skittlesFor a long while now, we’ve been praising the work of Skittle Alley, and they are slowly unleashing early versions of the tracks that will fill up their new LP. It’s light-hearted indiepop, filled with jangling guitar work, precision percussion and a really warm vocal.  These are the kinds of songs that true indiepop fans dream about.  The French act haven’t released much information on their upcoming LP, but the songs they’ve been leaking out are nothing short of superb…get acquainted.

ATX Spotlight: Tamarron Release Dadrock

tammyOkay, don’t let that title mislead you, as Dadrock is the name of the new EP just released by local Austin band, Tamarron, who we’ve raved about before.  And no, it doesn’t sound like dad-rock at all; it only furthers their exploration into the realms of psychedelia.  Your ears should immediately gravitate towards the atmospheric wash, pushed on by a grinding organ that lurks in the background of standout track, “Cinnamon Skin, which I’ve got below.  You can grab your own copy of the band’s EP right HERE, for the NYOP…I suggest a nice donation.

Brand New Royal Headache Tune!

royRoyal Headache is one of my favorite bands, despite having very little output.  Their debut album was a ferocious attack on modern rock n’ roll, hitting hard with high octane guitars over Shogun’s soulful voice.  They’ve just released a brand new single, and I’ll admit, there’s a bit of a difference in the song…to my ears at least.  The pace is a little bit slower, allowing for the voice to shine in the front of the mix; it still has that gritty recording quality to it, which I absolutely love. The Australian group will be releasing their new album, High, on August 21st via their US label, What’s Your Rupture–the same label responsible for bringing you Parquet Courts.

Grave Babies Bring Out New LP

gravesIt’s been a few years since we’ve heard from Seattle’s Grave Babies, but they announced today that they’ll be releasing their new album, Holographic Violence, this summer.  Our first listen to the music from the band has a squall of guitar feeding back through the speakers, eventually unfolding into a dark-toned cascade of the nu-gaze sort.  Interestingly, the vocals match that guitar tone, taking on their own deep qualities, creating this shoegaze/postpunk version of Type O Negative…which isn’t entirely a bad thing (at least in my book).  The album will see a July 24th release date via Hardly Art.

New Music from Gambles

Gambles-Far-From-Your-Arms-EP-COVER-highresThe last time we heard from Gambles he has released his album, Trust, which we fawned over.  Checking in on him the other day, I found that he has quietly been building new songs for us all, though they’re different in sound, showing his growth as a songwriter. His first effort had him working with the power of his voice over a strummed guitar, for the most part.  Now, he seems to have been experimenting, adding extra layers, percussion, etc; it’s an interesting progression, yet just as striking as his earlier work.  Both tunes are said to come out on a new record, which we’ll keep you posted on.

Part Time Readying New Album

ptOne of my favorite things about Part Time is how well the David Loca maneuvers in and out of different genres, yet they’re all connected so the songs have this weird cohesion.  On the first single from the new album, there’s a noted difference in the way the vocals and lyrics are delivered; it’s casual, almost spoken-word, which feels like a new twist for the project.  You’ll still hear chugging guitar chords with a hint of jangling pop sensibility in the background, and it’s all leading to great promise for Virgo’s Maze; that new album will be out May 19th via Burger Records.

Fresh Tune from Jeremy Jay

jeremy-jayI’m always one to rave about Jeremy Jay, and the more music he leaks out from his new projects, the more impressed I am with his growth as a songwriter.  There’s a really crisp quality about his vocal recordings on this new single; it’s something that wasn’t as present on his earliest work, though it’s much appreciated.  You’ll find that the song is this really careful little piece based around minimal guitar and piano lines, providing an intimacy to your listening experience that pulls you into the track emotionally. This single will be featured on Jeremy’s upcoming record, with more details on that boat to follow soon.

y3Your 33 Black Angels is a collective group of musicians rocking it in Brooklyn.  But, while a lot of the collectives generally have a post-rock feel, there seems to be a more pop-centric focus of this outfit, akin to Violens.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they totally flipped it on me though, and brought out something incredibly rad and different; I mean, isn’t that what collectives are for…to push the envelope? We’ll all get to hear exactly what the work of mixed minds have concocted when they release GLAMOUR on May 12th…for now we have this little taste.

Hats Off to Eternal Summers

Eternal SummersOver the last few years, Eternal Summers has become one of those bands that I root for incessantly; I’ll do anything to promote the band and their shows.  I even skipped out on seeing the much-hyped Modest Mouse Fun Fest gig to catch them at the GvsB show late in 2014.  It was their they announced they’d been working on a new album in our town of Austin, so I’ve been salivating since then, awaiting the arrival of such tunes. “Together Alone” definitely fulfills on the promise of the group, featuring tight angling guitar chords, beautiful harmonies and even an emphatic shouted chorus to really kick you in the face. They’ve titled their new album Gold and Stone; it will be released to my collection on June 2nd by Kanine Records.

Turn to Crime Announce Album Details

ttcWhen I first heard this track open, I thought that Turn to Crime was going to offer some high-energy electro rock, but just as that twelfth second rolled around they completely went all J Mascis on me.  The guitar play is distorted, though with more of a modern touch to it, as opposed to a nostalgic alterna vibe. Still, there’s something undeniable in this track, something that grabs you and has you pressing play over and over again.  This bodes well for the new release from the group, Actions, which is seeing a release on April 28th via Mugg & Bopp.
