The Year in Indiepop…According to Nathan

As we’re all looking back on the year 2019, I tend to gravitate towards lists with little agenda, other than to shine a light back on the year in the areas I adore. For one, the indiepop scene. Now, there’s always a great big debate about what indie pop is, so for all intents and purposes, I admit that I just don’t care, so the genre’s purists can yell at me later. Now, this may read as a best of, but merely this is the stuff that stuck out in my brain, so if I missed something, I love you and I’m sorry. Honestly, it just gave me a chance to make a fun playlist (2+ hours!) full of hits for all you pop fans.

Jetstream Pony Share I Close My Eyes Video

I’m a few days late to the game, but the new track from Jetstream Pony is just to good not to share with you all, especially as I’m the 666th viewer of the below video! Counting in with drum sticks, the song almost immediately jumps into this fuzzy stomp from the rhythm section, keeping your head bobbing for a solid 2.5 minutes. Of course, the light jangle and ring of the guitars crafts the perfect juxtaposition there, which sets the mood for the warm emotions of the vocals; I like how they stay steady and calm until the slight pop turn of the chorus comes in to play. This gem is on their brand new 7″ for Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten, out tomorrow…but hopefully there’s a full length just around the bend.

Okay, so I don’t normally go out of my way to share a demo, but I absolutely loved Jetstream Pony‘s Self-Destruct EP, so I’m rather excited to hear they’re working on wrapping up an LP for the near future…sharing this demo from one of the tracks. I loved the heavy tones at work in this version; it seems like the band’s really ready to unleash a wall of noise on us. But, as is their style, the vocals have this gentle curl to them, leaving you with that juxtaposed pop sensibility that makes their songs so enjoyable. This is still a version at work, but other than some mixing, it sounds pretty solid to me!

Jetstream Pony Cover the Softies for KUS

I’m not one to typically write about cover songs, unless, of course, it comes via one of my current favorites covering one of my all time favorites. The Softies gave us the writing Jen and Rose, and now they’re being covered by Jetstream Pony. This song will appear on the Kleine Untergrund SchallplattenLabel Compilation, compiling tracks from the label’s very stable roster…both Jetstream and KUS were in our Best of Indiepop list. This version has a slightly noisier bent than the original, though they still include those wondrous harmonies. the rest of the compilation includes other ATH faves like the Pale Lights and the BVs, so grab one HERE.

Everyone has their own definition of indiepop; but I tend to ascribe to the original craft where DIY aesthetics and a softer response to punk were all the rage. But, to each their own. So I went through last year to compile what I think is a pretty all encompassing Best of Indiepop 2018; there’s no order, just a collection of really great indiepop. It’s not every day you get to delve into the musical world of pop supergroups, but alas, that’s where we are with Jetstream Pony, a band composed of members hailing from acts like Trembling Blue Stars and the Wedding Present. In this new single, they toy with us, delivering a thirty second guitar intro, meandering through your speakers. Then the rhythm section jumps right in, and let’s face it, you’re immediately hooked on this track. The guitars have a jagged edge, but the song has this sugary sheen that’s leaps and bounds above any other purveyor of pop music at the moment. This excellent tune will appear on the group’s new Self-Destruct Reality EP, which is being released by the highly-regarded Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten; it drops in an amazing 12″ format you can find HERE.

This brand new Jetstream Pony is the best way to break your midweek doldrums. The band is made up of members of Trembling Blue Stars (Beth Arzy), The Wedding Present (Shaun Charman) and more; that right there is a pedigree for a certifiable hit. And, with this new gem, I’m on board; the guitars have a jagged fuzzy quality, and the vocals take on a beautiful dream-state that effortlessly floats atop the solid drumwork. The group are set to drop this song on a brand new 7″ for Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten on September 4th!
