ATX Spotlight: Abram Shook Announces New Album

Abram ShookWe’ve been behind Abram Shook since his early Great Nostalgic days, and we were especially happy to see his progression with Sun Marquee last year.  It seems that he’s not long to stay in one place, as his newest single continues to show is continually evolving sound; he includes little bits of drum samples in this track, as well as some funky guitar chops.  His ability to operate within varying genres and styles is one of the many reasons his music’s always been so enticing, which makes us even happier he’ll have another album, Landscape Dream, coming our way this year; it’ll see a release via Western Vinyl on May 12th.

Austin Spotlight: Jam the New Sleep Good Album

sleepytimeAs we reported last year, Sleep Good has been hard at work on his new effort, and it’s finally going to see the light of day.  It’s predominantly electronically infused ambient music, but don’t let that lead you in the wrong direction.  Just imagine Black Moth Super Rainbow early on, yet slowed down with subtle touches of accessibility for every listener.  Dream Dealer is the perfect listen to put on while you do work around the house or party in your friends backyard.  There’s so many delicate moments that will draw you in that you won’t want to skip towards the next song.  Here’s to your Friday and drifting through your day.

New Album from In Tall Buildings

driverIt seems like time might have forgotten the work of Erik Hall and his project, In Tall Buildings; it’s been nearly four years since he last released his debut, but this opening track from his forthcoming LP sounds pretty remarkable.  There’s a pulsating opening, laying groundwork for the entry of Hall’s delicate vocals.  This track seemingly builds and builds, yet it always pulls back to offer up a really subtle bit of pop sensibility that’s sure to garner interest from all sorts of listeners.  Look for his new release, Driver, via Western Vinyl on February 17th.

Rejoice with New Music from Twerps

twerpsI’m going out on a limb to say I was the first person to write about the Twerps in the US…thanks to a heads up from their great label Chapter Music.  But, it seems like the rest of the world is catching on, deservedly so.  The band have just announced that they’ll be working with Merge Records in the US (as well as Chapter in Australia) to release their brand new album, Range Anxiety.  You’ll be able to hear the record in early 2015, but I want to take note of how upbeat the group sounds on this debut single.  It’s not like they were ever bummed out, but this new glimpse offers an uplifting tone to fans.  You can also check out THIS VIDEO to see how they tie it all together.  So happy they’re going to have new tunes for us!

Softened Tune from Deptford Goth

dgFeeling sort of schizophrenic today, musically speaking, so why not add this melancholy tune from Deptford Goth to your listening mix?  The song features a soft piano backbone with a faint hint of percussion to touch things up.  There’s some distant backing shouts/chants in the background, though  Daniel’s voice is really what sucks you into this track.  I’m a sucker for a great bit of traditional pop songwriting, and this is right up that alley.  Keep your ears peeled for the November 4th release of his album, Songs.

Austin Spotlight: New Album from John Wesley Coleman (+Release Shows)

johnnyIf you haven’t caught a John Wesley Coleman gig living in Austin, then perhaps you’re doing it all wrong.  Or, maybe you just caught The Golden Boys instead.  Either way, he’s one of my favorite local songwriters, unfortunately dubbed by many as a trashcan-troubadour. On his new single there’s a really striking fragility to his vocal performance, which I haven’t heard from him before…though I quite like it.  The rest of the track is filled with his trademark guitar stylings and blasts from his companion horn section.  You’ll be able to grab this new song on a 7″ from Urinal Cake Records soon, and catch him at Trailer Space on Thursday or Hotel Vegas on Saturday night where he’ll also have a new record for you too! Yeah Wes.

New Music from Eric D Johnson

edjWe loved the work of Fruit Bats, so it only makes sense that we’re following closely the path of the band’s Eric D. Johnson.  Press release says that he acknowledges that these are not the happy songs that most people might associate with his writing, but I still find that there’s a brightness to what he’s creating.  I love the way his voice rises up, meeting the notes he’s crafted at each turn; it’s one of the staples of his songs that we’ve adored for some time. He’ll release a new album under the EDJ moniker on Easy Sound on August 5th.

Austin Spotlight: Whalers Release New Album

whalersWe’ve written about Whalers many a times on these here pages, and we’re excited to let you know that the band has quietly released their new album, Submarine Sun.  The group has previously released singles “Battleships” and “Bon Viviant,” but I wanted to share with you one of my favorite tracks from the recent release. On this tune, you see the band work on expanding their sound, opening the song with a soft vocal layer over some precision drumming and a pulsing beat. As the song moves forward, the tune opens up even more, with accented guitar pieces and an emphatic vocal performance.  Definitely spend some of your time today listening through all the tracks; you’ll regret it if you don’t.

 

 

Beautifully Subdued Track from Prince of Assyria

princeAs we here at ATH aim to recover from extensive debauchery, I figured I’d offer you this mellow tune to help us all ease back into our daily lives.  This tune comes to you from Prince of Assyria, who has been quietly making waves in Sweden.  On this track, there’s a light guitar strum, accompanied by a faint violin accent and female vocals.  You’ll be able to hear more tracks of this sort from the artist on April 11th when he releases Changing Places, his second album, on Soliti Music.  Seems like a perfectly way to start out what will surely be a dragging Monday morning.

New Track from DZ Deathrays

dzAustralia’s DZ Deathrays are hard at work trying to wrap up the recording of their next full-lenght, but in the mean time, they’ve provided us all with a nice little peak at what we’re likely to hear.  Ringing guitar works really well here, with layered vocals doing a perfect job providing a fairly blissful touch to the song itself.  Bloodstreams, their last album, made huge waves, so we can expect them to gain more steam as their sound crosses the great pond, landing them in our speakers.  We’ll keep you posted on the release date, but experts are looking at a February release.
