I continue to be impressed with the clever indie rock stylings of Chicago’s Friko; they seem like shapeshifters, as there hasn’t been a single song that’s sounded quite like the one before. So, here we are again, with the band bringing a sound that certainly begins to feel like the best track Arcade Fire never wrote, albeit done with more earnestness and sincerity this go round. Plus, as you hit the 2 minute mark, the song begins to stomp on your soul, punching through with sheer exuberance; it’s insanely swoon-worthy, continuing the group’s consistent push towards Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here…out this Friday!

Kelley Stoltz Returns with Reni’s Car + New LP

Sadly, it sometimes we take our greatest artists for granted, and such is the life I fear for Kelley Stoltz. The songwriter has definitely been lauded, and maybe the fault is mine, so every time I hear new stuff, I circle back and jam out to Stoltz for a few days; I mean, honestly, the dude’s never written a bad tune, that I’ve heard. Hopefully we’re all hope on that train as we await La Fleur, a brand new LP from Kelley, dropping this Summer. For my two cents, there’s something in the songwriting that feels like a mixture between Glenn Donaldson and Robert Pollard, though with a bit more of a psychedelic bend on the guitar vibes. Plus, the song got a cool backstory, as he recants a tale of spending the day in the car of Stone Roses drummer Reni. Sounds like another classic jam if you’re asking me…La Fleur is out on June 7th via Dandy Boy Records/Agitated Records.

Force Model Share Drowning Flower’s Pot

After a blistering first single, I was excited to hear where Force Model would go with their latest lead-in to Found Camera, and boy, is it a welcome surprise. This one feels like the band have almost looked at some of blending of sounds that came out of DC during the late 90s. There’s an absolute dark-tinged build that runs through the song, particularly when it gets punctuated by discordant riffs running amok in the tune. Still, each time I listen though, I get drawn into the more melodic nature, even when the vocals seem to punctuate the track, they seemingly cling to an emotional touch that’s undeniably pop-centric. Really looking forward to diving deep into Found Camera when it drops on February 23rd.

Kindsight Share Tomorrow Video

Danish outfight Kindsight have happily been dropping brilliant pop songs for the last several years, and it looks as if they’re set to return with an absolute stunner of a new record. A few singles have trickled out with the lead up to No Shame No Fame, but nothing quite blows you away nearly as much as this ridiculously powerful pop number below. I’d even go so far as to say that this might top anything from the indiepop realm this year; I love how even when they spin about with these sparkling melodies that they’re doing it with a bit of bombast, sort of channeling the best pop rock of the 90s. Cinematic and yet intimate; look for No Shame No Fame on April 19th via Rama Lama Records.

Maria Chiara Argiro Announces Closer

I need to admit, I was initially drawn to this new track from Maria Chiara Argiro because of the striking contemporary dance performance; there was something both unsettling and intriguing, which led me deeper into Argiro’s track. It opens carefully, almost tip-toeing into the beat and piano lines; when Maria describes her new record as ‘a dream I’m sort of walking through,” you can almost feel that in the first minute. Then, the vocals began to crawl through the cracks, layered with little backing notes that out this otherworldly element matching up with the video portrayal. If you’re looking for something super cool, something you can sink into, then look for Closer; it drops on April 26th via Innovative Leisure.

Mammoth Penguins Return with New Single/Album

As an avowed Mammoth Penguins fan, I was over the moon finding this tune on the horizon for today. There’s something magical about Emma Kupa’s delivery, even when, she’s spelling out the lyrics as she does in the chorus on this note. Behind the vocals, the group consistently pump out no-frill pop rock, running through jangling-adjacent riffs and clever little interludes that allow them to set up the truest rock punch you’re going to encounter. I can totally picture myself in the crowd at an MP show, screaming along to every word Kupa tosses out; you won’t find more fun pop rock singalong tracks than what Mammoth Penguins offer. Happy to have them back after nearly five years since the excellent There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win.; they release Here on May 3rd via Fika Recordings.

Form Affinity Share Funny Little Man

I’m not entirely sure how one classifies Form Affinity; the project on my end feels a little bit like a more rock oriented version of Radio Dept. The track below builds with textured beats and a nice pulse; the vocals are spoken rather than sung, like snippets of a poem strung together in between the grooves. Pulsing and bouncing, I loved that the tune gets a bit of a heavy riff diving into the center, dropping a little bit of an edge into the layered brand of pop being offered through your speakers. Happy Tuesday kids.

Is/Ought Gap Announce SUA Compilation

Our good friends over at HHBTM Records sent us over this tip about a brand new compilation for Is/Ought Gap, one of the key acts in the early Athens scene of the 80s. This compilation pulls out rare recordings and releases that are likely impossible to find, unless you grab SUA. And, if you’re fresh to the band, well, you can hear remnants of other local acts like Pylon in their sound, particularly in some of the jittery vocals on this single below. But, I also like that it seems sort of like a distant relative to some of the sounds coming out of Minnesota at the same time. It’s always a joy when you get to dig into a band’s catalog from the past, so be sure to check in on this one; SUA drops on April 5th.

Brookside Mall Share Mailer Daemon

There’s a certain sound that I feel like Brookside Mall have hit upon with their latest single, which in turn has me looking towards the release of No More Fragrant Thoughts. Something lurking in the song recalls bits of brooding that you’d find in a Walkmen release, even going so far as tie in some gruff vocal trails that match up with Hamilton in a sense. Layered with strings and deep percussive tones, the song embraces this dark edge, seemingly impacted by the lyrical content and the steady march of the drums until the end. Their new LP is scheduled for a May release, so you can bet we’ll keep you posted as we draw near!

Babehoven Announce Water’s Here In You + Share Birdseye

Perhaps its the lingering Winter weather or just great songwriting, but I’ve definitely been indulging in some really mellow stuff lately…and this fresh Babehoven fits in there perfectly. The circuitous route of the strumming kept drawing me into the tune; it’s so light and careful, filled with an emotional draw when the strings sweep in for accent marks. Maya Bon hits these certain high notes too, pushing her voice to the max, only to pull it back as the verses require a more feathered texture. This single comes with the announcement that they’ll be dropping Water’s Here In You via Double Double Whammy on April 26th.
