Dean Wareham Shares That’s the Price of Loving Me

Around my house, there’s been a lot of hubbub over Dean Wareham; my wife and I are fighting over who gets to watch the kids while one of us goes and watches Dean do a Galaxie 500 set. But, today, let’s turn our attention to his current endeavor, his new solo LP. While Wareham’s voice always has power over me, the drums on this single are what I keep shuffling back to; they’re offering up a simple gallop, and in that, they also seem to throw in a little bit of a tropicalia influence. Textured string arrangements further the depth, with the guitar working in between the vocal stabs, with the whole of the song taking on this ethereal plot twist that you’ll adore. That’s the Price of Loving Me is out on March 28th via Carpark.

Quinquis Announces EOR

Just the other evening I was lamenting the absence of cinematic electronica. Sure, I was totally talking about Holodeck Records, but when this Quinquis track arrived, it completely scratched that musical itch. Opening with a beat that sounds like a stuttering heart, the song begins to pulse and blossom beneath Emilie Quinquis angelic tones; we get to hang here, magically suspended in the space that’s left open in the song’s craft. That said, there’s a plot twist, as we’re then introduced to South African artist Desire Marea, who approaches the track in Zulu, capturing this essence of a sort of light that or wave that moves from a center out, spreading across the world. When the two wrap their voices around one another, it’s quite the musical spectacle, and all of it accompanied by the impressive video. This tune kicks off EOR, the new Quinquis LP, dropping on May 9th via Mute.

Shermy Prep Friends 2020

For the next four years we’ll all be harping on the continuous shit show we’re stuck in, so we’ll turn to our music for promise, for hope. When I played this new Shermy track, there’s this blossoming buoyancy to it that I naturally loved; it feels like I’m bounding down the streets with my arms interlocked with my closest friends. Maybe that’s where the title of the forthcoming Friends 2020 LP comes from, as the joy of these light jangles is sure to draw you and your friends closer, tossing down some sort of group jig at your next dinner party. Thanks to Shermy for the glimmer of sun; this new LP will hit on February 14th via Lost Sound Tapes.

Brand New Cross Record

We’ve heard whispers of a new Cross Record album coming our way, as Emily shared some images that apparently are stills from the current video. This new single comes with the news of Crush Me, the newest album from the former Austinite’s project. There seem to be a lot of ups and downs in the finishing of the record, with major label interest coming then fading; accompaniment showed up, then disappeared, all of it leading to a sentiment of loss and confusion that surely bleeds through the notes on this album…though that clearly shouldn’t be a representation of the musical quality that we hear here; it’s the same striking work that has always kept the artist revered on our pages. Crush Me will be out on March 21st via Ba Da Bing Records.

Lake Announce Bucolic Gone LP

Having mostly been quiet since 2020, Lake aim to make a big splash with their return in 2025! Today they bring us a new single and the announcement of Bucolic Gone, a new long-player for Don Giovanni Records. Everything they accomplish in this 4 minute tune revolves around the perfect balance of space and the vocals. I love how the group seems to employ layer upon layer of texture, though in that, it also feels wide-open, like they could continue to fill their musical bucket with more sounds…and they do, splashing fuzz and riffs throughout in the distance. Still, it only succeeds because of the gentle nature of the voice, like a drifting feather that just hangs on the edges of the sun, reflected in both the song’s title and the visuals below. We’re sure to hear more from the group before the album drops this Spring.

Dean Wareham Announces That’s the Price of Loving Me

Just as I was sliding through my emails, I remembered that today is a day to celebrate, as Dean Wareham announces That’s the Price of Loving Me, his newest solo outing. This album’s production was handled by Kramer, which is the first time the two have worked together in over 30 years, at least in the recording capacity. Still, Dean’s approach is a far cry from the early days of Galaxie 500, taking on more of a psychedelic pop note this go round; the vocals almost feel like blossoming flowers, blooming behind the steady rock of the drums, all of it layered with depth by Gabe Noel’s weeping cello work. Carpark will release That’s the Price of Loving Me on March 28th.

Hamilton Leithauser Announces New Album

Look, the ATH crew has been at times accused of borderline obsession syndrome with Hamilton Leithauser both as a solo artist and as front man for The Walkmen. Did we track him down once backstage to buy him a beer? Maybe. Did I go all the way to Rhode Island for the first reunion show? Ummm yeah. Something about the music has always hit a personal note for this team. My doting aside, Hammy has been dropping hints of new music recently, which culminated in a new album announcement today along with this new single “Knockin’ Heart.” I cannot wait to hear more.

Hamilton’s new album is entitled This Side of the Island and will be out on March 7th. Pre-orders are live now.

Club 8 Release New Album

I had a sneaking suspicion that this was coming: Club 8 release A Year with Club 8 today! We’ve been here all along the way, watching the band drop catchy single after pop gem, much like their fellow Swedes Red Sleeping Beauty. Today, they drop their final installment by putting it all together. You’ll find energetic bouncers like “Free Falling” or “Something’s Wrong in My Head,” but you can also uncover some more pensive pieces like “Closer to You” or “Nervous at Heart,” both which carry a gentle smoky pop engagement that is absolutely delightful. You’ve hopefully been listening all along, but if not, be sure to get yourself into the joy of the world by listening to A Year with Club 8.

Frog Shares Christmas Tune

When Frog released their 2023 Grog LP, folks lined up to praise the band and their work, deservedly so. Now, they’ve teased a new album, but offered up a hold-over holiday tune to keep your ears warm during this Winter season. This tune has a take that’s not too similar to the traditional “Night Before Christmas” story, though told from the oddball perspective, which only makes sense hearing Frog as an outsider outfit. They continue to layer the song with twinkling piano notes, building it up with a snapping drum beat and these vocals that seem almost instrumental in their presence. A nice way to look forward to the New Year.

Stream Cistern’s New Standard EP

Over the last month or so, I’ve definitely been on board the Cistern hype train, perhaps even throwing the wood on the fire. Today, you can stream the entirety of New Standard, and in doing so, you’ll be filled with this angular punk energy that should carry some enthusiasm into your afternoon. The catchy enthusiasm of “Pendulum” reminds me of the Futureheads, stabbing guitar energy that makes your feet stomp on the club floors. For me, “Crisis” is one of my favorite jams of the year, and I keep cranking it up, much to the dismay of my 6th period class, who are trying to finalize their projects. File it somewhere between Ought and Omni, and most certainly under awesome!
