The Year in Indiepop…According to Nathan

As we’re all looking back on the year 2019, I tend to gravitate towards lists with little agenda, other than to shine a light back on the year in the areas I adore. For one, the indiepop scene. Now, there’s always a great big debate about what indie pop is, so for all intents and purposes, I admit that I just don’t care, so the genre’s purists can yell at me later. Now, this may read as a best of, but merely this is the stuff that stuck out in my brain, so if I missed something, I love you and I’m sorry. Honestly, it just gave me a chance to make a fun playlist (2+ hours!) full of hits for all you pop fans.

New Music from Ana & Luis

Today is going to take an international bend, so why not start it out with Spanish outfit Ana & Luis, who just dropped this great new 7″ for our friends over at Meritorio Records. Imagine growing up on 60s folk music, but falling head over heels in love with indiepop; this is what must have occurred to bring us the joyous songs below. On one hand, you get this sort of lightly jangling ballad; the A side is soft and breezy, just sort of drifting through your ears in the most pleasant sense. On the B side you get a little bit more of a bounce, with this sort of wonky gallop working behind these circular jangling guitar notes; I love the subtle twists in the vocals that bubble up in this tune. If you love it, and you do, then jump right over to Meritorio Records and pick it up. Grab that new Sprinters LP while you’re at it!

Sprinters Share Video for Missing

RayRay and I have both been pretty high upon the forthcoming album from Sprinters, but before the band drop Struck Gold this Friday, they wanted to be sure you had one more reason to grab the LP. “Missing” is one of the record’s standouts, fueled by the perfect juxtaposition between too-cool-for-school vocals and enthusiastic guitar fuzz; it all gels so perfectly that in the end, you’ll find they’ve crafted the perfect sentiment in one tight little pop number. The accompanying video is great, especially for US audiences who might not get the chance to catch the Manchester band too often; they’re clearly enjoying playing together here. Fun times and fun pop win every time; you can grab the LP this Friday from Meritorio Records.

Capitol Share Never Been to Paris

High upon my anticipated release list is the forthcoming LP from Capitol; I’ve already talked up a couple of the singles off of Dream Noise…and here we are with a third. This tune definitely stretches the expectations on modern post-punk songs, or maybe songs as a whole; we tend to always gravitate towards quick catharsis. But, you’re not going to get that here, and your’e probably better off for it. The tune naturally has this driving rhythm to it, allowing the drums to really push the song forward, which inevitably lets the guitars fly back and forth across through your speakers. This is the type of track you want to close down a show; you can feel the heaviness of the song, but here, it’s wrapped up like a perfect pop cocoon. The LP is out this Friday via Kingfisher Bluez and Meritorio.

Sprinters Share 3s & 4s

It’s shaping up to be an energetic and fun Friday, so lets fill it with a little bit more upbeat indiepop to take you into the weekend. Sprinters have already shared one track off their forthcoming Struck Gold LP, and here we have the band providing a dreamy dose of energy to the difficult subject of losing a friend. I love the way the guitars seem to have this sort of glimmering sheen to them; it gives a touch of brightness to the song’s dreamier sense of melancholy…it’s that juxtaposition that makes this song so memorable. You’ll be able to grab the LP from the esteemed Meritorio Records on November 15th.

 

Sprinters Announce New Album

Man it’s been a bit over 5 years since I last heard from my musical friend Neil Jarvis. Apparently he’s since ditched his solo career, and now the Manchester based artist is focusing on his new band Sprinters. Having already released a debut LP, the group now has plans to release new album Struck Gold on November 15th via Meritorio Records. Prior to the release, Jarvis just sent over this hot new number called “Ending” to preview the upcoming album. It’s full of jangly guitars with a lovely, washed out yet engaging sound throughout.

 

Cool Sounds Share Hula Hoop

Not too long ago we shared a tune from the forthcoming Cool Sounds LP, More to Enjoy, and the band have another rad tune for you to enjoy. There’s something about this number that seems so timeless, so pure in its pop enthusiasm that I’m sure you’ll love it. For me, it transported me back to the log cabin I lived at in Yellowstone, sitting on the porch drinking a beer with my stereo lightly playing from inside as I stared into the great wilderness. That said, I went back and listen again as I always do, and here I am enjoying this sort of modern funk with a classic rock tinge, bobbing my head thinking of my dad but living in every moment of the present. The album drops on September 20th via Osborne Again/Hotel Motel/Meritorio.

Capitol Share In Ceremony Video

At the moment, two labels I can always look to for solid releases are Meritorio Records and Kingfisherbluez; they’ve teamed up together to release the new LP from Ontario’s Capitol. Honestly, this video’s opening 20 seconds grabbed me; it was as if I was hearing the track from the other room; it was a teaser that opened up into this dreamy jangling guitar line bouncing right into my heart. That guitar continues along, mingling with this slightly hazy vibe that walks the tightrope between dream pop and shoegaze. But, what I have been gravitating towards is the deepness in the vocals; it sounds weird, but they sort of resemble Matt from the National…I wouldn’t expect it to work but it totally does. Doesn’t hurt that the video’s a lyric film disguised as a karaoke scene. Good tunes are hard to come by, so turn to labels you trust; these two great labels will release Dream Noise on October 25th!

Cool Sounds Have More to Enjoy

It hasn’t taken long for Cool Sounds to follow up their excellent Cactus Country with another new LP, More to Enjoy. Today, we’re super glad to share the title track from the new LP, offering up this textural blend between psychedelia and tropicalia; it’s an intoxicating mixture of pop sensation you won’t want to miss. The band almost opens up with this classic rock vibe, harkening back to a late 60s groove, but then begin to weird it up as they build in a nice rhythmic underbelly. You’ll find the vocals have this natural wistfulness, they’re bright and melodic, but also seem to be out there searching…though ultimately finding there’s “nowhere to go.” The new LP will be out this Fall via Osborne Again and Meritorio Records.

Poppel Announce Make Sense

Having formed in 2016, Belgium’s Poppel don’t seem to have slowed down on the writing process; they just released Hit It last year, and already they’re back with another collection of endearing songs. This playful new video comes with the announcement of Make Sense, the band’s second long-player. The video’s personality almost seems to impact the listening experience, with those jangling guitars offering up the appropriate amount of exuberance. Still, stylistically, you can sense a hint of dreaminess oozing through this track, which perhaps finds the band treading that Real Estate territory that makes the kids swoon.
