Last Week’s Jams (1.9 – 1.13)

We had a rough start last week, with a wee bit of server issues…plus getting back into work after some time off. But, we came back to a bunch of sweet tunes from some ATH favorites…new videos from Blues Lawyer and En Attendant Ana, not to mention one that tied up the excellent LP from Doom Flower. I was blown away by another fresh track from Joyeria, and RayRay did a little write up on our friends in Why Bonnie. I was really in love with that Grey Factor tune we ran at the end of the week, but it hasn’t made it onto streaming platforms, so check that out before digging into new EPs from Dippers and Peel Dream Magazine.

Jackie Mendoza Drops New Video

I’m always going to give Jackie Mendoza some love on this site, particularly when I can kickstart your day with a fun bit of solid gold pop. This song’s narrative circles around a love story from a youthful perspective, albeit one going on during a pandemic; the young couple is just excited to go off on a dream vacation, and there, they get “Maui’d.” Sure, the lyrics are silly at times, but who gives a shit; there’s a rad hook throughout, which kicks a nice bounce through your speakers…clearly I’m a sucker for it. Jackie’s new album Galaxia de Emociones drops on March 4rd via ZZK Records.

Last Week’s Jams (12.5 – 12.9)

If your one of the seven people that hit up our site regularly (thanks mom!), then you might notice a title change. Nothing big, but just dropped a word because I was tired of pretending to be too clever. I’m not. Alas, we are still out here covering as much music as we have time for, and still trying to figure out how to incorporate the TMZ style drama that makes the cool sites so popular. So, for me, last week had some highlights I was pretty stoked upon; I got to hear solid returns from Lust for Youth and Jackie Mendoza, not to mention another brilliant electropop goodie from Das Kope. We got the announcement of new Julian Never, Galore and Blue Lawyer LPs, which should make everyone in the Bay Area proud. Plus there’s a great show preview/review from J.Wags on Golden Dawn Arkestra, so be sure to check out his work!

Jackie Mendoza Announces Galaxia de Emociones

When Jackie Mendoza dropped her LuvHZ EP, folks were clamoring for her, and we too, were fortunate to get Jackie on a SXSW show at that time. Today, we finally get that long awaited long-player, titled Galaxia de Emociones. Personally, I love how Jackie seems to balance the pop stylings of Latinx pop-stars of the moment, while still building in crafty samples and beats; it’s almost like its built for those dark corners of late night dance clubs. That thick beat has me salivating at what’s in store when this LP drops next Spring via ZZK Records, so turn it up and let that beat drop!

Jackie Mendoza Shares Tune for Exitos Varios Comp

There’s so much to love about this post and song, so bare with me. For starters, this track appears on the forthcoming Exitos Varios Compilation…a compilation organized by the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers; the proceeds go to United We Dream, an organization that aids undocumented immigrants; as a human, let alone a Texan, this is an issue of great importance. Second, a few years ago I managed to grab Jackie Mendoza at the last minute on a very last minute SXSW show at Barracuda (RIP); she was just starting to make a name for herself on her solo work, and this one here feels really special. On the tune Mendoza says this”is a song about refusing to cave into the pressures of changing the ways I express myself as a Mexican-American musician.” Why would you want to when it sounds this fucking good? It’s like old-school trip-hop with a vibrancy that can only be expressed by a person straddling two distinctive cultures. Buy the Exitos Varios Comp tomorrow HERE.

Jackie Mendoza Announces Debut EP

Usually, I don’t like to hype on whatever the big blogs are hyping on, but I’m already a huge fan of Jackie Mendoza, so I might as well continue that streak. For years I’ve been jamming out to Gingerlys, the band she fronted for some time, which was adored by indiepop nerds all over. Interestingly, while her solo work definitely feels like her, it’s great to see how expansive her sound has gotten. Samples create this ethereal world where her vocals walk like ghosts through gurgling bleeps and bloops, which seems exactly the vibe they chose for the video here. LuvHZ EP will drop on April 26th via Luminelle. You can also jump back to last week and check out Jackie’s responses to our SXSW questionnaire HERE. Hopefully I can run into her at the festival and discuss her reggaeton appreciation.
