Even after running this site for nearly 15 years now, there’s still just so much music to discover that you’ve got rely upon friends to keep you in the loop now and then. For me, that’s how I heard about Careen, when a friend sent an email encouraging us to listen to this new EP; the email name-checked Unwound, among others, so having just recently seen them, I was like yeah, lets do this! My two cents to offer is that the tune works in two phases; a traditional underground fare then a bit of sonic exploration. I gravitated towards the immediacy of the first phase, as the vocalist in the verses sounds like classic Thurston, up until the emphatic vocal bursts tear through speakers. That back side toys with the same sonic territory, but it’s employing space and limited vocal bits to let the tune completely evolve into its own realm.
