Last Week’s Jams (3.17 – 3.21)

Well, after going pretty nonstop for nearly 20 years, RayRay and I had our first real Spring Break, so we took a few days off…please forgive us! That means that today you’re getting a lot of jams coming your way, new and a week old that I couldn’t ignore! But, even with our time off, Ray and I covered almost 20 new tunes…all but one included in our weekly wrap-up playlist to get your day started. There’s new Buffet Lunch, Mamalarky, Sharp Pins and more. If you want to go back and revisit the “writing,” just scroll through the site, but you’re going to have to try to keep up as the tunes are coming fast and heavy at you today!

New Single from MIEN

It’s got to be a great feeling to be working with friends, as is the case with the members of MIEN (all who have heavy psych pedigrees); they seem to sort of let their influences billow and bear fruit when fitting, never staying in one place for too long. This new number is a hypnotic event, that for some reason feels like it’s some underwater Massive Attack move; Alex’s vocals have this quieted constraint, and the effects definitely give that vibe of being just beneath surface water. But, while that natural pulse makes its way, the song eventually erupts with bits of screaming fuzz, hanging out in the far distance as the edges get washed out through your speakers. Just a reminder their new self-titled LP is out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.

Last Week’s Jams (2.17 – 2.21)

Even with Presidents Day offering a slow musical roll, we covered a ton of music last week, at least in our brains. There were some standout tunes from the likes of Triathalon, Now and Scrounge…but also got to hear from one of our old favorites, Pia Fraus. We started to dip our toes back into the SXSW scene, with RayRay grabbing an interview from Gold Star. Then we made sure to rep our friends in Keeled Scales, who had a big week with new Will Johnson and Emily Hines. You’ll get to hear some off the beaten path post-punk from Private Lives and Low Monroe. Speaking of the Low Monroe tune, it’s strange that the two longest tracks on the playlist are both Aussies (the other from Tropical Fuck Storm), and they’re both labeled to have an identical running time. Who knows what that’s about. Press play below.

MIEN Share Empty Sun

Rock n’ roll supergroup MIEN have a new record dropping this Spring via Fuzz Club, and in today’s episode of songs that rock, we get to peek behind the magician’s curtain. As the song opens, it begins with a sampled bit of looped beat work, with Alex Maas (of Black Angels) working in his vocals; the drums begin to unravel, snapping into place as shrieks of guitar fill the background. In their press, the group claims that a great deal of their songs begin just as the aforementioned explanation, then they expand into the final product that we have before us. The story continues to unfold when they release Evil People into the world on April 18th.

Last Week’s Jams (1.20 – 1.24)

Seems like this year so far, it’s been one step forward and two steps back, but feel like I got locked in during this short week, allowing me to get a solid bit of rock n’ roll out from underneath my inbox. We had a lot of Austin stuff to go through…MIEN, Gus Baldwin, Edith Frost, Skloss, Midcard…and maybe we consider Cross Record still! Lots of other new things popped up including the latest from Accessory and the Golden Dregs, which were to of my favorite tracks we go under. Several of the jams are some slow-burns, so take your time and enjoy the rock around you.

MIEN Announce Evil People

I love a good supergroup, especially when its made up acts we already love…and bonus points if it features Austin folks. So, here’s MIEN, which features members of Black Angels, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Elephant Stone and Earlies…all who’ve been regulars here, and now they’ve got a new album, Evil People. This new single is like a proto-psych; it’s filled with these pulsing notes and shattering guitar squalls, yet just as I thought the tune was pigeon-holed, they mix it up and move into different territory after the two minute mark, taking on a melodic moment to let the song breathe and open up. Looking forward to seeing where this album goes; MIIEN comes out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.
