Sumos Share Enemies Single; Surfacing Out Next Week

If you are looking at this month’s release schedule, you should certainly have the drop of Sumos’ Surfacing LP next Friday penciled in to your “things to rock out to” list. With one week to go, they’re sharing the energetic “Enemies,” which to me feels like a huge rush of sugar straight to the body; it’s like chugging a ton of RedBull than running about with your mates while you all don huge grins. The thumping rhythm section here sets the scene, but the vocal performance stretching the melody through every single moment was the surefire charm to get me to turn this one all the way to 11. Surfacing drops next week via Meritorio/Safe Suburban Home.

Yesterday we were treating you to the electronic excursion of Manchester’s Orielles, but today, we’re going to the city’s softer pop side with a fresh single from Sumos. When the guitar notes pushed through my speakers at the start, I already began to swoon; this is the brand of indiepop that offers those crisp jangles and soothing vocals. The hook of this song works between the juxtaposition of two guitar styles, with one being sharp and angular while the other works in a more distorted manner, so it all feels sunny with a chance of thunderstorms…but like the weather in Austin, it quickly fades into more sunshine. Strap in, put on your shades and enjoy the warmth of Spring. Sumos will drop Surfacing on May 12th via Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home.

Sumos Announce Surfacing

Funny how I spent the night watching Manchester acts only to come home to a track from another band from the area: Sumos. The group just announced Surfacing, their debut LP for Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home, with this new pop ditty to entice you to give it a listen. For me, this song embodies almost a classic alternative rock feel; it’s got just the faintest hints of noise fuzzing out the edges, but with this core that just seems breezy and euphoric. I was easily hooked by the teasing intro, switching from a lo-fi vocal to something brighter and more emphatic, building in that sweet hook for my ears. If you’re enjoying what you hear, Surfacing is out on May 12th.

Whitney’s Playland Share Sunset Sea Breeze

What? Another day and another track from Meritorio Records? And from San Francisco no less? Whitney’s Playland should be high on everyone’s anticipatory lists, particularly if you’re giving time to this new single. It incorporates some of the fogginess that is omnipresent in that scene at the moment, but there’s this melodic 90s nature to it too. I feel like it’s a San Francisco version of the Breeders, and to be honest, I’m totally on board to get behind that vibe. Sunset Sea Breeze is going to just add to the lore of the Bay Area; it drops on March 17th via Meritorio.

Telephone Numbers Share Weird Sisters

After the masses fell in love with the Ballad of Doug, San Francisco’s Telephone Numbers are back with a brand new 7″, and we’ve got that fresh A-side below for you. I love how huge and classic this new single feels; there’s a level of brightness in the craft here that seems to leap right out of your speakers. For me, it’s all about the vocals, carrying that sunshine beyond and giving off this natural enthusiasm and fervor that makes the future seem so promising. Stream There’s No I In Spice World from Spice World

I know there are tons of great releases spread out through 2023 already, but I’ve already got There’s No I In Spice World penciled into my Top Ten of the year, and it’s only the 3rd week of January. To be fair, I’d put it there on the back of my favorite tune “Mountain Pony 20” alone, which I’m pretty sure I’ve played nearly 1000 times already. The band manage to walk this line between weary pop and energetic jangling pop. “Useless Feeling” offers that more upbeat churn you’ve come to expect from the current crop of Aussie outfits; the chorus is sublime tossing the steady beat into this joyous dual-vocal euphoria. You’ll find more explorative tracks like “Snake Oil” or “What a Pity What a Shame,” but regardless, you’ve got to stick out ’til the end to play “Dying to Go” at least a handful of times with a smile on your face. Spice World‘s new album is out today via Tenth Court/Meritorio.

There’s something in Australia’s water that makes the heartfelt songwriting just tug at your heart strings, something that just feels so utterly human and relatable. Such is the latest track from Spice World, which sounds like this huge lament about the trials of falling in love; it feels pained, but also reflective, learning from the mistakes we all make. The slow accents from the group draw out the song’s power, totally immersing you in this intimate performance that almost feels like voyeurism, to a degree. The band has yet to hit a wrong note, so expect to fall head over heels in love with There’s No I in Spice World, out in January via Tenth Court/Meritorio.

Spice World Share Useless Feeling

If you haven’t boarded the train to Spice World, might beg you to join, as the band seem set on releasing a pretty timeless record at the start of next year. There’s something in the vocals that brings about this striking familiarity, like a friend’s on your porch detailing their latest yarn. It provides this naturalness that’s been drawing me in like some sort of crazy pop tractor beam. Behind those vocals, you get a steady tapping of the feet, like bouncing a baby on your knee as guitar notes flirt with jangling. It all comes together perfectly when you hit that chorus, adding in the backing vocals to maximize the saccharine core that makes this group so endearing. There’s No I in Spice World drops to the world on January 20th via Tenth Court and Meritorio Records.

Model Shop Share Lucky

In just a coupe of weeks, we’ll get to hear the entirety of the new Model Shop LP, but we finally get to hear the opening tune, which certainly sets the tone for the record and the band’s intentions. A thumping drum joins up with an acoustic strum, bringing about a galloping earnestness that kicks off hook-laden pop rock you’ll rush to turn up. They up the ante though, as one hook surely isn’t enough for the average pop fan, so they add in some vocal harmonies, adding both contrast and exuberance; it’s an immediate shot to the listener, letting us all know the group aim to please! Love Interest will be out via Meritorio Records on November 25th.

Model Shop Share Compilation Tape

Forgive us if you’ve already spent a good amount of time with this new Model Shop, as it dropped last week, but I wanted to be sure we gave it a little nod over here as well. While the opening bass line bounds in with this bit of frivolity, the vocals wash that away rather quickly, bringing a steadier charm, something that feels like a mature indiepop croon. There’s a nice little burst too in the chorus, surging through like the KoolAid guy breaking through your stereo with pitcher of joy. There’s so many different plays on the indiepop sound here, it’s easy to find yourself a dozen little ear worms that’ll make your day. Their album Love Interest is out at the end of November courtesy of Meritorio Records.
