New Music from Great Lakes

GreatLakesCOLOR1Winter is here folks, well, musically speaking. It’s that time of year when slow ballads and folk-laden tunes are coming left and right, but perhaps none more enjoyable than this bit from Great Lakes. The center of this song holds true to modern folk/Americana tropes, but the layering of harmonies and various bits of instrumentation adds more depth to the song itself, creating a dense study in the genre for listeners. The Brooklyn (by way of Athens) will be releasing their 5th album next year; Wild Vision is being put out by Loose Truck Records on January 22nd.

Fresh Single from Great American Canyon Band

12239231_10156232362360068_2759024979203893259_oThe last time we heard from Great American Canyon Band was a few years back when RayRay turned us all onto the act. But, the band have jumped back into the swing with a new single that will feature on their brand new album, coming out in early 2016. It’s the sort of drifting folk stylings that people seem gravitate towards, bringing warm harmonies and filling in the empty spaces with sliding guitar chords. It’s a return to simple structures and perfect execution, which makes the listen all the more enjoyable…so lets be on the lookout for the group in 2016.

Take Notice of New Nada Surf

nadasept05When time looks back on the last twenty years of independent music, I feel sadness knowing that it’s likely that Nada Surf will only be a blip on the radar, if anything. That saddens me to a great extent, especially after they’ve announced a brand new album with the below single. It’s the perfect bit of pop songwriting, just as the group’s always done. Matthew Caws has the perfect voice for pop music; it’s so gentle and warm that it fits every melody within the confines of the song. Ugh. Those guitar tones too? I dare you to find a group writing such great songs…or one that’s done it so well for so long. You Know Who You Are will be out on March 4th via City Slang…it’s going to be a great 2016!

We’re Back, So Is Yndi Halda

yndiAfter a brief little hiatus, we’re trying to play catch up with some of the tunes that came out last week. This one immediately caught my attention, seeing as Yndi Halda hasn’t released an album for some eight years. Well, like us, they’re back with something new, and I love the understated approach taken on this tune. Everything seems equal here, even the vocals seem to sit right inside the main mix of this tune. Still, the band employ a post rock approach, building and building towards a crescendo that never quite comes. encouraging listeners to keep coming back for more. Definitely excited to see what comes our way when the new LP is unleashed in March.

New Music from Beverly

Beverly_Photo_Credit_Trent_McGinnIt’s already time to really wrap up the music of 2015 and look forward to the new year, which means we’ve got to turn our focus to those forthcoming releases for 2016. One of those acts I’m really excited to hear from is Beverly; lo and behold, here’s their new single. Their last album, Careers, had a lot to offer, but there’s definitely some more maturity in this brand new single, displaying a much more polished sound. Some of the punk edge is gone, replaced by a sheen that definitely hits home over at my house. The band’s about to hit the road in the UK, and then they’ll grace our presence at this year’s SXSW…so keep your ears peeled.

Austin Spotlight: Allgood Releases Album

allgoodI’ve really been fascinated by Allgood since I stumbled upon the work a few weeks ago. There’s a lot of easy genre references one could throw out, but I leak to just label it construction pop. Kevin, the man behind the sounds, builds these pop tracks, often layering them with varying levels of warmth, guitars and other added notes. It creates this really broad spectrum of sound, gifting listeners with sonic fulfillment time and time again. The new album is titled Attention!, which might just be a call to people to take note, as there’s something really special going on here. Stream the album below, and grab it HERE.

Groovy New Night Beats Tune

nightNight Beats have always been a band I gravitated towards, musically speaking. I’ve managed to catch their live set on several occasions, and it always seems like they had this heavy darkness that didn’t always leak through. But, it seems like their usage of two-inch tape to record their 3rd LP, Who Sold My Generation, might leave listeners bewitched. I mean, there’s psych bands, and then there’s bands that can really just rock the psychedelia and really bend your brain; these are the types I prefer…and the kind I think of when I hear the group. Look for their new LP to come via Heavenly Recordings on January 29th.

Wolf Girl Sign Up with Oddbox Records

wolfgirlWhy not close out the week with a little bit of noisy indiepop? Wolf Girl registered on my radar last year with their Mama’s Boy EP, but it looks like they’re ready to move on with a new album for Oddbox Records. This week they tossed out a brand new track from the forthcoming release, and it’s nothing short of spectacular. I love the sultry sound of the vocals working against those chugging guitar riffs and simple percussive beats. Seems as good a way as any to wrap up a week; I hope this one gives you the feels.

The Radio Dept. Drop Indiepop Hit

radiodept-repeatedsodomy-560x560Interestingly, the Radio Dept have been rather active, with all signs pointing towards a new release earlier next year. That being said, they’ve dropped a brand new track that won’t appear, yet deserves your attention. It still holds true to some of the group’s trademark sounds, but if you’re asking me, this is their take on an indiepop gem. Subject matter might be a bit grim, but that sets it perfectly against the lighthearted tune the band have left you with. Really, I wish these guys wrote more stuff, indiepop or not, political or not, it’s always great.

New Gem from Post Louis

postlouisPost Louis has been on my radar for a bit, ever since I heard their Uptight EP; I had to go back then to their first one, This Could Be a Bridge. Word’s been passing around this week that the band is in the studio working on their debut LP, and with it they’ve released this delightful new track, “30m.”  Part of the song has this sultry pop side to it, but the other pop has these careful artistic flourishes like a Joan of Arc record.  I’m hoping we hear more of that sort as the band continue to develop their sound, polishing the corners of their tracks. I’ll keep you posted as we hear more, but for now, at least you have this tune.
