New Album + Music from Japancakes

IMG_0001-2It’s been nearly 9 years since we last heard from Japancakes, and there couldn’t be a better way for the band to reintroduce themselves than through this new synth driven track off their new LP. Those who’ve followed the band might notice something slightly different…the inclusion of vocals…the first time the band have used such an approach in 20 years. But, Carrie Clough hits the perfect notes, especially around the 1.43 minute mark; it soars highly before allowing for the electronic pulse to bounce back into your ears. Backing vocals get added to the rear-end of the song, emphasizing the majestic pop the band have left you with on this tune. Their self-titled release will be out on May 6th.

Here Come the High Violets

HighVioletsIMG_2056_JQuigleyThe High Violets are an act you have no business not being aware of, and their return with a new album should remind you just how important it is to have some longevity in a band’s career. Sure, some bands get lucky writing hits off the bat, but on this track, no punches are pulled, delivering the knife to the heart after just 8 seconds. You can’t listen to the fragile beauty of Kaitlyn ni Donovan’s voice without just falling in love. Everyone else in the group supplies perfect songwriting precision, but make sure not to step over the shining star that is the central focus of the tune. Heroes and Halos is the new LP, and it will be released by Saint Marie Records on April 1st.

Digging On Worn-Tin

worntinWhen I pressed play on this Worn-Tin track, I thought this was just another run of the mill guitar driven tune, although I did like the layering of guitars atop one another. But, stick around pass the intro, and get yourself into the lyrical moments; it definitely has something different going on that you mightn’t expect. The way each note is delivered is interesting, and while there’s definite allusions to other acts, I feel like the core of this song’s really unique. His album Thanataphobia just got released recently, and as its come into my radar, it should be on yours too.

New Single from T.O.Y.S

toysSpent a lot of time this weekend looking for hits left of the dial, and was lucky that Oddbox Records had just uploaded one of their newest acts, T.O.Y.S. If you’re looking for something along the line of delectable synth-driven pop music, then this tune’s definitely for you. Electronic notes form the background of the track, pushing it forward whilst the drums keep the beat steady. Of course, the key to a great song is including a nice melodic vocal, which also happens to be present throughout this song. It’s the first taste we get of their new album, Sicks, which is being released by the label on April 22nd in a limited run.

Austin Spotlight: Casual Strangers Go Instrumental

casInstrumental music can take on many forms, but often it undoes itself by forming repetitively and boring listeners…this is not what happens with the new single just released from Casual Strangers. While there’s a trip effect to the track, seemingly intentional if you look at the art work for their new album, there’s this electronic soulful vibe that’s quite successful. It reminds me of the early days of Air, when they were crafting these sultry bits of pop music. The Austin band will be releasing Pink Panther on February 26th, with a party the night before over at Sidewinder. Have fun folks.

Fresh Twin Peaks Tune

twinsBright and early in the morning, and a bright new track from Twin Peaks to kick it off. Listening, it’s got a lot of polish on it, yet you can still hear the energy in the band’s performance, be it the distant yelps and screams or the swagger that comes from the track. I still think the song will turn some people’s heads, as this definitely has a bit more of an adult feeling to it; bands are allowed to grow up, and while it may not be as gritty, it’s definitely good. Their new album, Down in Heaven will be out on May 13th via Grand Jury.

Premiere: Brand New Tiger Waves Album

tigerLong have we loved Tiger Waves, through moves and line-up changes, and even a brief hiatus, I’ve always had their back…so I wanted you all to know that they’re giving away a brand new album of great songs. I asked for a single, and they suggested “Spectacle of You,” but after spending the better part of this morning with the release, it’s too good not to share the whole damn thing. You can grab it for NYOP, but please please please, have a soul. Give the band some cash, a dollar even…it goes a long way towards future recordings and life sustainability. Regardless, stream Tippy Beach below. The album also features local singer Jana Horn of Reservations.

Album Stream: Nathaniel Bellows – The Old Illusions

nathanWhile Austin seems to have evaded the gentlest clutches of Winter, I’ve foundmyself listening to tons of wintry folk tunes, but perhaps none sounds as complete as the new album from Nathaniel Bellows. The Old Illusions is filled with intricate little guitar details, and a voice that haunts the inside of your mind. Listen carefully throughout, as you’re going to find these little bits of accompaniment that make this album wholly enchanting and pretty inescapable. In a landscape where tunes get discarded for the next batch, this is something with which you can spend all day. I’ve been gravitating towards “At Sea” the most during my listening. Look for the album this Friday, January 22nd!

Woods Are Back Already

woodPerhaps it’s a bit early to look at Levitation Fest, with that other big festival right around the corner, but one thing is for sure, Woods will be high on my list of bands to see. They always seem to be at work on something, and this time around they’re turning their psychedelic Cali pop into something a tad bit different. There’s horns and jamming moments, which have been present here and there in the past, but this time around they’ve stripped away some of the pop sensibility in favor of just experimental psych jams. City Sun Eater in the River of Light is their new effort, and it will be interesting to see how this all comes to head on what you can assume will be a cohesive collection of beautiful tracks; it comes out at the beginning of April.

Free Music from Palms on Fire

1501060_787234427980208_1557624226325387883_oWell, we’re only a few days away from that whole 2016 thing, and it’s already looking promising for those on the hunt for great indiepop…namely these two new track from Palms on Fire. Right now, Shelflife is offering the tunes for free on their site, just as a hint as to what you can expect from the band’s new record coming out at the end of January. It’s got that rolling indiepop feel, with just a touch of jangling, a traveling drum beat and a really pleasant female vocal. Just another one of those songs that makes you feel good about being you and about being a fan of music. Enjoy.
