Ontario’s Ellis has Born Again coming out in April of this year, but you, of course, want a preview of all those songs, right? Lucky for you, she’ll be bringing her songs down from Canada to present them to you in person at SXSW. Not sure who she is or why you should care? Get to know her a little bit below.
Going through all the bands coming into town for SXSW, Lightning Bug made my list immediately. Last year’s October Song was both noisy and pretty; it reminded me of Radio Dept in a lot of ways, but maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. Regardless, I’m really excited to see what they’ll have to offer in the live setting. Take a minute to get to know a little about the band below!
I love a great Australian voice, and we’ve seen so many come across our pages recently, like Ali Barter, who we’ve mentioned in the past. But, it’s not always easy for acts to get across the pond, so I’m really excited that she’ll be make her way across to the US for this year’s SXSW. It’s never a year without one great Aussie act or another! Last year she released Hello, I’m Doing My Best, and as we see here, she’s in LA working on the follow-up. SXSW seems like the perfect time to work out some kinks. See what else Ali has to say below.
The annual SXSW conference always has up-and-coming talent on the roster; Billie Eilish was there long before she broke out to the masses. A bit of a different genre, but 18 year-old Sammy Brue is in the same spot; he’s a young musician just trying to get his name out there before his new album Crash Test Kid drops on June 12. We’re really excited for Moaning to drop their new LP, Uneasy Laughter…and instead of the traditional LP release show in LA, the band have opted to spend their whole week in Austin during SXSW playing the shit out of those songs. From what we’ve heard so far, it rules…plus it never hurts to have Sub Pop in your corner. Get to know the band after the jump!
SXSW is meaningful time to all of us here at ATH. It allows us to now only see some great bands, but to also meet some truly amazing people from all over the globe. One of our dear SXSW buddies hails from Glasgow and originally turned us onto Catholic Action a few years ago at a showcase he helped put together. Today I am pleased to share this short interview from the band prior to their appearance in Austin next month. Hit it after the jump.
Part of the fun in SXSW is discovering new bands both before and during the festival as you see where the wind takes you. For me, Kentucky based scream pop group GRLwood is one of those new bands and I’m already really digging what I’m hearing. Philadelphia based Beach Slang has long been a favorite around the ATH offices. Through some turmoil in the past, founder and leader James Alex has managed to persevere and create some killer tunes over the years. Of course this means we were overjoyed to have Alex answer our SXSW interview questions this year. You can find his answers after the jump.
Denver, by way of Brooklyn, based band The Still Tide is led by the enigmatic front woman Anna Morsett. Though she doesn’t always do things on her own, she is the brains behind the band. When Standard Fare called it a day, Emma Kupa moved on to from Mammoth Penguins. I’ve been a huge fan from day one, and There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win was one of my favorite LPs last year. All that said, I’ve never caught the band live, so I’m more than excited to finally get to see them at SXSW this year. We caught up with the group real quick to grab some answers to our little interview.
