The Color Waves Get Cloudberry Records Back on Track

colorwavesOkay, so it’s not like Cloudberry ever really fell off, but they definitely had slowed down the production of one of the greater indiepop labels out there, so it’s good to see that they’re getting back on their game…especially with this great new song from The Color Waves.  There’s a wayward jangle/ring to the guitars, but it’s well-paced, so things don’t seem forced into the genre.  Vocals warmly wrap themselves around every turn in the song, not quite soaring, but definitely with some lofty ambitions.  The 7″ with this single will be issued later on this summer, but for now you can just rejoice in another great slice of pop music.

skittlesFor a long while now, we’ve been praising the work of Skittle Alley, and they are slowly unleashing early versions of the tracks that will fill up their new LP. It’s light-hearted indiepop, filled with jangling guitar work, precision percussion and a really warm vocal.  These are the kinds of songs that true indiepop fans dream about.  The French act haven’t released much information on their upcoming LP, but the songs they’ve been leaking out are nothing short of superb…get acquainted.

Shimmering Indiepop from The Proctors

10616276_850893441590045_4372778612800772383_nI love the guitar sound on this track from The Proctors.  It’s got this crystalline quality, yet it definitely has faint hints of jangling about it.  Still, the song wouldn’t succeed if the vocals didn’t fit right inside the world crafted by the band; they’re not too high, nor too low, in the mix, as if everything is working in unison. The band’s last effort, Everlasting Light, was simply magical, but in this tune, I hear even greater things to come our way soon.  No word on exact release date, or title for the record, but you can be assured that indiepop fans are going to fall head over heels for anything the group put out.

Jigsaw Releases Lost Indiepop Gem from The Concubines

11350628_10152928935861705_3548933426775354126_nFeeling like today’s mostly going to be a playful sort of day around these part, so I’m stoked to have found a pretty new discovery for myself, The Concubines.  The band has been on a long hiatus while chief songwriter Jeff is abroad, but Jigsaw Records dug up the gem and have opted to release the band’s I’ve Tried Subtlety, which was recorded back in 2003.  It’s amazing to me how this band still fit into the modern landscape, despite having written this bunch of indiepop songs twelve years ago. It’s filled with a jangling bounce and storytelling lyrics, so pick it up now, if you so wish.

Fresh Indiepop from The Popguns

popLast year the Popguns returned via Matinee Recordings, making a big splash with throngs of indiepop masses.  But, it looks like once that songwriting bug hit the band, they couldn’t stop, already prepping the release of a new EP.  The opening track, “Still Waiting for the Winter” should already have piqued your interest, having appeared on the aforementioned album, Pop Fiction.  But, there will also be three exclusive new tracks to reassure your fandom.  I’ve posted one of those new tracks below, and it’s perfect…no need for more words other than that.  Look for the Still Waiting for the Winter EP this July.

Indiepop Delight from Seabirds

burdsThis song couldn’t have come at a better time; it’s been a frustrating week with our server being down and lost data and what not.  So, the perfect indiepop song is always going to make life grand, thus one of the many reasons I love this Seabirds tune.  From the excellent guitar work, including the casual solo in the middle of the tune, to the perfect melodic vocal touch, it just makes you feel warm all over, and I won’t complain about that. The band have just finished their debut Meet Me in the Silence, which is slated for a July release via the great people at Matinee Recordings. Make your day better and listen to this song.

Skittle Alley Unleash Two More Demos

skittlesCan these guys release an album already! Earlier this year we were treated to a nice little studio demo of a new Skittle Alley tune, and just yesterday they unleashed two more great tunes in the demo version; they have me, as well as other indiepop fans aching for the group’s new album. One of the tunes is an oldie that was recorded, while the other just seems to be a beautiful new piece that will hopefully appear from the band later.  It doesn’t matter where or when really, as we should spend the rest of our day just appreciating these delightful tunes, so here you go.

Another Reason to Buy the Expert Alterations 12″

expertA long while ago I caught Expert Alterations here in Austin, along with some other great acts.  I raved about the band and their perfect indiepop sound, immediately posting a song to get you hyped to their sound.  Soon after, they agreed to put out a record with Slumberland and Kanine, and we’re getting another listen.  It’s a jangly number, fitting in the appropriate level of cool bounce to every turn of a word.  I like the drum work in the middle of the tune, essentially creating a breakdown that sets you up for the rest of the tune. Look for the EP to be release on June 2nd.

Friday is for Finnmark!

finnyI’ve backed the boys in Finnmark! for quite some time, and I’m really excited to hear their brand new album, Things Always Change.  There’s a delightful jangle to the work of the band on their latest single, although I’ll admit there’s a great deal of maturity here, in both songwriting and the vocals.  It reminds me of the best of Cats on Fire, so you can’t really ignore something this special. This ditty is brief, spanning just beyond the 2 minute mark, thus allowing you to get your pop fix over and over again in quick succession.  The band’s debut will be released via Beko Disques on May 15th, and it looks to be something really really special…the sort of album indiepop fans will hold dear for years to come.

Skittle Alley Are Back At It

10477397_10152746068322091_6991957065971955556_nI feel like I’ve been neglecting my one true love, indiepop as of late.  But, luckily I was treated to a magical new tune from Skittle Alley while browsing the Internet today.  As of now, the tune is titled as a “demo,” but I kind of hope they keep the aesthetic going into the mastering process. There’s a twinkling effect to the guitars, and the vocals are delivered perfectly, leaving your heart dreaming, just as great indiepop should do. No word on when will get to hear an entire album worth of material, but if it keeps going in this direction it’s going to be marvelous.
