Looking back again at last week’s great releases, we felt like we couldn’t let Meritorio Records hog all the headlines, so we saved this Slack Times track for you, as nothing is likely to sweeten a ditty from this trio. After a little bit of a lineup change, they’ve really honed in on their craft, taking a walk down the slow-burning that resembles a bit of the fog-pop scene of current San Francisco, or maybe even the nostalgic wayward jangles of Galaxie 500. Honestly, if there’s anything to be upset about, it’s the fact that their new Gone Things EP only has 4 songs; it drops on Friday!

For all the brightness and left-of-the-dial hooks that the new Jim Nothing record is offering you, it’s nice to know that there’s a little bit of pensive melancholy within for you to soak right up…and this is that song. Working mostly around a light buzz from a harmonium, the group offer up a light strum, building up a melodic lather by way of the group’s charming vocal approach here. While there’s a natural sadness to the vibe, there’s still a little bit of mischievousness that gets sprinkled in by way of the lyrical work here, perhaps picking up the spirit of the inner child we all wish to let out. Another peek at what’s on the horizon with Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn, which drops on October 18th via Meritorio Records.

One of the great records I’ve been listening to over the last few weeks is officially out today, and you’ve got to just crank this one up to the max. Best Bets have delivered perhaps “the” hit power-pop record this year, delivering on the promise they delivered with On An Unhistoric Night. They added songwriting credits this go round from band member Joe Sampson (Salad Boys) and he’s infused this immediacy that blasts the hooks into your face the instant you press play. Seriously, if you do anything today, just listen to this record and revel in the pure joy you feel as you continue to turn that knob up to feel the power. Slack Times Announce Gone Things EP

It’s been a couple of years since we fell in love with Carried Away, the last we heard from Alabama’s Slack Times. Alas, we need look to the past no more, as the group have a brand new EP on the way. It’s a brief venture, twirling jangling guitars before our yes, then moving right into a rollicking bit of ups and downs, with the vocals delivered in a manner that feels like lost territory between sweet indiepop and the jangles of the Clean. There’s certainly some mannerisms in the songwriting that all the kids, like us, will love. Gone Things EP is slated for a release on October 11th via Meritorio Records.

While a great deal of Jim Nothing‘s remarkable catalog has felt more introspective, almost like private listening parties for fans of ornate guitar pop. That said, this new single is just a blaster; it sounds huge and anthemic from the get-go, so be sure you crank this one all the way to 11. The guitar set up is huge, almost entering in like some late 70s arena rock, though the band manage to stay close to home with the vocal delivery, pulling strings that send the melody soaring in this wistful manner that circles back to the song’s reflection on past and present memories that make you smile. The new Grey Eyes Grey Lynn LP is out on Meritorio Records on October 18th.

Capitol Share Interior Metropol Single

What a glorious day to open the inbox and see a fresh Capitol tune ready to be shared with the masses. I instantly loved the way this track drove right into the complex realm of noisy pop; you can hear curtains of guitar noise shimmering in the mix, waiting for the thunderous boom of that kick and snare to jump in and add to the textural stamp they’ve crafted. Interestingly, the vocals feel really far back on this number, like they’re hanging behind that curtain, peeking out just to see if we’re paying attention. As the tune progresses, they dive more into the ominous nature, almost allowing the band and the listener to completely lose themselves within the confines of the track itself. They release their new record, Sounds Like a Place on Meritorio this coming November.

As cliche as it might seem, listening to the new single from Jim Nothing will have you feeling wistful, sitting in your bay window and gazing out into the world with a sense of wonderment. Each time the guitars turn over, it’s like they’re churning buttered pop, circularly bring melody to those seeking a bit of soulful replenishment. And, as if you couldn’t just sit there and soak up the musical warmth, there are these touchstone backing harmonies that recall every indiepop act since the beginning of time. There’s no shortage of magic within the confines of any Jim Nothing song, thus we expect Grey Eyes, Grey Lynn to be chock full of pop secrets we’ll carry with us for some time to come; it drops on October 15th via Meritorio Records.

We were ecstatic when we got news that there was a new record on the way from Best Bets this year; the first single was reminiscent of new member Joe’s work in Salad Boys, but this one dives full on into blissed out pop rock. You’ll hear two distinctive guitar lines riding through, one creating this curtain of distortion while the other kicks off in the front of the mix, dancing a little jangling jig. There’s a cooled earnestness on the vocals, almost feeling like you’ve got al little hope left for you in the world. The Hollow Husk of Feeling will pleasantly fall into our laps on September 27th via Meritorio Records.

Capitol Return with Crooked Knees Single

As we continue to push out big bops today, this Capitol tune slides right into our listening rotation. The group have definitely added some matured sounds on their latest single, continuing the growth in their sound. Shimmering guitar notes hang in the distance throughout, raining upon the track as the drumming keeps a steady bounce. That bounce, and the gentle nature of the vocals allow the group to build in a nice dosage of contrast that they’ve been focusing on throughout the creation of this record. Really looking forward to hearing the whole of Sounds Like a Place, their new LP for Meritorio Records.
