Jasper Byrne and Sonic Share Mirrors

On the first single from their collaborative LP, Jasper Byrne and Sonic were flirting with a mixture of post-punk and house music. On their newest single, you can hear those dance grooves scampering about in the distance; they’re sort of distant, so you feel as if they’re running circles in your mind. That is until you hit that 2 minute mark; the beat drops in fully, taking the shadowy nature and turning it into more of a drum n’ bass boogie that pushes the vocal content aside in favor of locking into this beat-driven groove. They continue to push the limits of where indie rock and electronica meet, so keep your eyes peeled for Mirrors when its dropped on June 21st via Space Recordings.

I don’t alway post 6 minute tracks, but you better believe that when I get behind one that it’s going to rule, just like this new tune from Jasper Byrne + Sonic. Personally, it’s hard to figure out where your focus should go; I was drawn to the dark guitar lines cascading in the far distance, reminiscent of a Robert Smith line that just hangs in some haunting space. However, the steady beat that serves as the glue for the tune keeps your focus, like a gravitational pull that pulls you into its orbit as the guitars and vocals flutter about too. Those vocals are kind of shadowy, more like secret whispers than sung notes, again, adding more texture that ebbs through your speakers. Be on the look out for Mirrors, which drops on June 21st via Space Recordings.

Another Carter Tanton Single from S/T Album

Next week, Carter Tanton will be releasing his new self-titled album over on Western Vinyl Records, and of the singles we’ve shared or heard, this one might be my favorite of the lot. The song’s power is this resonating vocals that seems tethered to the guitar work, so much so that they never seem too far away from one another. Tanton’s vocals are glass-fragile, as if they’re about to shatter the minute they cross through your speakers; you’ve got to love the intimate presentation here, like sitting in on a studio session for one of your favorite songwriters. This song’s all emotion, no frills; it drops with Carter Tanton next Friday!
