SXSW Interview: Ellis

Ontario’s Ellis has Born Again coming out in April of this year, but you, of course, want a preview of all those songs, right? Lucky for you, she’ll be bringing her songs down from Canada to present them to you in person at SXSW. Not sure who she is or why you should care? Get to know her a little bit below.

ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?

E: Ellis from Hamilton, On.

ATH: Describe your groups sound.

E: Emo dream pop.

ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2020?

E: My record born again comes out April 3!

ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?

E: Yes! its been hard to choose, but well be playing mostly new songs from the upcoming record (with a couple of oldies because they slap).

ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd is growing ancy. How would your band deal with such a situation?

E: Not gonna lie, sounds like a kind of sick bill! id play my heart out and hope for the best.

ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. Which band friends will be here?

E: So many good ones! Excited to see Beabadoobee, Disq, Frances Quinlan, Great Grandpa, Ian Sweet, Long Beard, Rose Dorn, Sean Henry, Mal Blum, Slow Pulp, Squirrel Flower, Strange Ranger, Sorry, Why Bonnie, and my friends Rat Boys, Ellevator and Luna Li.

ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?

E: I’m constantly making Spotify playlists- currently obsessed with the new Waxahatchie singles and Caroline Polachek. that and true crime podcasts.

ATH:Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.

E: In the desert of California & Frank Ocean is headlining (might already exist).

ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?

E: La Croix and gummy bears.

ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?

E: I have no good answer for this question (theres a good reason Im a musician and not a taco restaurateur) except that i am so excited to eat tacos in Austin xx.
