Circling Back to Mikey Demilio

Just a few weeks ago, Mikey Demilio released Billionaires Club, which is a collection of tunes that operate along the various lines of indie rock; there’s anxious numbers, upbeat jams and some spins just illustrate that he’s a young artist working to find his sound. I chose the tune below because it’s got this high-kicking stomp to it, and I absolutely love to get my groove started in that spot. The angular notes open up to this vocal effect that feels like a big wash of emotion’s ready to stomp right on through your door. There’s a vibrance that’s undeniable here, and perhaps loving this song will guide you to the rest of his LP.

Ivy Prepping Traces of You

You likely already heard about Ivy prepping their new album, Traces of You, but I’m a little slow to the game, so I wanted to make sure I gave it the proper love. It’s a fairly subtle tune, with the smokiness of the vocals getting the majority of the focus. But, don’t ignore all the arrangement and nuance in the tune; I like how there’s an acoustic guitar that gets picked up midway through, adding just a touch more texture to the whimsical groove. All that said, the vocal work’s layering also adds texture, like in the latter half where the refrain of “say you won’t” kind of hangs in behind the front, to a mesmerizing effect. Traces of You drops this September via Bar None.

Joshua Powell Releases Skeleton Party

Joshua Powell is dropping his latest record Skeleton Party out into the world today, and I wanted to celebrate that by backing him up with some love for this track, “Sad Boy at the Skeleton Party.” Sure, there’s some heavy riffs in this jam, which tie into Powell’s psychedelic inclinations, but his voice always transports me somewhere else; he reminds me of old school Brendan Benson the way he hits some of those high notes to bridge the rock with the melody. Feel like this hits all the Friday notes, kicking out the heavy riffs and still making things feel like there’s just the faintest hint of pop. If you dig, check out the whole LP; it drops today!
