Last Week’s Jams (10.13 – 10.17)

There was a lot of really great music, and in all likelihood, we’re nearing the end of the yearly cycle, where I expect to kind of see a flutter of singles then the lists will pop up! On our end, we covered a lot of the ATX this week, with new stuff from Jet Cemetery, Don’t Get Lemon, Gus Baldwin and Living Set. There were some new tunes that really rocked me, like Deathcat‘s pop punk masterpiece, not to mention the new Winged Wheel noise pop piece. Even managed to find some room for old favorites like Living Hour, Pia Fraus and Bubblegum Lemonade among the masses! Crank this playlist up, as it starts with a banger from Possible Humans.

Living Set Share We Named It

I love when a group comes alive and completely twists your expectations. We’ve know of Austin’s Living Set for some time, covering Quin Galavis work for nearly over a decade. But, the progressive songwriting on the latest single illustrates just how far his new project is pushing his songwriting (along with the rest of the band!). They’re incorporating a mixture of sounds, blending these slightly motorik grooves with psychedelia and electronica; it reminds me a lot of a more modern twist on what Electrelane and Broadcast doing, or maybe something more recent like The Melenas. Really hoping the band have an album up their sleeve, as you can’t sleep on songs this good for long!

Last Week’s Jams (8.11 – 8.15)

It was a pretty busy week on my end, heading back into the school room and what not, but lots of great music making its way to our ears. Kicking it off with one of my favorite tracks of the year, with the latest single from Sorry, but then moves in to hear our friends I Was a King dabbling in the softer side of power-pop. Plus, the folks at Skep Wax and Slumberland keep pumping out the hits with new music from The Cords and Telephone Numbers. Really excited for you to hear the newest single from Austin’s Living Set too, if you missed it by accident; there’s another Austin act in there too named the Point, you might want to check if you’re into stretching your musical brain! Click play and see what’s up.

Living Set Share Last Wave

We marveled over the recent Living Set single that dropped earlier in the summer, relishing the blend of genres fueled by Quin Galavis’ musical inspiration. Now, they come to us with a new single, which furthers their sonic exploration with a softer vibe and vocals by Annecy Liddell. There’s an electronic backbone that begins the tune, providing us with a more intimate setting, accent by the snappiness of the percussive element. There are certainly rock moments, if you listen to the guitars in the background, but the group are careful with their placement, never letting them overstep until absolutely necessary…and then, they come crashing into the song like the last wave that washes all the beauty away to have us press play and start again!

Last Week’s Jams (6.9 – 6.13)

I might have cut last week short by taking off Friday in its entirety, as I was hanging in New Orleans with my wife and kids…but I’m pretty sure we packed a fair amount of jams into a short four day work week here. It was good to see my old friends in Other Lives back at it with new music, and offering up an orchestral pop number that’s focused and brief. We featured a couple of great premieres from Forever Star and Dancer, so you can circle back and get hitched onto those two bonkers tunes. Plus, good to see Quin Galavis hitting peak form with a new Living Set tune, so dabble all over and you’ll be able to love a little of it all.

Living Set Share The City is Right

Over the last 15+ years of running this here little site, we’ve covered Quin Galavis in a lot of different ways, and been fortunate to do so. He’s one of the rare Austin artists that goes about his business in his own manner, like last year when he released Define Your Time in the form of a book. At the moment, he’s focusing on his new group, Living Set, and their latest single is phenomenal. The tune opens with this beautiful little indie rock riff riding hard, with Quin’s voice working atop; he’s got this little hint of a growl in his delivery that I totally adore. Things start to get really interesting after the 1.20 mark, where the tune embraces a heavy hand and unleashes a wall of noise. But, the group are careful not to entirely pull away from the pop sensibility, with the lightest little backing vocal adding in a textural melody. They go back and forth, back and forth, and every time that punch kicks in on the volume I crank it up a little louder…and I loved the ending fade. Such a great tune, and excited for more to come our way.
