Cameron Sonnier Shares Sunshine

I never really moved on from sweepingly dramatic pop music, which is why the craft of Cameron Sonnier really hits home…that and he’s from Houston, which ain’t too far away. This track drops into the hook zone immediately with the beat working beneath the jangling strum; delivering the first lines of “champagne/cocaine/magazine/I can give you anything you need,” immediately ups the ante, opening the door for this broad melody. In the production you can hear these little washes of atmospheric synths, texturing the world that Cameron’s created. This is our first listen to the work he’s composed for his forthcoming debut, Tunnels, expected to hit later this year.

Ibex Clone Announce All Channels Clear

Gathering members from across Ex-Cult, Nots and Hash Redactor, it seems like Ibex Clone already had a nice formula, at least to appeal to my tastes. Now, with their new album and a brand new single, it’s time to give the band’s work a nice listen. Drawing inspiration from GBV, Meat Puppets and XTC, the band’s aim are to take those pop structures and stretch those sounds into something fresh. You can certainly hear the guitar work playing into the jangling pop scene, though the fleshing out brings in a little bit more heaviness and weight; it all sort of feels like collage work, adding layers and textures from the musical touchstones and building a new piece that stands on its own. Excited to hear where All Channels Clear takes us; it’s out via Goner Records on February 3rd.

Rocky Lorelei Releases A Sculpture in My Hands

At the very tail end of last year, Rocky Lorelei released the beautiful collection titled A Sculpture in My Hands. The project is the work of Rachel Taylor, who you might know from Spinning Coin or Hairband or Slipper, and boy are you in for a treat if you’ll lend me your ears. These 11 tunes are a mixture of introspective ballads and droning pieces of art poetry, all of which share this mixture of pastoral and naturalism, accompanied by the fragility of Taylor’s voice on the recordings. For me, there are certain standout tracks like “Tomorrow is a Star” or “It’s All on My Mind,” but there’s not a single song you’d want to skip over, each offering little intimate recordings that resonate deep within your soul. Personally, I recommend carrying these tunes with you on a nice walk through the park with the sun on your back; it’s available now via a limited cassette on Rehberge Records.

Ben Burroughs Releases Any Day Now

We’ve been gone for a wee bit now, and with that, it’s time to revisit some of the tracks that hit as we were wrapping up 2022. Right as we ended our coverage, Ben Burroughs dropped his latest album, Any Day Now, featuring the remarkable little pop jaunt below. There’s something in the guitar line that feels like galloping through some vast expanse, the sun shining in the distance. I love Burrough’s soft voice, especially when the fuzziness of the pedals gets a little stomp and ramps up the rock n’ roll. So, if you’re looking for a nice crips piece of guitar pop, then seems like you couldn’t find a better place to kick off then right here.

Stream Pterodactyl from Oro Swimming Hour

Back in 2017, this site was filled with notes about Oro Swimming Hour; I loved the band and their various releases that year. But, as happens more often than it should, I hadn’t checked in on them until an email came my way letting me know they had this new LP, Pterodactyl, out in the world. I’ve included the whole thing below, and with all the recent talk about Elephant 6, I encourage you to spend some time connecting the dots between Athens, Georgia and Bristol. They kind of feel like their an amalgam of pop, at all times. You hear little bits of power pop and psychedelia, but then there’s lots of little weird excursions and hidden moments that make it like the most joyous scavenger hunt for discerning music nerds. “Crocodile” and “Cold Tangerina” are my personal favorites at the moment, so find yours below! Martin Frawley Preps the Wannabe + Shares New Single

We hit up that Connections coverage, so the indie sphere gods demanded we only run one post concerning Trouble in Mind per day, thus here I am to talk about the other news they dropped regarding Martin Frawley. We adored Twerps and Martin’s songwriting, not to mention his infectious smile he brought to the stage when he played our SXSW party long ago standing next to a chicken coop (the SXSW glory days!). Well, Martin’s on his own now, working on his next release, the Wannabe, coming out next Summer. In his songwriting, there’s something to the simplicity that shines through, both in the lyrical content and the overall vibe; it’s as if Frawley knew the song’s success was in leaving out frills and just hitting that melodic note from the minute the song set out, riding its charms to the end. Trouble in Mind Records will release the new LP next June, with pre-orders available HERE.

Farewell Horizontal Release New Single + Prep Tales of Woah

Next week we will find the brand new Farewell Horizontal LP in our inbox, but will you? Let’s share this rad new tune to hopefully turn you on to the group’s sound, in hopes you, too, will grab the album. The Melbourne group take aim at the city of Brighton, a place apparently full of arseholes. For me, the story is the shredding guitar work, playing both fuzzy and bouncy, letting the vocals kind of hank in the heavy waters so as to draw out the melody. Behind the heavy ripping sound, you get some cascading guitar solos, punctuating the group’s musicianship, all of that still being tightly wound around the band’s boppnig nature. Next week they’ll drop Tales of Woah.

 

H. Hawkline Shares Milk for Flowers

So this is probably news from yesterday, but I’m indifferent as I’m a huge fan of over the top pop vibes, almost to the point of kitsch…yet still super cool, you know. This new H. Hawkline feels like that to me; there’s something in it that captures the personality of Huw that we’ve witnessed over the last few years, yet in that, there’s something almost theatrical and playful. I think with the help of Cate le Bon‘s production aid, he knows exactly where to hold back, so you still get of that familiarity coming through your speakers. Fun and hip and I’m sold; Milk for Flowers, the new album, comes out next year via Heavenly Recordings.

Zero Percent APR Release Higher and Higher Forever

If you were to ask me which band in Austin did I truly feel like encompassed the old spirit of Austin, I’d definitely have to say Being Dead (I even backed that by putting out an early 7″!). They’re so creative in fact that they’ve created an entirely different brand with which to their various creations, Zero Percent APR. Even when the band seems like they’re fucking with you, or at least toying with your expectations, you’re still totally thrilled by their songwriting. They take little hooks and sugar bumps, then spin them, but they’re always careful not to wear those bits out, deconstructing pieces then building them back so you can have your fix of those little pop nuggets. Lucky for you, there’s a vinyl copy of this floating around today, courtesy of Spared Flesh Records.

En Attendant Ana Announce Principia

Following on the heels of the ATH approved Juillet, French outfit En Attendant Ana announce their third long-player, Principia. With that news, we’ve got the album’s first single (and title track); it gives us a slight departure from previous singles, though deep dives into the band’s catalog illustrates the magic that’s been there all along. Mostly, this song is a drifter of sorts, floating back and forth between your speakers, matched by the slow-motion video footage accompanying the tune; it’s carefully plotted around the melody, letting the song rise towards a climactic moment, which may or may not be out of reach. What’s interesting is the way one decides to interpret the title, both of the album and the tune. In Spanish, it could mean begin or beginning, referencing the fact that it’s a slightly new evolution of the group, or the first track. It could also look to French where it mostly likely means principle, establishing a new way of viewing the band. Either way, we’re hearing something fresh from the group, and that’s never bad thing. Principia is out February 24th via Trouble in Mind.
