordings, out today!

More New Music from the Ballet

After sharing the humorous sincerity of “But I’m a Top,” the Ballet return today with the other side of the coin, pulling back on the humor just a wee bit. The story here seems to be the anxiety of worrying about whether you love someone too much, and that feeling that things might not be reciprocated. The hooks are still in there, starring these light little keyboard notes maneuvering in and out behind that dancing guitar line. Sure Greg Goldberg has stylistic similarities to Stephin Merritt, but there’s this softness to his voice, a fragility that makes him feel just a touch more open and approachable. This is the second single from Matchy Matchy, out on May 17th via Fika Recordings.

Sunday Records Drops LIPS EP

Cornwall’s LIPS are about to be the next great act on the storied Sunday Records; tomorrow they’ll drop their debut EP…and get ready for everyone to swoon. In starting out the EP, the drop a bold indiepop challenge in “Apartment;” it’s fueled by these dancing dreamy guitar jangles and feathery vocals from Rachel Anstis. Antis is the clear winner here, though she steps aside to let the band do their best to get you to kick up your shoes. Skip down a song and you’ll find “Walls” toying with the fuzzier “gaze” side of the realm. Still, Anstis steals the show, moving between angelic notes and calming cool, running through the song like its her own vocal playground. “Sunken” turns around to show you just how far the outfit can take their pop sensibility, shaking about between sharp angular cuts and hazy notes that tear through your speaker. I’m putting my money down now that this is one of the Top 5 EPs of the year!

New Old Indiepop from Baby Lemonade

You’ve got to leave it up to Roque and Cloudberry Records to unearth some old indiepop gems we can all clamor about. He’s one of the few true indiepop fans still writing and unearthing acts all the time, and then putting his money behind it, as he’s now doing with Baby Lemonade. The Scottish outfits had a handful of singles and an album in the 80s (note: this is not Arthur Lee’s backing band!), but other than a few blips on some 2000s compilations, they went largely unnoticed and unremembered. That’s a sad thing, as you’ll hear below; this track sounds like it could fit perfectly into any lineup I’d dream up; it’s got that bouncing rhythm section and those sharply saccharine vocals that are destined to charm your socks off. Press play. Have fun. Look for a new compilation of music from the band this Spring!

Mellow Pop Vibes from Mirror Trash

I think perhaps the greatest thing about the Internet is realizing that someone far away, in some distant land that I’ll never visit, is crafting music that I wish I’d created. Such is the case with Brunei’s Mirror Trash, but I feel like that makes sense, as the area around Indonesia are renown for their pop aficionados. On the recently released Reform EP, I’ve marveled at the joy in “Vacancies.” The song has this dangling guitar line that sort of meanders in and out of the vocals, occasionally spliced with a sharper version that knifes its way through. The aforementioned vocals hang out in the air, like a fog creeping into your subconscious. Definitely a good way to start your Tuesday!

Don’t Sleep on The Catenary Wires

The Catenary Wires history is perhaps far deeper than their discography, but in their short time, Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey have already worked with some of my favorite labels in Elefant, WIAIWYA and Matinee…and now their sophomore release is slated for new powerhouse, Tapete Records. This fresh single puts the band’s dynamic at the forefront, relying upon the interplay between the two, trading vocal duties with one another, uniting in certain instances to maximize the harmony; Amelia has this sparkling nostalgic movie star tone, while Rob has this more forlorn croon. The string arrangement dropping in just before the 3 minute mark keeps listeners aware that both the music and voice will be broad sweeping on Til the Morning; it’s out June 14th via Tapete.

Nah Drop New Indiepop Gem

There’s all sorts of sub-genres within the realm of indiepop; you’ve got the frantic jangling sort, the twee as fuck, the nonchalant bedroom pop and you’ve got the swinging croon. I like to bounce all over, but it seems Nah are out to perfect the crooning side, and they’re pretty damn near close with this new single. This number features this understated guitar shuffle working beneath, backed by a swinging rhythm section that drives the song forward; I also never shy away from a band with a sweet harmonica solo that actually fits the track. Ultimately, the majesty of the song stems from the vocal interplay between Sebastian and Estella; it’s like they’re singing to one another from opposite sides of the room, and we’re all caught up in the melodious dialogue. Put this on play and don’t look back!

Fresh Elva Track for You

I’ve seen lots of lists about the most anticipated albums of the next few months, and sadly, none of the ones I’ve seen include Elva; I’m here to remedy that for me, and for you. “Ghost Writer” is the band’s newest single from their forthcoming Winter Sun LP. It has this spry bounce to it from the churning of the guitar chords; it reminds me an indiepop version of early Beulah. The big difference here, at least in what we’ve heard thus far, is that Ola takes the reigns on the vocals, with Elizabeth (of Allo’ Darlin) taking up the backing vocal roll, and together they craft this sublime harmony that rides throughout the song…all the way to the fuzzy guitar chord that jumps in for the song’s last minute. Winter Sun drops on April 19th via Tapete Records.
