Pleased to Meet You: Sister Ray Davies

Monday is a day to look back reflectively, then imagine where you’ll go in the week that lies ahead. In today’s case, we’re met by new group from Muscle Shoals, Alabama named Sister Ray Davies; they’re definitely crafting a new sound for the region, picking up on the usage of space and ambiance to create modern guitar pop. This single below has been out for a minute (last October), but now they’ve gone and recorded a live version to accommodate the single. The sound billows, and the physical space of the band members is reflective of the way that the sound floats and flutters, shifting before your ears. Hoping we’ll hear more from them as the year unfolds.

Josh T. Pearson Announces New EP of BBC Tunes

Josh T. Pearson is never far from my mind, oddly. I think I secretly listen to Lift to Experience more times than I’m willing to admit. But, as he’s been doing for quite some time, he’s been doing the solo thing for some time. Today, I’m bringing you a live, slightly extended version of “Woman, When I’ve Raised Hell,” which will feature on Josh’s new BBC 6 Music Session EP. The track originally appeared on Last of the Country Gentleman, but this version feels like the presence of Andy Young (of LTE) just brings out the expansive rock underbelly in Pearson’s work; the middle section is particularly noise and heart-wrenching. Damn, this version is phenomenal. You should also check out Josh’s Straight Hits from earlier this year.
