Julian Never Announce Everyday is Purgation

It took one strum of the opening guitar line for me to get out my wallet and head over to the Mt. St. Mtn. web site to grab the new Julian Never; it’s the perfect ringing chime, and one that you’d expect me to adore. Then, as there’s some progression and the track adds layers, such as the softened croon of the vocals, I continue to fall further into the song. It’s interesting, as there are some wafting fog pop similarities, though this group’s approach is to lift the pop underbelly in the tune, instantly elevating it into a classic indiepop sound. Everyday is Purgation is shaping up to be a beauty; it drops on February 6th.

Massage Share No North Star

Every so often you come across a tune that seems to encompass the world’s status, and nothing seems as indebted to today as the new single from Massage; the press release calls this a “bittersweet anthem for anyone who’s ever felt adrift,” and I can surely second that feeling, as its difficult to grasp reality at present. But, the brightness of the tune certainly cements the group’s infectiousness, pulling in some textured vocal work throughout that adds this brilliant layer of depth to the rush of ringing guitars. In the end, despite the sense of wandering and restlessness, the tune seems to share an aura of hope, a promise for a brighter moment on the horizon. Here’s to hoping for that, and hoping you grab Coaster from Bobo Integral//MtStMtn on October 10th.

Massage Share Fading Out Single

When Massage announced their forthcoming Coaster LP, they did so with this sort of clean version of Jesus and the Mary Chain, at least in some of the initial press from folks like us. But, while that vibe certainly hangs in the background of their newest tune, there’s definitely something else that’s aching to shine through that weighted backdrop. Like a ray of sunshine, there’s this rolling vibe of euphoria bursting through, akin to some of the mid90s work that was coming overseas during the heyday of Brit pop…and I mean that as an honest compliment. They’re kind of playing off a sort of Sarah Records meets My So Called Life, and I don’t mind that one bit, and in fact, am quite eager to hear how far they push their confidence on Coaster. It drops via Mt. St. Mtn. and Bobo Integral on October 10th.

Massage Return with Coaster

I honestly hadn’t thought about LA’s Massage in quite some time, though I’ll admit that I adored their last LP, Still Life. Well, after a little breathing room, the group have returned with a new record, Coaster, and we’ve got that delicious debut single from the record below. On my first few listens through the track, it reminds me a lot of the late-era Pains of Being Pure at Heart, where the guitars feel secondary in relation to the overall blanket of sound that washes across the room. It’s soft and sweet, though there’s a weight to both the lyrics and the volume, providing a boldness that balances the track perfectly. Such a welcome return; they’ll drop Coaster via Mt St Mtn/Bobo Integral/Prefect on October 9th.

Pleased to Meet You: The Pennys

Okay, so I’ve admittedly met the Pennys before, but just in different acts. The new project is made up of Mike Ramos (Tony Jay/Cindy) and Ray Seraphin aka RE Seraphin; we’ve been covering the two in various ways for years, and it seems impossible to me that the two are just now getting together. Mike’s soft-spoken performance seems the perfect counterbalance to Ray’s penchant for pop, and their first single feels timeless, like you’re all set to just get carried away. Whether it’s the gentle guitar lines or the way Mike and Ray wrap their voices around one another, there’s this undeniable collection that feels like they were meant to write songs together. The Pennys self-titled EP will be out this Spring via Mt. St. Mtn.

System Exclusive Share Can’t Stand 4 It Video

Every time a new track comes out from the next System Exclusive record, it’s hard not to see how big this band would have been had they dropped a bit earlier. Working as a two piece, the pulse and groove of the latest single is quite infectious; the cymbal work and beat should have your toes tapping and your head bobbing as you weave through your day. Their guitar work growls, whilst channeling a dark meandering, akin to driving down the road into Twin Peaks. Ari Blaisdell’s vocal work continues to offer a solid performance with a comparison to Karen O not too far off as a descriptor; that said, Ari feels like a bit of street punk attached, which is a good thing. Their new LP Click will be out via Mt. St. Mtn. and Le Cepe Records on May 17th.

System Exclusive Share Click Video

I’m a huge sucker for an easy hit, but that’s not what you get when you turn on a System Exclusive tune, like their latest, “Click.” Sputtering electronics and crawling vocals bring you into the track, waiting for the guitars to glide underneath the mix, met by drums and an electronic wash. Ari B’s vocal performance remind me of an early Karen O when she felt super dangerous, yet you can’t pull yourself away here. Throughout, the song moves in and out of its organic nature, letting tension build as it plays with the negative space behind Ari’s voice, always rolling in with this pulsing groove. Really stoked on this tune. Click is out on Mt. St. Mtn.and Le Cepe Records on May 17th, with a big Spring tour working through the US.

Happy Like This Video from the Wind-Ups

A little over a month ago, the Wind-Ups dropped their latest LP, Happy Like This…and today we get a video version of the album’s title track. For all intents and purposes, it’s a skate promo, which matches up with the song’s lyrical content…”I’m happy like this.” Musically, you could file it under a mixture between various genres of punk; it’s a little bit gritty in spots, but also manages to sound huge and anthemic like you’d expect from a Spits record. Just goes to show that a little bit of proper noise can go a long way. If you’re interested in hearing more, might we suggest picking up Happy Like This from Mt. St. Mtn.

The Wind Ups Announce Happy Like This

Likely going to make folks irate here, but if you listen to the new tune from The Wind Ups, you get the feeling that the song’s got some lineage with The Ramones. For me, its not just the unabashed banging from start to finish, though I love that being in there. There’s just a bunch of playful stuff they’re including, like simplistic lyrics that play upon single syllables to deliver hooks; they’ve also got handclaps, ramping up the childlike joy of early punk vibes. This song will be on the group’s Happy Like This LP, which drops next week via Mt. St. Mtn.

Seablite Share Hit the Wall Video

Lemon Lights, the brand new LP from San Francisco’s Seablite, is out this Friday, and we’ve had it as one of our most-anticipated releases as we near the end of the musical year. Up until now, the group have offered their perfect blend of dreamy pop-gaze, though they’ve mostly been playing up the dark side, particularly with “Pot of Boiling Water.” All that to say, I think the new single offers a glimpse of the band in complete control of their vision, perhaps even bringing out some of their best tricks to guarantee they leave us with a standout LP. When I first heard it, it kind of reminds me of that sort of acid-house influence creeping into the dream/jangle realm of the current climate; it’s got this secret wash that keeps locked into a playful groove. Jenn Heard’s video plays up to that sensibility, throwing in some light-hearted magic to tie into the whimsical approach on the single. Lemon Lights is a must have; grab a copy from Mt. St. Mtn. on Friday!
