Wicketkeeper Share Their Debut LP

I’m so grateful for the reliable labels that never seem to miss for me, you know, like Trouble in Mind or Fire Talk or, as is the case here, Meritorio Records. They just announced the debut LP from London’s Wicketkeeper, and they’ve left behind a trail of pop bread crumbs to tease you along the way. Their sound kind of skitters all over in the tracks they’re currently offering up, from the great wall of guitar pop featured “The Side” to the 90s college yearbook of “Spin;” these are all glorious guitar songs to help you piss of the neighbor next door…or, I mean, to just turn up super loud as you sped down the Autobahn. Shonk is out on October 16th.

Fort Not Drop Another Charmer

I can’t tell you how excited I am to hear the whole of the new Fort Not LP; we’ve already been teased with two delectables, and now we’ve got another. I love how there’s an implied nod to indiepop in the band’s sound, though here, they kind of pull back just a little bit to craft this timelessness you only get in the purest of pop purveyors. For me, it’s the vocals pulling that off; they have this sort of breezy warmth, like basking on the beach as they crash into your face. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that its coming out on one of my favorite labels of the moment, Meritorio Records; they’ll release The Club is Open on September 18th.

Fort Not Announce The Club is Open

Meritorio Records has been one of my favorite labels of the last few years, consisting releasing great indiepop records from all over the world. Their latest signee is Swedish outfit Fort Not; the band have just announced the release of The Club is Open…due in September of this year. This track’s perfect for a Friday; it offers up an immediate bounce and the vocal delivery has the tune feeling awfully familiar (anyone place that?). The duo crafting these songs owe their musical partnership to a tape made by Calvin Johnson, so just imagine Calvin being spun through a sort of indiepop lens. I’m new to this band, so its a pretty solid introduction, if you ask me.

Capitol Announce New 7″

Late last year I was super into Capitol when the Canadian band dropped Dream Noise, and here comes the band around the corner with this striking new single. It opens with this sparkling dream pop, accented by these dancing sharp guitar jangles. Suddenly the space opens up and Josh Kemps solemn vocals enter the picture, blanketing the dreamy ambiance in this indifferent sense of cool; his voice gets a little help by the appearance of ELIO, who really does add an extra melodic charm that playfully trades lines with Kemp. If you’re a fan of the track, be sure to grab the 7″ from Meritorio or Kingfisher Bluez; it’s out on July 29th.

Another Ditty from Go Get Mum

Don’t you dare let the slow tease of the guitars catch you off guard on this new Go Get Mum track, as this might be the pop tune to make today slightly less shitty. Once it kicks on, those guitars start to ring fast and quick; the vocals do their best to keep up with the frantic pace. Those angular notes and the harmonic gang vocals are just too good for you to turn away from; I also kind of feel like there’s hints of the Feelies in this number (probably just me, right?). Their new EP, Ok Now What, is out on Meritorio Records on March 20th. It’s so damn good!

Go Get Mum Announce New EP

What on Earth is in the water over in Australia this week!? I’ve covered Sweet Whirl, Brain Drugs, The Great Divides, RVG…and now we’ve got the announcement of a new EP from Go Get Mum. The band have the muted jangles, akin to work from peers like Dick Diver or the Lucksmiths, but this song for me is all about the vocal work (which I’m assuming is Izzy). There’s this assuredness lurking in the melody, like the voice knows there’s nothing better in the world at this very moment; I love the slight pitch change right at the chorus (“When you go please mop the floor”) as the rest of the band joins in with backing vocals. What a great song to wrap up a great Aussie week…leading to the question and the title of the band’s new EP, Ok Now What…it drops March 20th via Meritorio Records.

Seablite Share Another Song from High Rise Mannequins

Don’t act like we haven’t been hyping up Seablite over the last year or so, and don’t act surprised when I throw another tune your way from the group! I love the latest recording; the band’s trademark fuzz is buried really deep here; still feels like your speakers are broken, but allows for the diamond to come out of the rough. And, boy, does it ever! The vocals come and rise to this sort of crystalline pinnacle, shining at the top of the cymbal crashes and rolling fuzz from beneath. They’re just keeping at the great tunes here. Look for High Rise Mannequins via Meritorio Records and Emotional Response on February 21st.

Girlatones Share Respond to Love

Opening a song with the chorus seems dangerous, unless you’re Girlatones; they’re a fearless pop outfit from Australia with loads of experience in writing hits. Their newest single jumps right in with this bouncing bop; you can’t listen to those first 15 seconds and not be in head over heels with this tune. The verses don’t let you down either, shimmering like some of the best power-pop you’re likely to hear this day, or ever. Oh, and just a little melodic left turn at the 1:10 minute? You didn’t see that coming did you! Horn if You’re Honky already has my favorite tune of the year, so add this to another reason we’ll be pumped for its release by Lost and Lonesome/Meritorio Records on March 20th.

Go Get Mum Share Moving Day

Two things you can trust on a Friday, or any day really: 1) Aussie pop is always going to make you feel better and 2) Meritorio Records is one of the top labels around. Today, I’m fortunate to share the first single from the forthcoming Go Get Mum release. The Melbourne quartet play an understated jangle pop, less jagged and more about churning those melodies that make you dizzy. Their big success comes in the way they combine female and male vocal roles throughout the song; there are times when the song feels like this joyous party where everyone sings along warmly, celebrating life with one another. There’s no way you can’t love this song. Look for the Ok Now What EP on March 20th via Meritorio.

Girlatones Announce Horn if You’re Honky

Aside from the fact that I can’t stop giggling at the title of the new LP from Australia’s Girlatones, I’m totally sold on the opening single they’ve shared with the record announcement. It’s this soft bit of pop, crafted beautifully on the back of a piano, touched up with some light percussion and delicate little arrangements; I loved the crisp guitar notes at the 3 minute mark. Honestly, it kind of reminds me of the slow-core stylings of maybe Bedhead, though spun through a different set of influences; the song sort of builds and builds, peaking as the song draws to a close. Horn if You’re Honky will be out on March 20th via Meritorio and Lost and Lonesome.
