It’s been good to have King Tuff back in the game here, and his latest single sees him returning with his old bandmates from Happy Birthday all rocking out together once again. This tune is exactly what Tuffy does best, delivering really classic songwriting circled around pop sensibility, but with just enough attitude and grit to really deliver the personality to make old punks feel cool. For some reason, it reminds me of the final performance by the band in School of Rock, and I’m not a hater, I love that. Think the return to form has us all salivating for Moo, which drops on March 27th via Mup.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve thought about King Tuff, though I’ve always enjoyed his habit of brandishing garage rock with hooks. Today, after a few years off, Tuffy returns with a new record titled Moo, and as one has to do, he’s shared a brand new single/video for you to soak up. When listening through my first few times, I definitely notice some slight changes in his sound; he’s still adhering to the history of garage rock, but in doing so, he’s softened a bit. This song relies more upon a stomp with large hooks smashing about; you’ll also get to hear a little more patience in the vocals, which feels like the culmination of years of growth as a songwriter. Stoked to hear where this record heads; Moo drops on March 27th via Mup Records.

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve run our weekly recap, but last week we covered a ton of ground, so why not give you a chance to see what all we were digging on our end? It was good to see Trouble in Mind with a couple of new releases we’re likely to enjoy from Martin Frawley and Connections. We also got to meet new supergroup from Melbourne, Equal Parts and their debut single. Clicking on this new track from King Tuff, I was sure I knew what I was getting myself into; I figured it’d be a catchy, riff-laden rocker. Alas, you know what happens when you assume things, as King Tuff has instead crafted a brooding number from an artist in search of the unattainable…looking to fill that voice that’s begged him to create. The track predominantly operates on gentle keyboard notes, with a carefully plucked guitar chords creeping into it all. He’s been away for awhile now, and we’re grateful that he’s back with such a moving number.

King Tuff Band PhotoIt hasn’t been too long since King Tuff‘s last record, but he’s back with new jams…and maybe a little bit of a new spin.  This new track starts off almost in a classic rock manner, and then moves into his standard fare.  But, around the 1.40 minute mark, the song turns into a progressive jam moment.  It makes sense reading the new page on Sub Pop, who will be releasing the album.  It talks about battled between God and the Devil, and fire obsessions…yet the heart of it all still are hooks.  Tuff can do whatever he wants, as long as he keeps those hooks.  We’ll find out on September 23rd, when Black Moon Spell hits stores.

So, if I were going to have one complaint about ACL, it would be fairly minor; it would be that the punk rock genre is fairly underrepresented at the fest.  Sure, we have FIDLAR, and maybe Parquet Courts, but by and large, we’ll miss my favorite genre. But, ACL knows how to do things right, as they bring you a killer rock n’ roll show from Wavves over at Antones.  The wily bunch of beach rockers will be accompanied by two of our other favorite acts…Jacuzzi Boys and King Tuff.  It’s going to be a noisy night filled with slamming into your neighbor, spilled beer, and an over all sense of joy.  I suggest you hit this gig up.

Top Albums of 2012: 100-51

It’s really hard to narrow down a list of Top Albums of 2012, especially when you have four contributors with different opinions.  We gave the reins to Nathan.Lankford and Nicole Baumann on this one, since they write the majority of the album reviews, but we all have a little representation within this.  Now, we do realize that our site has specialized tastes, so please realize that these are our OPINIONS.  You’re welcome to disagree, and, in fact, we encourage that process.  Also, we’re doing a Top 100 because so many records came out this year, it wouldn’t be fair to narrow it down.  Not to mention it might lead you to discover some hits you hadn’t heard about yet. Oh, and we don’t really like Frank Ocean or hip-hop…just a personal choice…here’s the first segment.

New Jam from Punks On Mars

As much as I hate to run the same stuff as P4K, I have to continue for Ryan Howe and his project, Punks On Mars.  His newest track encapsulates every inch of what I love about his music, using hooks wrapped around Bolan-esque guitar riffs, all the while traveling off the beaten path just a tad.  It’s in the same vein as my faves King Tuff and Hunx, but in a completely different manner.   If you’re loving this jam, you’ll find more tunes just like it when his new full-length, Bad Expectations, comes out via Zoo Music on October 30th.
