The Clientele Announce I Am Not There Anymore

If I were to be honest here, I admittedly haven’t thought about the Clientele in quite some time. That’s not to say I don’t listen to their record, only that time, and my continuously rapid consumption seem to have passed them by these last few years. But, that being said, there announcement of I Am Not There Anymore, their first LP since 2017, is a welcome bit of news. Interestingly, the band still sounds very much the same as they always have; you can hear it in the ornate guitar lines and vocals. That said, the density in their work seems to be lighter this go round; their inclusion of jazz and bossanova elements seem to give some feathered pop flurries to what’s in store. Looking forward to hear what this all sounds like when it comes together; the new LP is out on July 28th via Merge Records.

Lunar Isles Release Right Way Round LP

I have been enjoying the latest release to come from Lunar Isles, the recording project of David Skimming, a Scot living in South Korea. There’s something in his vocal work throughout the brand new LP that really feels like he’s channeling a bit of that Eastern mysticism; there’s this natural sense of calm, particularly when you zoom in to the opening track on Right Way Round. Those guitar notes and the rhythm section keep this bounce, but you still feel as if there’s a bit of thoughtfulness coursing through the core, something that ultimately feels effortless and centered…the way the whole of this listen comes across. Generifus Readies Rearrangel, Shares Glass House

I feel like it may have been a minute since we got a full release from Spencer Sult’s project, Generifus; it looks like that’s all about to change with the announcement of Rearrangel, a brand new collection of tunes. I’m totally in love with the guitar sound here, particularly in the way the notes seem to sort of climb their way down a steep set of steps on a ladder; it gives the song this sort of pastoral feel, something that almost feels like its been farmed from the grounds of Olympia (Sult’s home). Big fan of this one, so keep an eye out for Rearrangel, out June 2nd via Anything Bagel/Bud Tapes.

Estrella del Sol Announces Figura de Cristal

You all know how much I love Mint Field, having extensively covered the band and caught them when they’ve made it up to Austin, so I’m really excited to hear the new solo project of Estrella del Sol. Today she announces a new solo effot with this drifting bit of ambient pop music. A heavy synth note rings on, with discordant strings and vocal samples hanging thinly in the air; they’re quickly pushed to the background, as if we’ve added another dye to the mixture, with Estrella del Sol’s vocals serving to push the pieces to the background. Slight little guitar twinkles hang in the air while the song fades out via atmospheric notes; it’s quite the calming sensation, like watching sands of drip slowly through an hourglass until there’s nothing left. The new album, Figura de Cristal is out June 30th via Felte Records.

Tough Age Announce Waiting Here + Share Single

Rolling drums immediately introduce you to the latest single from Vancouver’s Tough Age, but don’t get too comfy, as the song quickly evolves from a nod to Aussie casual to classic power pop. A steadied groove is established by the rhythm section, building a nice foundation that allows the vocals to ride the crest created by the jangling guitar notes that hang out in the air. Honestly, when I listen to the way the guitars and vocals mix up, I can’t help but think this is just a prettier version of classic Lemonheads hit “Into Your Arms,” and I don’t mind that one damned bit! The group will be releasing Waiting Here via Bobo Integral on June 16th.

Marika Christine Releases Apricot

What the hell are they funneling into the water in San Francisco?! Marika Christine is another artist from the Bay Area whose craft is totally fascinating. On the surface, Christine’s vocal is the star, as that’s utilized to lift the song up and down, providing movement as it goes. But, that being said, I’m captivated by the various styles that are being brought in and out of the tune; you get little hints of bossanova, little hints of jazz and dabs of electronica, all of which gets spun around a pop centric little circle to enjoy. This tune will be on Marika’s new album, a reminder to push your pop music!

Beach Fossils Return with Don’t Fade Away

While there have been a handful of releases in the interim (jazz album, single, etc), Beach Fossils have been fairly quiet since the release of Somersault in 2017. But, worry no more as the band announce Bunny today, their brand new record for Bayonet. Our first listen has us circling back to the group’s sound, building layer upon layer of synths and swirling guitars; this one had me hooked from those opening lines, and it only gets better as the chorus evolves and you get a little extra guitar focus that adds a beautifully dreamy wash to the song’s middle. Stoked to listen to the whole of Bunny; it drops on June 2nd via Bayonet.

Dippers Announce Clastic Rock + Share Tightening the Tangles

After switching their name up from Thigh Master to Dippers, the band helmed by Matthew Ford have really upped their productivity. An eponymous EP dropped in late last year, but now we’ve got news of a fresh LP, Clastic Rock. With that, we get a slew of sharp guitar work hitting your speakers from the get-go; it’s almost as if they aim to knife through, hitting with such rapidity that things almost feel more buzzsaw than angular. When you hit the chorus, it almost subtly passes you by, as Ford’s vocal maneuvering hides the hints of structural song changes. Plus, the group are about to make their way to the States for a mini-tour and SXSW, so keep your eyes out! If you’re into buying great music, then be sure to grab Clastic Rock from Tenth Court/Goner Records on June 23rd.

Cindy Announce Why Not Now LP

For all the bands that the masses adore, it makes zero sense to me that Cindy isn’t up there in that upper echelon of indie rock. Perhaps they’re too careful or too quiet, but I’ll be damned if I’m not going to continue to immerse myself in everything they do musically. The video below accompanies the news that the band will release Why Not Now on April 14th, which will likely continue to spin at my house throughout the entirety of the year. There’s something about how the band feel so studied in their craft; there’s not a single note that seems out of place, as if they’ve structurally engineered the perfect pop song. It moves slowly, sure, but carries this solemnity in its melody that I find magnetic. If you’ve not been able to indulge in this band, then by all means, stop waiting. Why Not Now will come out via Mt. St. Mtn. and Tough Love Recordings.
