Noisy New Punk Jam from Mind Spiders

Last year I raved about the self-titled debut from Mind Spiders, so I was really excited when I found out the band would already be releasing their new album Meltdown almost less than a year later.  Said record is set to come out on February 21st via Dirtnap Records, and you’ll definitely find some differences this go around, at least if this first preview is any indicator.  Their last effort was pretty straight forward rock n’ roll, but here you’ll hear a little bit of a scuzzier performance from the band, reminiscent of Blank Dogs.  It’s coated in some sort of dingy wash, yet that’s not going to take away from the fact that the band still know how to kick out the jams.  For me, it’s Jay Reatard meets Mike Sniper, which equals awesomeness to the max!

Bouncy Pop Ditty from Standard Fare

Ready for your new favorite band? It’ll only take you a few seconds to listen to the jangly line from this track from Standard Fare before you fall in love.  The Sheffield trio is set to release their Out of Sight, Out of Town for Melodic on January 24th, and the minute I played this song, I got hooked.  Emma Cooper takes the lead role on this number, and it’s her performance that lends a steadying hand to the catchy tune.  If you’re in the market for bright, infectious indie pop today, then you came to precisely the right spot; you’re not going to hear anything better today.

Popular New Song from White Rabbits

When It’s Frightening came out in 2009 we were all over it, especially with the magic that was “Percussion Gun,” one of our favorite tracks from that year.  Today, news hits the street that White Rabbits are going to release their new album Milk Famous on March 6th via TBD Records, the label that brought you Other Lives.  This opening single definitely sees the band experimenting with negative space, offering up a more subdued bit of groove as opposed to the more boot stomping moves from their last record.  Still, that trickling piano and shattering guitar kicking it in the background of the track show the band’s got something new up their sleeve, so we should definitely be on the lookout for this record.

New Tunes from La Sera

Within minutes of receiving this email, this track blew up all over the Internet; everyone is posting it.  This is a testament to the excitement surrounding the new release from La Sera, which will be hitting the streets on March 24th via the good people over at Hardly Art.  I really like the juxtaposition of vocals and music on this track; it’s got this Misfits/Spits guitar riff pushing you on through, but we all know Katy Goodman’s vocals come with that girl-pop sugar–we all know we can’t live without it.  It’s a nice little twist to what’s become a moderately watered down genre, so my hopes are high for this record, Sees the Light.

Amazing New Gem from Nada Surf

While a great many of us probably think of Nada Surf as the band that wrote “Popular,” there’s a great history of the band who’ve put out effortless pop albums that never let you down.  Personally, I adore their record Let Go, but I’ve always played out every release they’ve offered.  Now, the band returns with The Stars are Indifferent to Astronomy, which comes out January 24th via Barsuk.  One of the special things about the following track is the way the song quietly erupts after seemingly coming to slow halt, demonstrating that the band still has complete control of their pop genius.  If you’ve ignored the group, do yourself a favor and revisit their catalog, but only after you listen to this great little number.

New Track from Frankie Rose

Several years ago, the Vivian Girls re-introduced us to our love of girl-pop, and since that time, numerous acts have been spawned or seen on the side.  Perhaps none has caught my ear as much as Frankie Rose, who pretty much gets tied into the lot of featured girl-groups.  She’s got a new record coming out on Slumberland Records on February 21 (a single comes out on the 17th of January) titled Interstellar.  From this first track, there’s a huge wall of sound surrounding her dreamy vocals, which come off cool and casual.  Definitely sounds like Frankie could have another hit on her hands here.

New Music from Dinowalrus

As we slowly move into 2012, there’s a lot of interesting music beginning to trickle out our way.  One of the first acts to catch my attention is Dinowalrus, a band with some ties to Titus Andronicus — just don’t expect to hear the same post-rock storytelling.  This track begins with a bit of a dreamy state, and while the vocals maintain that effect, you’ll get a bit more of a trance-induced swing pushed on by cascading guitar lines.  If, like me, you’re digging what you hear, you can get the band’s newest effort, Best Behavior on March 6th via Old Flame Records.

Brand New Gem from Cats on Fire

I’ve waited since 2009 for Cats on Fire to introduce me to brand new music.  They’re set to return in 2012 with a brand new effort full of new tunes on Soliti Music sometime this coming Spring.  My first listen to this brand new track, “My Sense of Pride,” reveals everything that I’ve waited for over the last few years: it’s got elements of light twee, but in a casual way where it avoids the realm of nostalgic kitsch.  There’s also a bit of solemnity to the track, which for those who’ve listened closely, has always lurked quietly beneath the surface.  I’m going to come out and say it though; this is possibly one of the best bands around, so take heed and enjoy this new offering.

New Old Music from Malcolm Middleton

Long have I adored the work of Malcolm Middleton, ever since he worked in Arab Strap.  Luckily, since it’s raining, I opted to pick up his new LP, which is basically his first album of recordings that never saw the light of day until now.  He’s been really busy lately, or so it seems on his site, so I’m happy to pick up A Quarter Past Shite.  It’s mostly Malcolm and his guitar, with a real melancholy bent on the lyrical matter.  Apparently, the sadness of the songs kept him from publishing it until now, but I’m glad he did, as it makes for a great listen on this dreary day here in Austin.

Brand New Jam from Literature!

If you’ve been following this year, you’ve probably heard me hype up local Austin band, Literature.  Well, prepare yourself for a whole lot more, as the band’s about to release a phenomenal record for you all to enjoy.  The record is titled Arab Spring, and pretty much every song is an absolute gem.  The band’s been kind enough to let us pick our favorite jam, which, believe you me, has been a difficult task this weekend.  I chose, “Grifted,” as there’s a bit of elegant charm, and immeasurable catchiness to go along.  This song should definitely demonstrate why I’m so excited about this band! The record’s so solid that I’m sure someone will pick it up once the band self-releases the album here in the next few weeks, and if they don’t, fuck it, I’ll do it.
