Small Intestines Prep Hide in Time LP

Another day in bloggerville with another single coming from Australia that I’m really enjoying; it’s coming courtesy of Meritorio Records/Lost & Lonesome, too! Small Intestines are a new act on my radar (though w/ members of Chook Race), but the pacing and twisting of this track is sublime. You get a good 35 seconds of nice clean guitar pop before the band bring in the vocals; they’re operating with dual voices overlapping, which, for some reason, is always best executed when its done by the Aussies. While the track might seem sated, it takes on the song title’s mentality, turning from a solid trot into a nice bit of a hurried horse riding gallop; it’s a nice twist that keeps you coming back to press play. They’ll be releasing Hide in Time this September.

Fort Not Release Tell Me Nothing Single

The pending release from Fort Not is high on my list of anticipated albums coming our way in July; I’ve loved their approach to songwriting, taking on all sorts of approaches in their interpretation of guitar pop. Their latest single hits me somewhere in the realm of the Clean and Hunx; it has a distinctive vibe that feels supremely haphazard and DIY, but even in that, you can’t deny the joy that hits you when it comes through your speakers. Playful and carefree, with perfect execution and little touches (see 2:20 mark) that elevate the tune. Depressed for Success is going to hit on July 7th via Meritorio Records.

Spice World Share Video for Time Time Turn Around

I really hope you are not one of those sleeping on Spice World‘s great new LP, There’s No I In Spice World; it’s easily one of my Top 5 Records of this year, and I keep discovering new gems around every corner. One of the album’s briefest tracks, coming in under one minute, just got a really great animated video treatment that I wanted to use to remind you to check out the band’s music. For me, there’s something in the frivolity of this tune that reminds me of some of the earlier stuff from the Clean or perhaps the Vaselines, sharp and playful until the very minute. Fort Not Share Love Will Find You

When we heard the first track from the forthcoming Fort Not LP, you could feel summer approaching in the vibes on “Scum.” Now, with their latest single, it almost feels like the sweltering summer temperatures are surrounding us. There’s still the same sort of off-kilter pop sentimentality, but the mood seems slower, allowing the track to blow across your living room like a gentle breeze from your wall unit AC. You’ll find some garage pop meets psychedelia in here, but mostly feels like hanging your feet into the pond at the edge of the dock. Look for their new LP, Depressed for Success, on Meritorio Records on July 7th.

Fort Not Announce Sophomore LP: Depressed for Success

When the Club is Open first dropped, I was really surprised it didn’t get all the traction that I thought Fort Not deserved; I’m hoping their new LP, Depressed for Success find a little bit more Internet love. One of the reasons I love the band is the way they embrace this light-hearted nature in their songwriting, both in the recording and the lyrical content. I mean, they take aim at “men” throughout the new single, despite being men themselves. But, the recording has its own identifiable charms, as if it was quickly thrown down on a four track as the two tossed back a few beers and regaled one another with stories. Now, just because it’s got that vibe, doesn’t mean you can’t feel the sincerity and the glorious hooks bobbing and weaving their way through the track’s gentle strums. If you like, grab Depressed for Success from Meritorio Records before it’s out on July 7th.

Sumos Share Enemies Single; Surfacing Out Next Week

If you are looking at this month’s release schedule, you should certainly have the drop of Sumos’ Surfacing LP next Friday penciled in to your “things to rock out to” list. With one week to go, they’re sharing the energetic “Enemies,” which to me feels like a huge rush of sugar straight to the body; it’s like chugging a ton of RedBull than running about with your mates while you all don huge grins. The thumping rhythm section here sets the scene, but the vocal performance stretching the melody through every single moment was the surefire charm to get me to turn this one all the way to 11. Surfacing drops next week via Meritorio/Safe Suburban Home.

Sumos Drop New Single: Small Talk

Yesterday we were treating you to the electronic excursion of Manchester’s Orielles, but today, we’re going to the city’s softer pop side with a fresh single from Sumos. When the guitar notes pushed through my speakers at the start, I already began to swoon; this is the brand of indiepop that offers those crisp jangles and soothing vocals. The hook of this song works between the juxtaposition of two guitar styles, with one being sharp and angular while the other works in a more distorted manner, so it all feels sunny with a chance of thunderstorms…but like the weather in Austin, it quickly fades into more sunshine. Strap in, put on your shades and enjoy the warmth of Spring. Sumos will drop Surfacing on May 12th via Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home.

Sumos Announce Surfacing

Funny how I spent the night watching Manchester acts only to come home to a track from another band from the area: Sumos. The group just announced Surfacing, their debut LP for Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home, with this new pop ditty to entice you to give it a listen. For me, this song embodies almost a classic alternative rock feel; it’s got just the faintest hints of noise fuzzing out the edges, but with this core that just seems breezy and euphoric. I was easily hooked by the teasing intro, switching from a lo-fi vocal to something brighter and more emphatic, building in that sweet hook for my ears. If you’re enjoying what you hear, Surfacing is out on May 12th.

Whitney’s Playland Share Sunset Sea Breeze

What? Another day and another track from Meritorio Records? And from San Francisco no less? Whitney’s Playland should be high on everyone’s anticipatory lists, particularly if you’re giving time to this new single. It incorporates some of the fogginess that is omnipresent in that scene at the moment, but there’s this melodic 90s nature to it too. I feel like it’s a San Francisco version of the Breeders, and to be honest, I’m totally on board to get behind that vibe. Sunset Sea Breeze is going to just add to the lore of the Bay Area; it drops on March 17th via Meritorio.

Telephone Numbers Share Weird Sisters

After the masses fell in love with the Ballad of Doug, San Francisco’s Telephone Numbers are back with a brand new 7″, and we’ve got that fresh A-side below for you. I love how huge and classic this new single feels; there’s a level of brightness in the craft here that seems to leap right out of your speakers. For me, it’s all about the vocals, carrying that sunshine beyond and giving off this natural enthusiasm and fervor that makes the future seem so promising. If you’re digging on it, then you can grab it on February 24th from Prefect Records or Meritorio Records!
