Ceylon Sailor Share Lines Seem Severed

Now that we’re awake over here, it’s time to crank out the jams, like this new single from New York’s Ceylon Sailor. The band, the project of KM Sigel, is heavily influenced by the sound of early Merge Records, driven by huge hooks and energetic rock vibes; you can definitely hear elements of nods to a slew of 90s rock, namely Superchunk. If you’re looking for earnestness, it’s here in heaps, carrying this huge wall of pop promise, that soars as soon as you hit that chorus; there’s a softness there though too, which is one of the reasons I’ve been so drawn to it, as I’m certainly a pop sucker! Crank it up!

Red Sleeping Beauty Share August Single

Every month we get a new track from Red Sleeping Beauty, and you know what, I might have taken that for granted, as I didn’t slide into their August single until the 3rd of the month! So, here I am aiming to rectify my error by sharing that new single with you today. This one’s a slow electro burn, working with a synthetic pulse that rides beneath the surface; the core vocals here lead to this track’s international flavor, offering three distinctive language, although I can only understand the Spanish and English. As always, they take all their tricks and weave it into this basket of sugary treats that keeps us coming back month after month to celebrate the band’s Song a Month Single Series.

Tape/Off Share Paris, Texas Queensland Single

Wanted to start the morning off right, and what better way than to drop in this great new single from Brisbane’s Tape/Off. As the song begins, you can soak up that sort of lackadaisical brand of ramshackle pop, the sort the Aussie region holds in high regards. That part was kicking ass, but then they throw in a plot twist, taking more of a post-hardcore lean into the latter half, even giving just the faintest vocal growl to build the momentary angst. In retrospect, the song’s all about the way it builds that tension, playfully letting you settle into the vibe until it unleashes a big burst of enthusiasm to wrap it all up!

Capitol Return with Crooked Knees Single

As we continue to push out big bops today, this Capitol tune slides right into our listening rotation. The group have definitely added some matured sounds on their latest single, continuing the growth in their sound. Shimmering guitar notes hang in the distance throughout, raining upon the track as the drumming keeps a steady bounce. That bounce, and the gentle nature of the vocals allow the group to build in a nice dosage of contrast that they’ve been focusing on throughout the creation of this record. Really looking forward to hearing the whole of Sounds Like a Place, their new LP for Meritorio Records.

Conflict at Serenity Pools Share Summer Garage

Califnoria’s Conflict at Serenity Pool are finishing up the final touches to a new record slated for a Fall release, and this gives us a nice little peek into their songwriting this go round. Based on the information we received, they’re turning the focus on matching up the lyrical and the sonic, making sure that the listener feels the emotion as much as they’re impacted by the content. There’s some nice bits of musical brushstrokes working here, like the way the vocals overlap to build depth in the recording or the soft wash of synths that eventually make their way to the front of the mix. Look for a new record and more news real soon!

Young Scum Announce Lighter Blue + Share Title Track

I’ll admit, I had Chime School’s next LP in the running for best jangle pop record of the year, but, they better be looking over their shoulder, as Young Scum are right on their heels with today’s album announcement and title track! While they’ve been out of the game, so to speak since their debut in 2018, it seems that they’ve just been honing their skills, sharpening their jangles and savoring melodies; they are ready to unleash that here, and they do, with a spritely number that shines bright like the North Star, guiding you to the perfect collection of pop songs. Plus, they must have read my mind, as they employ these “woah woah woahs,” channeling every bit of joy they could muster into a heart-warming moment. The reflective yearning in the melody and lyrical content matches up perfectly too, making old pop fans like myself giddy at the promise of the future. Lighter Blue is out September 8th via Pretty Olivia Records.

Abbey Blackwell Shares Next Time Single

With a pedigree as a bass-player extraordinaire for acts like Alvvays and Cassandra Jenkins, it sounds like its time for Abbey Blackwell to make her own name shine, especially if she’s writing songs like the one you’ll hear below. The song tip-toes through your room, with Blackwell’s vocals just a step ahead of spoken word, clinging tightly to a bit of fragility. Unfolding through the first chorus run, the tune begins to take on a touch more flare, throwing in a slightly heavier strum and some skittering solo lines that punctuate the tune, giving it this presence that has me wrapped around its finger. Excited to hear more from Big Big Motion, out September 13th.

Deary Share Selene Single

I only recently got into Deary, but with a new single, they’re sound continues to mesmerize, working on the softer side of dream pop. When you listen to their newest single (mastered by Slowdive’s Simon Scott), you’ll find that wall of ambient noise lurking, but it sort of feels like it’s hanging in the shadows, careful not to show too much of itself. That suits the vocals perfectly, as they too hide, layering in melody where it feels more textural, which is one of my favorite moves in the genre. Towards the latter half of the song, a keyboard line begins to emerge, allowing the song to build towards a climactic pop crescendo that continues to have the group bustling in my listening rotation.

The Softies Share Tiny Flame

Today is chock full of absolutely great songs, but let’s not forget that our best bit of pop might be brewing with this new single from The Softies. They haven’t seemed to skip a beat from their heyday, perfecting their songwriting as they completely dive into shared vocals and unified guitar work. And, considering their one of the great pop bands, period, they draw from the classic trope of detailing a lost love to the listener, a timeless nod to their timeless sound. Their return continues to bud with the promise of great pop for tomorrow; they’ll released The Bed I Made on August 23rd via Father Daughter Records/Lost Sound Tapes.

Nap Eyes Announce The Neon Gate

We’ve heard (and been charmed) from a lot of the new Nap Eyes album, as they’ve been steadily putting singles out into the ether, but today they bring the official announcement of The Neon Gate. Nigel Chapman’s voice is like a light and I’m some moth, drawing me towards it again and again. But, while his gifted lyricism and pleasing voice are a big draw, I love the production on this new single, a reminder that orchestral folk pop doesn’t have to sound cliche. Light synths open the song, almost like a heavenly string arrangement, and then comes the strum, whistling through your ear like the breeze across a prairie grass. Then a subtle sampled beat comes into play as another guitar line begins to work in contrast, and everything just builds and builds. BUT! That build isn’t obvious, it’s light and careful not to pop its head out, charming from just behind Chapman’s voice. What a wonderful tune, and the promise that The Neon Gate is going to be super special; it drops October 18th via Paradise of Bachelors.
