Sorry Share Echoes Video

This song from Sorry dropped yesterday and quickly racked up streams on my end. It’s difficult to arrive at what it is that makes me fawn over this song, but for starters, the vocal work, particularly in the rolling of the chorus remind me of Life for Buildings or Love is All; it’s a unique vibe that’s lively and hints at the personal. Musically, the track seems to have two levels, with a brooding bit of indie rock operating as the core, while the arrangements behind it give the track this huge vibes that’ll have you playing it as many times as you can today. This tune is on their new album, Cosplay, out November 7th via Domino.

Juppe Announces Fun! And How to Have It

If you are in the mood for opening your day with some retro-infused pop, might we reintroduce you to Finnish artist Juppe, who just announced a brand new record today. Stylistically, you might find some similarities to acts like Tunde Adebimpe or Blood Orange, playing a brand of pop that’s rooted in deep house grooves and remnants of classic soul. There’s little nuanced guitars and samples that lift the track beyond the basics and turns it into this huge groovy tune that you’re going to want to drop right into your weekend playlist. Fun! And How to Have It is out September 19th via Soliti.

Snooper Go Worldwide

When it rains it pours, and with so much good music dropping today, we wanted to be sure we didn’t forget about Snooper. The group have gained hordes of fans due to their exuberant live shows filled with stage props and more! Their return comes with a blistering piece of punk, thundering through your speakers with that huge growl from the bass. I know the live show and the frantic nature tend to get all the applause, but Blair’s work, particularly in the “As-ASAP” delivery is a reminder that the band wouldn’t have the draw without her sensational delivery bringing in hooks galore. They’ll be dropping Worldwide on October 3rd via Third Man Records.

Goodbye Wudaoku Share Only Questions

Over in Manchester, Goodbye Wudaokou are prepping their sophomore release at the end of the Summer, and what better way to celebrate than by sharing a brand new single. This song’s energy should grab you immediately, letting the snap of the drum drive the rhythm while the guitars angle and jangle their way through the tune’s core. Mat Mills has worked up some great arrangements this go round too, using a slight little synth wash and some backing vocals from his partner Desiree Xu, each little nuance furthering the delights you’ll find lurking for you. Look for the new LP to drop end of August via Subjangle.

Immersion Announce WTF???

Monday inevitably opens you up to all sorts of vibes, but one vibe I’m always ready to get behind is Immersion, the duo of Colin Newman and Malka Spigel. I was fortunate enough to catch them at this year’s SXSW, and their mesmerizing performance elevated my affection. Today, they announce WTF?? with a brand new video and single; it operates in much the same way their previous work has, putting poetry atop carefully curated sonic structures. There’s a it of propulsion in the beat work this go round, but I’m really drawn to the light wave of ambiance that kind of blankets and pulls back on the tune. The duo will release the new LP on their label Swim on September 26th.

Welcome Strawberry Drop Desperate Flower

The ever-evolving work of Welcome Strawberry is always something that lures me into really deep listens; I don’t think they’ve delivered the same packaged sound once, and for that I’m grateful. If you listen to opening track “Fragrance Net” you will almost instantly notice that there’s this clarity to the beginning of the record, working more in a pop realm with an airy feel, as opposed to some of their earlier buzzsaw guitar moments. That said, you can take songs like “Doings of a Wraith” or “Check Scractchers” and you can see that the underlying sentiment to their songwriting is omnipresent, but they’ve repackaged it, keeping their sound fresh and interesting ere they grow stale. All sorts of vibes await those who press play on Desperate Flower; it’s available now courtesy of Cherub Dream Records.

Giant Day Return with Alarm

I was just cranking out Giant Day‘s last record, Glass Narcissus, this past weekend, and here they are, up and returning in less than a year! This new single illustrates the great range their last release had, and looks forward to another collection that blends their various histories into one unique defying sound. The guitar cuts on this are super-angular, chopping right at you as they come through the speakers; they’re bordering on dancy, but they stay just on the edge of the rock element. Emily’s voice is really heavenly here, kind of rising to high pitches then dropping in the mix, sort of like that one legendary band from Athens (not that one, the other one!). Really stoked to hear Alarm, dropping October 10th via Elephant 6.

Bitchin Bajas Announce Inland See

When I first saw the title of the new Bitchin Bajas single, I was certainly intrigued, as the title is one of my favorite Horace Andy tracks. As the quiet opens up and textures are layer, there’s an electronic pulse that feels a bit like that stuttering skank guitar; I will admit that I almost thought it was guitar, forcing me to dive in really deep into the tune. There’s little bits of woodwind floating atop, with synthetic lines zigging and zagging, all of it sort of creating this dense soundscape that feels like a futuristic dub record. If this is any sign of things to come, Inland See will be out on September 26th via Drag City.

Blood Orange Officially Announces Essex Honey

I will own up to the fact that I generally straddle the fence when it comes to Blood Orange. I loved Dev Hynes as a young musician, particularly during his Lightspeed Champion, so some of the musical styles were a bit of an adjustment. That said, you can’t deny his songwriting, his greatest gift for layering hook atop hook in small spaces. For instance, the single below, fresh with the announcement of a new album, trickles then unfurls into this dense modern orchestral piece, filled with the touchstones of everything Hynes has done up until now. You can’t listen to this track and not just marvel at the gifts to arrange this piece and its accompanying parts; you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for Essex Honey, dropping on August 29th via RCA.

Living Hour Announce Internal Drone Infinity

Several years have passed since we’ve heard from Winnipeg’s Living Hour, but a new single tells us we’re in for another great record. They brought their new batch of songs to Melina Duterte of Jay Som, and while I appreciate a good engineer, the magic doesn’t happen without the songwriting. I love how the first minute of this tune seems to kind of offer several stages, starting with a strum then moving to full band and finally exploding into the chorus with a soaring vocal change and ripping solo guitar line. If they can pull all that off in less than a minute what do you think they’ll accomplish on Internal Drone Infinity? The new record is out on October 17th via Keeled Scales/PaperBag/Beloved Records.
