Flowertown Announce Time Trials

You might remember our little Rock N’ Recipes with Karina and Mike of Flowertown, but if not, you need to immediately spend your money on buying the new album from the duo. It’s weird that they announced Time Trials on the same day as the latest Damon and Naomi dropped, as it definitely feels like there’s this lineage with Galaxie 500, or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part. The title track is just ridiculous; it’s too good for you to not listen to it, so you now have a bit of time to rectify that. Then there’s this ghostly haunt for “The Way Back,” like the tune you might here being sung to you by the friendly ghosts of the nearest haunted orphanage. I don’t wanna be the dude that’s like “yo, if your’e not listening to this you’re uncool!” So don’t be like uncool man, go grab the record from Paisley Shirt Records; its out on August 20th!

Belaver Announces Lain Prone

If you didn’t listen to me, and skipped over True Love of Crime, then stop and go back right now and get lost in the brilliant songwriting of Belaver. Or, perhaps you’ll just want to wait a bit, as he’s just announced his follow-up, Lain Prone. This new album draws inspiration from Neil Young and Daniel Johnston, just to name a few. To me, there’s like a strange cross between Eef Barzelay and David Bazan, using clever word play and a really strong sense of intimacy to suck you right in; it’s honestly the kind of tune I think we all wish we could write, relatable and quiet, yet oh so powerful. The accompanying video is rather clever as well, with Belaver’s charms omni-present in the presentation of his work. Lain Prone will drop on October 22nd via Niles City Records.

Enjoying the Enigmatic Foe

Throw around references like the Go-Betweens and the Church, and you can bet your going to catch my attention, which is how The Enigmatic Foe wound up on my radar. The project is the songwriting tour de force from Jared Colinger, enlisting Frank Lenz (Pedro the Lion) and Josh Dooley (Starflyer 59) to flesh out the tunes that would become The Original Plan. While I can certainly hear some of the early nods, particularly in the way the guitars pull in some of the psychedelic, I tend to hear this more of a blend between Britpop and late 90s college rock…and I don’t mean that negatively, as clearly I’m here enjoying the shit out of this tune. Plus, if you listen through, you get to hear a few non-album tracks that didn’t make the final cut. The Original Plan is out this Friday!

Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton Announce New Album

Two of my favorite songwriters have teamed up once again! Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton (Pop Filter) have reunited for another record, which based on the first single, will likely be filled with charming pop numbers you’ll play time and time again. We open here with this jangling piano line, something akin to a classic rock feel with Lachlan narrating the storyline. Quickly, guitars begin to ring a bit more, there’s a swell and suddenly Emma joins in to lift the song’s spiritual connection. The song travels back to another verse/chorus before the rest of their friends join in the fun to “take solace” in the togetherness. They’ve titled the new record Something is Going to Change Tomorrow, Today. What Will You Do? What Will You Say, and its out on October 8th via the always reliable Bobo Integral/Spunk Records/Osborne Again.

The Shivas Announce Feels So Good//Feels So Bad

I wonder how some great bands get overlooked, particularly when they seem built for the enjoyment of the masses. The Shivas are one such band, and they’ve always crafted these hook-laden jams, my personal favorite being “You Make Me Wanna Die.” Today, they announce their new record Feels So Good//Feels So Bad, and do so with this swinging number that out their infectious quality on display. At times, it has this natural swinging psychedelic boogie to it, which is definitely tickles the ears; I think they up the ante by adding the emphasis of the vocals, letting the song sort of soar and pop in all the right places. Of course, the band are masters of choruses, and this one here is the best piece little piece of ear candy you’re going to get to chew on today. Fingers crossed this jam and this record put the band in front of more ears; the new LP is out on September 24th via Tender Loving Empire.

TC Superstar Announce As Seen On TV

If you’ve been living in Austin the last few years, and you love a good show, you’ve hopefully had a chance to catch the pop sensation TC Superstar, who always encourage their live sets to turn into full on dance parties. Well, it’s time for the rest of the world to take note, and hopefully people will catch on now that the group has announced As Seen On TV, their new LP. Listening to the first single from the record, you can hear their influences, falling somewhere between Chromeo and Hot Chip, though I like to think there’s a little more thought in what they’re doing, considering all the songs generally have a choreographed live set up. Bob along, let yourself free, then wait for the new album to drop in September.

Driving New Single From Tennis System

As you are checking out those sweet albums posted by Lankford this weekend, might I suggest you also add this new Tennis System tune to your playlists? The song, “Dizzy”, features this incredibly catchy mix of driving, washed out rock music with the piercing vocals of Matt Taylor. Having been a fan for many years, I can honestly say that this may be some of the best material we have heard from Taylor and his band. Check out now.

Tennis System is also releasing a new album this fall called Autophobia. Pre-orders with tons of other cool merch are live now.

Cold Beat Announce War Garden

Always been a big Hannah Lew fan, particularly when it comes to her work with Cold Beat. Yesterday, word hit the streets that the band would be releasing a new LP, War Garden, and why not throw our hat into the ring with this tune. I love how the musical element has progressed; the synth work still allows for there to be that sort of sterility, that “cold” beat if you will. But, on this, there’s some incredible melody moving beneath, like an undercurrent of nostalgia rippling through the band’s craft. Plus, as is usually the case with Lew, you get a really visually stunning video accompaniment, this one directed by Mimi Pfahler. War Garden is out on September 17th via Like Ltd.

Icarus Phoenix Shares All the Same

Ya’ll all know by now how much I love Drew Daburry’s project, Icarus Phoenix; it’s one of those little secret I keep hoping you all are willing to dip your toes into as you browse our site. When this song opens, you get the traditional Danburry feel, an emotional vocal plain and upfront in the mix. But, what really charmed me on this track was the song’s elevated punch. It hits for the first time just before the 40 second mark, drums dropping in and guitars giving off a little more bravado. Honestly, it reminds me of the best of Jason Lytle, blending a more modern power pop feel with folk inclinations. This tune will appear on the seance Icarus Phoenix release, slated for later this Fall.

New Music from We Were Promised Jetpacks

They’ve been hinting at it for a bit, but the Scottish outfit We Were Promised Jetpacks have officially announced their new record, Enjoy the View. The band have come a long way since dropping one of my all time favorites, “It’s Thunder and Lightning;” they seem to have come out with this sharp optimism in place of their typical bombast. Personally, I love that, as you don’t want to hear a band write the same record time and time again. Plus, Adam Thomspon’s voice will always hold a special place, so listening to him in any fashion immediately feels like home to me. Enjoy the View is out September 10th via Big Scary Monsters.
